I had this happen to three other games: Otherland, Divinity: Original Sin and, I think, Pillars of Eternity. I just hit the download button, and most of the "updates" took one second with no data downloaded. Nothing so far with ESO... Anyway, they seem to be fine if you just ok the download. Only Otherland downloaded a 55 Kb file.

I remember Steam did something like this a few years ago. Took a little bit to resolve-- I think I had to verify my installed games then-- but after that it was smooth sailing until now.
I have this problem now too (all my steam games inc ESO require updates) but I can't even verify the game files as the option is greyed out in steam.

    I don't know what do :(

My only option seems to be to download the 'update'?

I'd just download it. That's what I did with my other games. They're working fine.

Anyway, in general, Steam's been a smoother experience than the other online gaming services. I've had more issues with Origin and GOG. GOG is the worst-- slow download speeds, constant updates, and at random it decides to have you do those stupid picture RECAPTCHA things.

<-- can't pass a Turing test to save my life.

I just checked my steam Zenimax folder on my game drive and it says it is 22GB which doesn't seem right given what size a google search says it should be.

Hopefully after waiting 7 hours this 'update' will fix it but I wish I knew just what happened to cause this problem as it's certainly one I don't wish to experience a repeat of.

Wow, that sucks :( Sorry I couldn't help.

Still got ESO updating from 8.30am this morning...before the servers died...and people buried this thread...up to 45% now.

The two problems are unrelated but all in all it's been a really awful week for playing ESO.

It should finish updating around midnight...ugh.

Now I’m reinstalling from scratch from eso website.

How do you even do that ? I've tried to figure a way to do that for my wife's instal, which is through Steam, and we never found a download link or anything. She can't log in from my computer either if she uses her login and password, because I'm not using Steam. Looks like the systems are completely separate, and we can't just move from one to another easily. Which sucks big time...

I have this problem now too - several of my steam games inc ESO require updates - was able to verify local files on some but I can't verify the ESO game files as the option is greyed out in steam.

    I don't know what do :(

My only option seems to be to download the 'update' - which will take 7 hours :/

I've had 30 games that needed an update today on Steam. Most of which were 0 data ones, and one was a few megabytes. As I have a very fast connection, I didn't bother trying to figure what the heck was going on.

But my wife, who lives at a different place most of the time for professionnal reasons, had the issue with ESO, while being on a poor DSL connection. She's barred from playing ESO until at the very least tomorrow, thanks to that issue.

If there is ANY way to play ESO without Steam when you got it on Steam, even shady ways, I'm interested.

It's going to take me days to reinstall 77 GB. By happy coincidence, today was the last day of my current ESO+ subscription, so I cancelled the re-up. If I'm ever able to log in again, I'll consider resubbing.

Glad im not the only one this happened to last night.

Every game installed on steam required an update but it was instant. Except eso. So i tried to verify game files via steam but the option was greyed out. So then I launched the game directly from the steam connected launcher and the eso launcher shows "install" intead of play. Then i launched the direct bethesda launcher (not the eso64.exe) and THAT showed "play" intead of install which was strange to me. So finally i then launch it straight from the 64.exe no problem.

However, i had let steam run its update anyways. And when i tried to relaunch the game 30 mins later via the 64.exe, the exe was missing, as if the steam update was removing and rewriting all the key files. Shrug*

i was grandfathered into an old system. so on the billing history of the elder scrolls website i have a purchase code for the original game. people who signed up after a certain point in 2016 don't have that option, their game code is held hostage by steam.

There's something wrong on your ends guys. I've had a huge list that required updates when I launched Steam this morning. It took all of 30 seconds as nothing was actually downloaded. Little strange that all your files try to download / re-install games.

"Most of these updates are just shared redistributable updates and not real game updates. The end result should be that you need to download less content going forward.

This seems to happen at least once a year with Steam. Steam users with ESO+ login to find out they do not actually have ESO + applied.

    Other useful links;

    Will update more as I find them. This is the thing though;

For the ESO64.exe thing, quite a lot of people can't because of the swap of logging systems back in 2016. If you bought the game OUTSIDE of Steam and linked it and you're getting that error, I -think- you can ask to get the account unlinked. But if you bought the game through Steam, I'm pretty sure you can't, according to BillE. So to those people saying "drop Steam", when you've recently bought the game and have certain collectibles that are no longer easily accessed- That's neither a solution nor is it helpful.

Addendum: I would also like the note that the time that BillE said that it wasn't possible, that was back in 2018 (rather the thread I found). You could still try and contact support to try and do a more safer workaround, but until they remove the asinine Steam mandatory login those are pretty much the options I could find that had some reported success.

This is a steam related issue, so you should not expect any response here about it.

BS. Its ONLY with this game. Its a ZOS issue in correlation with Steam. I do expect a response and rightfully so. If you don't work for ZOS or Steam, then you can't help. I and others would appreciate if you would refrain from posting unless you have an official solution or are posting because you're having the same problem. If youre not, then you're simply "baiting". Stop.

Steam user. Was in Khenarthi's Roost opening a chest- game locked up. Couldn't re-log. Took the system down to hard boot. When logging back in, got the Steam update BS. I'm fortunate to have a good internet connection. Took about half an hour to go through all of the gyrations, but it's back up.
Haven't checked performance yet, but thought I would throw in another user's experience. I like Steam, but for this game it blows.

The beta-"fix" only reduces the download size for most people. Others are reporting that even though it's initially reduced, it still has to patch an additional 20 gigs or so.

The fix is for fixing the repeating downloads, (beta patch notes here). Unfortunately, that's all there is at this time that I've been seeing that's actually relevant. There were more cases of people having to do this multiple times with multiple games (including ESO). That's what it fixes.

I have the same problem I use hook64 to go around it.

    It's in this package:

    https://www.esoui.com/downloads/info1732-ESOGraphicsExtender.html

I would say steam and the ESO download are pretty screwed up. Download gets locked into a perpetual state then when I try to close steam with task manager it insist on staying open. I can't even move other game downloads to the top it is stuck on ESO download and might be wrecking my hard-drive :(

Ohh divines, I was just playing perfectly last night. When I turned my computer on and steam started, it started downloading 56gb. I was so shocked because I checked the forums that night as well and there were no notice for patches. I went to get food since it can't be helped, but when I returned the total download size has become 77gb. The actual folder itself says that it only has 13gb of actual size. Like seriously is Steam daft of what? I've played more than 8.7k hours in Steam and this is the first time something this annoying has happened. I decided to just delete the game and re-download it fresh.

Good luck with that, mate. My wife is currently in the process of downloading the whole game for the third time. We'll use the "beta fix" thingie and see what happens, but chances are good she needs to fully redownload the whole thing anyway. AGAIN.
