[Proposal] Add skill duration timers on the abilities and display both bars at all times

I would like to propose that skills have their cool down time tracked directly on the abilities similar to how the ultimate number is tracked when that UI element is turned on. This would make it easier for players to see how their ability up-time works and provide a major QoL change for console players who do not have access to add-ons to track these. It would also be nice in general if we could see both bars at all times (this would require possibly re-arranging some of the UI to account for showing both bars at once including how to make it obvious which one is active) and in turn the issue where sets are temporarily incomplete on bar swap to be fixed so that Ebon and TBS are able to be used as weapons should someone choose to do so.

    Just a heads up...this isn't WOW where you can have 45 bars on your screen if you wanted. Its all about management and bar swapping. Where I think seeing both bars couldn't hurt per say it would then open it up to assigned keys to said extra bar and then no more swapping. Again, something I personally wouldn't mind due to HUGE lat issues but its just not the way the game is made.
    You don't go 4 wheelin in a sedan do you? (hope not...lol!!!)

    I can help with part of this. The active one, is the one you can see. :|

    Weapon sets don't break on bar swap anymore, unless you don't have the same set on the other bar (in which case, they should break - it's no longer 5 pcs)

    @Merlin13KAGL put Ebon on then bar swap and you can watch a groups health juggle. Unless it fixed with Wrathstone I am pretty sure its still an issue.

    @Joxer61 I am aware this isn't wow but there are also only 2 bars that are even possible. Its not like you will have to organize 8 bars across the screen. It would be nice to be able to see both bars if they add my requested change to get a skill counter so that you would know when to bar swap instead of trying to have a mental timer or using some sort of queue from a dot like poison injection.

    Yes, basically the Action Duration Reminder addon should be made into the base game.

    @IonicKai if you have full 5pc Ebon on when both bars are active, the buff remains. They corrected this numerous patches ago for things like Imperium, TFS, and Relequen, to name a few.

    You'll drop block while you swap, but the set bonus should remain unless you're running a different weapon set on the other bar.

    Update: As has been mentioned, 5 pc's that apply external buffs do break on bar swap for the remainder of the group.

    I think you lose 5 set piece bonus for a very short time. Tested it a few weeks ago.

    @Merlin13KAGL , no, I think they only fixed that for the person who wears Ebon, but for the rest of the group, the bug is still there, max health still flickers for other group members.

    There are no CDs on skills in this game to begin with. There is merely when DoTs will end.

    While I have not used what Zos added to the UI to track such information, I still use the addon I always used, it should let you track that information as long as it was design properly.

    Test it out. There may be some settings to play with but it should be of some help.

    Edit: with the reply just after this one it seems the tracker does do what I thought it might. As stated, if it was designed properly it would do what OP asked.

    Anyone remember how much of a joke the GF was at launched, and for a long time afterwards. It actually made the current design with the broken feature look golden, sadly. I said it looked like a high school intern's project that failed.

    This is something Action Duration Reminder Addon does. I fully support to implement it in the base game. I can't imagine playing without such a tool. Console players deverse some love!

    The buff/debuff timer is poorly designed imo. It's just a mess. Does it even show skills like Endless Hail or Blockade?

    Console players are second-class citizens according to ZoS. We really need some quality of life improvements and that damage over time timer would be a huge help for everyone.

    @IonicKai @Merlin13KAGL ebon is still broken, exactly like John_Falstaff said, i tested it yestereday. 6/3/19 to be exact, ebon is still bugged. i have wore it through weapons, stood near a teamate that was fiddling in a bank, bar swapped to see how his health got "damaged" by more than 1k. max health stayed the same if i am not mistaken, idk how it will work if the person didnt have full health, but if there is a mechanic that hurts dds for 15k, while with ebon they have 16, if you just bar swapped in that moment, they are dead.

    My hope is ZOS is working on buff timers for the base game i.e. "console players". Class rep Masel said they had mentioned it to them so at least they are a wear of the issue. Plus give us a mini map.

    Yes console need some of the add-on features in the game itself. I does need to be minimal in visual as I don't want my screen to turn into a ***. But please we need to have timers, this game design is about timer but we don't game features to support this game design. Something I find odd and really lacking to the experiences in the game.

    After seeing how this add on looks I agree! That is the exact functionality I am looking for to track skill duration. It was a bit of an oversight when I referred to the counter to be for cool downs as it isn't a cool down since you can cast the ability before the timer expires.

    BTW, at least on consoles when we do things like vas HM it's because we're good and have good teamwork, not because there's an add-on spoonfeeding us the mechancis before they happen B)

    @Merlin13KAGL Ebon must not be used on weapons. The "fix" that they did a number of patches ago affects the stats only for the wearer of the set. But for the rest of the group, they will still momentarily lose the Ebon health and will need to be rehealed back to full with each bar swap. This is not surprising, as making a special case to handle bar swaps is easy for the bar swapper, but for the bar swaps of an external source of the buff? I expect that's quite a bit more complicated.

    By "QOL for console players" do you mean for PvE guys who are doing static ST rotations to a trial boss?

    What do you want to track when you have the same dots on multiple targets? Which cooldown should it prioritise?

    It'd be better if the icons that appear for debuffs and buffs on the UI, appeared under a players nameplate (own effects) and you could see your timers ticking on each target (Edit: Without targetting) - But even then, it could get very messy.

    If they just added timers for the ground-based damage, that would probably be enough.

    @John_Falstaff @code65536 I've added to the original reply to reflect this, but thank you for the follow up regardless.

    I'm not sure if it would somehow see abuse (people figured out how to exploit cake, FFS) but if they changed the buff to persist, even for 1 second after swap it would alleviate the issue the group currently sees.

    This may lead to excess network traffic, with each swap, but it seems like they could correct this if they put their minds to it.

    So, TL;DR; 5 pc bonuses that buff anyone other than the wearer will get lost (albeit temporarily) during bar swaps.

    @BNOC I actually want this to help with dynamic rotations as right now on console you have to simply keep a timer in your head since there is no visual aid. I see your point about attacks that can apply to multiple targets such as poison injection but simply keeping track of the last one applied would work for me. In PVE you typically don't have have multiple targets up for long enough to matter and in PvP you have other things to do then pay attention to skill durations as there is a lot of dodging and many abilities are cleansed off by things like purge.

    There is a cool add on I saw someone using on pc that we should get on console. It adds the skill timer and if you swap bars the timed skill appears above the slot it would be on the first bar it looks fantastic

    The add-on for pc tracks your most recently de-buffed target (I think). So if I use rending slashes on 2 enemies, the duration over the skill slot is just showing the most recent time I used the ability. This is super useful, it can be annoying trying to track a dot on a target from the UI without using tab targeting.

    Edit: I wonder if it tracks the dot or the timer since the ability was used, important to note for situations like purging.

    Rearming trap has some issues though, the ability lasts 60 seconds when placed, so doesn't help with tracking the dot portion. Doesn't really matter seeing as the duration matches endless hail where it's used most often. Mag builds have channeled acceleration as an option.

    Technically there is the GCD, but nothing like in WOW. If you spam an instant cast skill though, for say, 46 seconds, it will only go off 46 times no matter how fast you are spamming it. Not that anyone wants to track that second's cooldown though...
