@Starlock, the gates open if the nearest Keep has been captured by another alliance. There are a lot of guards at each open gate, but you can usually make it through with lots of heals and/or invisibility, or a group of people from your alliance.
Like everything else in Cyrodiil, it's a grind. You have to keep checking your campaigns at quiet times of day to see if someone has opened one or more gates that you need, then do a mad dash to try get there in time. It helps if you can go to a low-pop campaign too.
You can also wait until some brave soul goes through ahead of you and get by while the guards are busy with them.and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."1 -

✭No (But I'm Working On it)When I go to Cyrodiil, I PVP. Whatever my initial reason for going there, I always get too involved in the campaign and abandon whatever else I was trying to accomplish. I don't think any of my characters even have both skyshards in their own alliance. Most have the one near whichever scroll temple is part of the training quest for their faction.
There are also a couple of public dungeons that I haven't bothered with because I don't like the zone they are in.
Other than that, I think my crafter has the rest.0 -

I haven’t finished all the story quests in the DLCs but I’ve done all the public dungeons except one where you need to do a quest.
