Do any of you, honestly, think that if there was a 16 hour gap between US time and EU time (rather than around 7 hours, on average) they wouldn't still do the maintenance during the US night?
Even if that then meant that the EU was offline during the EU afternoon/evening?

Pretty much the case. My only guess is they want it all rolled out at the same time barring issues coming up. Outside of that it would make sense to stagger them.
One thought I had was it would also help with speed of delivering the updates to each server since doing two uploads at once would slow down delivery, but they probably already loaded the update to devices local to each server to avoid issues that could develop and speed up the process. I dont really get those ppl "you should go out more, get a job, read a book" honestly wtf? Your complaint is legitimate. This is EU server and all maintenance work should be done in EU convinient hours (aka deep night time). While it's tru You can do other stuff in that time it is irrelevent. You are a customer not some hobo trying to get a freebie. Look at Blizzard, they too have EU servers for their games and surprise surprise they can do maintenance stuff in our night time.

That was when there was also a seperate EU and NA server client...
Now they use the same client, which means a client update (for EU for instance) means both servers must be updated at the same time also, otherwise one of the servers has a different game version than the client...2 -

Well it might be easier for them too, so they can work together I think by means of skype or some other face to face between the teams, coordination in case they have to work together to fix a problem. That could be another reason as well. Having the teams communicate is a lot better then them not communicating with each other. Besides one team might be sleeping while the other is working and if there is a major problem they might have to wait for the other team members on the other side to come in. Simply they are not interested in that. I think they run their maths and it come out that the eu players are not worth the cost of extra manpower.
Same concept as game servers performance.
i would like to have the numbers of usa and EU players, just to have a confirmation about this huge differences between the 2 player base0 -

✭It's a major update and a DLC release, with a seven hour downtime window. They're starting it earlier than ever so that the dev and ops teams have the widest possible support windows to fix things that crop up on the same day.
For normal weekly maintenance, the effect of release timing on users matters. For major software updates (especially ones with significant DB work involved), the effects of timing on the support team matters.
If anybody thinks the initial window is the only downtime we're getting today, I've got a bridge to sell you.0 -

I think the point is that they run the US maintenance during the US night, but the EU maintenance during the EU day.
If it's so OK to run it during typical work hours, why don't they do the same in the US?
Because if they ran it during typical working hours in the US, it would be after-work (prime time) hours in EU and even more Europeans would be upset over this.
I think this is best compromise they can make- do it while US is sleeping and Europeans are working. Least amount of people will be affected.

So I bet u do realize thats a separate problem of them not having ideal server of their own. This megaserver is called EU therefor it should be adjusted for EU players that includes maintenance times. 1 -
