VMA; I did mage tower on my monk in legion; it took me longer to beat VMA when it first came out by days maybe weeks since back then we did not have the same power creep of today. Also legion was very different in that if you had X legendaries you could trivialize parts of the tower; or if you just had to insane Item Level. When VMA came out you could of had all gold gear solid sets and still struggled on the *** final crystal phase on the last arena; bad poison rng in 7th arena; idk I’d never want to relearn VMA. Although doing it today with 810 cp; it’s probably a breeze.

    Shields? What shields?

The reason magsorcs were considered easy when vMA first came out was because only they had a reliable shield.

The light armor shield only protected spell damage. Healing Ward required a resto and the shield is small if you are at full health... Fine as a reactive shield, but a poor preemptive shield.

Back then, wall of elements was such a bad skill that people got the vMA staff not for buffing blockade, but for the passive 189 spell damage. And the way CP worked, buffing magic and elemental damage separately, meant that magblades got stronger light attack weaves with a resto, and with the destro passives being pretty bad in those days, I and a number of other magblades actually ran vMA with resto frontbar since that yielded better DPS.

The next patch, Thieves Guild, was a major combat overhaul. Magic vs elemental damage in CP was no longer a thing, wall was buffed into relevance, light armor shields started to mitigate physical damage... That was when vMA started to get easier for magic builds. The original patch, though... That was painful.

Oh, and saving progress was not possible originally...

Stamblade here. It took me 3 hours to complete my first vMA. Granted, I had a full set of VO gear by then so it wasn't too hard. The hardest part is the last boss, which at first feels like its own mage tower challenge, just with 8 arenas and other bosses before it.

I did the mage tower in WoW on a few characters with varying amounts of gear. My arms warrior with good gear, for example, took about 30 minutes and was a breeze, while my resto druid with less gear (915, I remember it exactly) took maybe 2 and a half hours.

But the thing is, they're pretty different since in vMA you can die as much as you'd like and even leave the instance and you'll keep your progress. As to which one is harder, I wasn't a fan of the mage tower since it was about 10 minutes of flawless gameplay and execution, where as vMA demands that for 2 or 3 minutes at a time for over an hour. I liked vMA more than the mage tower as far as enjoy-ability, but it's hard to say which one is harder, for me.

That said, I have a friend who beat the mage tower several times more than me on many lesser-geared characters and he can't even beat normal MA. Either he sucks at this game's pve or his gear is trash. Either way, I find that detail funny, since nMA is a walk in the park.

VMA imo (at least the few times I've tried it, got torn to shreads in short order due to my reflexes not being the best to gtfo of the stuff appearing under my feet until it was too late). Mage tower wasn't too difficult, got all the skins I wanted within five tries across every class/spec in the game LOL.

Both were dumb, trial and error, gimmicky sorry excuses for game play in my opinion and I didn't enjoy either. I understand that some players seem to love dying over and over while trying to figure out some pattern or elusive mechanic. Why is something I don't understand.

    But to each their own.

I suppose I would answer your question in that both were frustrating and "hard" if you want to call that sort of game play hard. Neither really stands out to me as both relied on the same sort of design-style to supposedly challenge people.

I don't care for either. Repetitive and impossible until you figure out the trick to it, then it becomes repetitive and too easy.

yes, VMA like most pve in this game is bad design. A good design is easy to learn hard to master, pve is easy to master over time but damn hard to learn.

Honestly vMA is all about memorization. I know that's not something you wanna hear like there's some secret gimmick to winning with insane dps, but there's not. You can clear it with 20-25k dps if you memorize when to drop ultimates, what mobs to target first before anything else, which bosses health bars will cause adds to spawn if you try to burn them too fast, etc..

After the first few runs it really does become much much easier.
