Hmm... I've always thought the opposite. Lvl 3 "former emperor" /grand overlord etc would be strange since that toon couldn't have stepped foot in a campaign yet. Keep titles character bound overall. If folks want their journal, that no one else sees, to show achievements across all toons by all means.

I'm not being facetious when I ask: why is this so important? I've personally never needed to see all the achievements in one place. They don't really count for anything, except titles of course, and I feel each of my toons has their own unique story, thus none need "all" the achievements. Genuinely curious as to the opposite mindset.

I don't really care about seeing the achievements on my alts but I hate that I can't progress the things I need to progress on my main, esp things that take awhile like some of the pvp things (ranks, etc. im not very good at pvp and dont play it alot so it takes me extra long) And so I have to choose and there's no point in doing BGs on my alts even though it might be funner to do it on a DPS char or a TANK char because the progress on my main doesn't carry over. That's really my only issue with achievements being per character is things like that. I feel like i never have the time to play my alts/progress them even if it's just getting their skills/skyshards.

I really think the approach that the "account is the player" not the character. I only have one main and the thought of doing all those achievements again on an alt totally puts me off making any alts. I would love to experience some of the other play styles but until I have totally finished my main I won't do that, partly through lack of time and partly due to it being a pretty boring grind. Anything ZoS can do to help the account wide unlocks would be supported by me.

I think, that achievements are should be account based, but titles should be character based. Though this system would be the most difficult to make.

If you don't care about achievments then surely you're not against account wide achievements since you have no opinion on the matter.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

I can say for certain that I , who have been playing for 4 years....

I think you have interpreted that wrong. I think that they are saying that many people don't even have all of the achievements on their main character. Why have them account wide, or for sale, when people don't even have all of them in the first place. Instead, just go play the game.

So now I'm even more confused...

Aren't we talking about achievements like "lvl 50 hero" or "fungal grotto vanquisher"? Filling up the progress bars in the journal, not progress bars for skill lines right?

The first, ok no harm no foul, add an "account achievement" tab in the journal that's a total sum of all the achievements of all your characters.

I will never be comfortable with skill lines being account wide. Just trying to clarify what we're discussing here...

I would actually find that useful. I have had reason to think that I did an achievement, but I don't recall which character did it, or maybe I am remembering wrong, or maybe there is a bug and I didn't get credit. It would be nice to be able to look at achievements and be able to see what characters have completed them.

Of course, I am on PC, and if ZOS does not do that, I can always find an add-on for that.

I don't have anywhere near all achievements even on my main character and one of the main reasons is because they're not account wide.

Some of them - particularly motifs or the Murkmire pre dailies requiring a mind-boggling 150 - can require an enormous amount of effort and or gold. For something which benefits only one character.

It's just too much effort and much easier to totally disregard achievements unless you know there's an associated tangible benefit, like with writs and crafting achievements.

This is where I get the point that I think that person was trying to make. It can be viewed as binary. Either you want them, or you don't. If you don't, then they don't need to be account wide. It is only when they are wanted that the conflict arises. People who do not yet have all of the achievements on one character... are they really interested in achievements? Only the few that interest them, maybe? Should achievement be account wide for that reason? Anyway, that is my interprestion of the statement.

My personal opinion is that if you want them, you go get them. If you want them 10 times, you go get them 10 times. That is the way the game is today. It is just the way it is. The game was not originally designed for 'free refills', and my reasoning is because this game play is built around character development, not player development.

Changing that, or even offering a cash bypass, is a huge change. It introduces player development that replaces the need to develop characters independently. Is that good for the game? A paid bypass is certainly good for Zenimax, and many players would appreciate it.

It will be interesting to see what they do.

Perhaps the answer with achievements is for us to lobby for a change in their name instead, it seems that some players don't really get what an "achievement" is supposed to be about.

Not under the present system thanks as that would go against the idea of all playing by the same rules, which is why some of us don't like the idea of people being able to buy skill points in the crown store. If, however, you want to lobby for everyone's champion points to be character-specific then I'll back you all the way!

I am pretty sure I said as much back in early 2015. I was also critical of the ability to use them for <50 characters.

This topic is difficult to leave a reply to because people are discussing so many things at the same time.

I like character specific achievements because they help me keep track of what I've done and where I am. Did I finish the Dark Brotherhood stuff? Did I run that dungeon? Plus, it's fun when I randomly get a "you killed this many of this" achievement on an alt. Achievements are just an accounting system that log what you did when you did it. If they became account-wide we would lose a large level of granularity of data about our individual characters.

I think achievements should remain character specific so you have a log of what you've done. I think REWARDS earned through the achievement system should be account-wide, and titles should be changed to work in this way. I understand a level 5 character obviously didn't earn the title "Emperor," but at the same time, it is obvious that someone is wearing the title on an alt. How dyes work is how everything should work with regards to that system.

If certain functionality becomes account-wide, the mechanics could just be slightly adjusted for alts. For example:
    • If "sky shards" became account-wide, what should actually happen is that additional characters should get the skill points, but they still have to go and collect sky shards to obtain the achievement. Maybe sky shards are enhanced so they have a chance to drop soul gems or something.
    • If Mage's guild reputation becomes account-wide, your character still must go out into the world to obtain the books to be able to read them and recall them later.

I don't understand why achievements are viewed as being synonymous with functionality or rewards. It seems like a lot of people are advocating for system-wide achievements when what they really want is account-wide functionality. Wouldn't it be better to advocate more for the latter?
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.

    No that's wrong.

If they were account wide I'd do them. With them being character only I skip many.

It's not at all a question of whether I want them. It's a question of whether they're worth the effort.

The amount of time / effort required for some achievements is BIG. ESO is supposedly a game and game's are meant to be fun. If I'm not enjoying myself then I'm wasting my time and money. A certain amount of "work" in a game is tolerable but there's a limit.

ESO's character only achievements exceed that limit.

Additionally, achievement systems rely heavily on a sense of completionism. Even if only some of its achievements require insane amounts of effort, once you decide that they're not worth the effort, you've also decided that completion isn't possible, ergo none of them are worth the effort.

    It's that easy to understand.
    Tandor wrote: »

Putting "achievement" in quotation marks is spot on there!

It's not really an achievement. Typically they're just doing some repetitive thing an arbitrary number of times or completing a dungeon - which isn't brain surgery.

If that makes you feel like you've "achieved" something, good for you. But seriously, no.
