OMG Does anyone else despise the Frostvault Skeeverton mechanic?
This is a mechanic that is vaguely comprehensible and doesn’t require a third party video to explain, both of which are good things. It’s a little irritating in that you can get into situations where your skeveton is not dead but is unreachable and can’t be helped. And, yes, it’s a bit funfair on rails, but the game has a number of situations and storylines where you become another character, machine or sprite, so it fits into the spirit of those situations.
If I wanted to nominate a crap mechanic that is incomprehensible and rubbish, I’d go for the King Naralmar fight in DoM. Is there anyone not involved in the development of that who has the faintest clue wtf is going on there? No one knows. All the solutions I’ve seen are variations on the ‘just nuke it’ theme.
A good mechanic should be clearly understandable (not necessarily immediately understandable and not necessarily simple). The challenge should be determining how to deal with it and executing that plan effectively, not trying to work out wtf is going on.
While I don't mind the skeevaton phase at all, its pretty sad that this is the line ZOA devs think the game needs to go to be challenging/interesting. They are so out of touch or under funded.
The fact that frostvault is almost a rehash of vHOF shows they really cant come up with anything new.
Of course it's a whole other discussion about one shot mechanics, 80%+ defiles.......yeah that stuff is all fun as well.
Not a huge fan myself. Mostly because I'm not sure what I'm looking for when I go in there. Most of the time I'm with people who do the things first, so I just kind of wander aimlessly for a few seconds.
