I like the idea of them as in home decorations. But it's one MMO thing that never made sense to me - why is this pet following me around, oblivious to all the danger going on, never getting hurt, never being useful, etc. The whole concept seems a little dumb to me. Some folks love them obviously, but can't stand having one following me and hate seeing them in dungeon and trial runs.
Once upon a time, there weren't pets that really fit my characters. My first character never used a pet until it made sense for him to come across the scuttler on his travels doing Cadwell's Silver in the Pact regions. There are so many pets in this game now, though, that it's not hard to have one that fits each of my characters.
All that said, the number of pets in this game has gotten... a bit out of control. It makes me twitch inside as I'm loading into the more crowded cities and I hear a zoo as I wait for the game to finish loading.
I only use them on characters that aren't already dragging around a bear or a flappy. So my DK and NB can have a pet, but no one else. One of my DK is on the EU server and at prime time MDT, it's pretty empty while questing naturally.
I am a pretty serious player over 50 years of age and I take great pleasure in matching my characters' pets to their outfits, roles, mounts, and my current mood. I suspect that the people who think pets are for the immature look a lot older and wrinklier and crabbier than I do. Fun is the best youth elixir.
My favourites are the desert critters, because I'm a Redguard.

I'm 99% of the time in Cyrodill. And we all know people who play PVP can't have all the fun. First they eradicated the torchbugs and hunted the deer to extinction. Then they pounded our pets. Then they stole our momento's.

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."
Most my characters has their own pets - only one didn't find company yet.
I dismiss pets on stealth missions (except daedrat on one character), sometimes in dungeons, nearly always in trials (except wolf pup in WW run. Look and learn, my brave wolf!). Also pup in Shadowfen and some other dangerous places. I don't want crocodiles to eat him!
And I sometimes forget to call them back. But otherwise they are always with me.
Also I like to put pets in houses. Depends on character owning that place and idea. Mudcrabs are good as decoration, wolf pups are pets... I have four! All live in houses of my main character (Mournhold room, Strident Springs Demesne) or biggest ones (Erstwhile Sanctuary and Hunter's Glade. Last one is not yet decorated). Will have to find proper home for one I'll receive from login rewards this month...
Also have vvardvark, bear and guars in other houses. Maybe forgot something else.

Houses: Erstwhile Sanctuary as actual Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, Hunter's Glade as werewolf tavern (downstairs), Strident Springs Demesne as adventurer's house.
Wishlist: character slots, attunable stations (have 47/80 sets collected), molten war torte and white gold war torte recipes, Willowpond Haven, Kor and Hildegard houseguests, crown crates.
Yes I love them and I have loads. Just like the mounts. I do wish the could do something simple so you could interact with them. Like pet them and feet them. Play with them and maybe even hold a race with fellow players like they do in game with the lizards and frogs.
Maybe some of them can even give minor damage to an enemy. There are so many fun things they can do with the pets.
