Combat Physician set

I've never used the Combat Physician set, and at some point trashed all the gear in it I was hoarding, but now I wonder whether that was a mistake.

The big mechanics question is: Does it only work on targets under 100%, or on everybody?

If the former (and this is the apparent consensus of how it's worked in the past, but I'm wondering whether it's ever changed), then it could be yet another automatic "heal" -- actually a shield -- ala' Mutagen or Earthgore.
If it procs on everybody, then it's worthless in a group, but might be interesting solo, much as Iceheart is.

(5 items) When you critically heal a friendly target, you grant them a damage shield that absorbs 8195 damage for 6 seconds. This effect can occur once every 6 seconds.

Which of the following can or can't crit?

Siphoning/Leeching Strikes?
Critical/Power Surge?
Lotus?
Vines/Trellis?

I know it doesn't work with puncturing sweeps or radiant glory. The heals from the critical damage ticks aren't counted as critical heals.

I tried a magNB with Iceheart, Combat Physician, and I think Julianos? Right after Iceheart came out. Personally, I found it to be kind of underwhelming---though the moments when you got a double shield proc where kind of hilarious.

I think trying it again with something more interesting than Juli as a third set might have potential.

I’ve always ran this on my Templar. It proc’s on anyone below 100% health that you heal (in your group or not). If you cast Regen, breath of life, etc on anyone other than your self who is not full health, they can get the shield. That being said, It can be great in solo pve content. I had the mages guild skill that gives major sorcery on my front bar (the morph that increased max health). I’d keep Regen up, and when I’d switch bars I’d lose health, get healed from Regen and get the shield. Great if your by yourself, not so reliable if you’re healing people around you.

It's a terrible set.

I was very excited for this set when it was first introduced in 2015. But when I tried it, it was nothing but disappointment.

The first problem, of course, is that it only works if you heal missing health. That eliminates the use of this shield as a means to preempt damage. Yes, it can react to damage, but half the reason to want a shield is to preempt damage, and you can't do that with this set.

The second problem, if you are in a group setting, is that only one shield can be active at any given time.

The only thing this set is good for is as a source of Ancestor Silk at the decon table.

The point of this thread is to reconsider whether that well-established analysis does indeed still hold true.
