Why are there other people in my online game?!?

I never understood why people who have social anxiety or irrational privacy concerns play an MMO and then complain about having to engage in social interaction. Online games, especially MMOs (it's in their *** name), are designed to encourage social behaviour.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I don't agree with you, here.

Many people are absolutely fine - happy, even - with the idea of moderate, in-game interaction.

However, they were not prepared, or ready, for the far more personal concept of "get on Discord" and talk to, or be talked to by, a small group of people they've never met before.

I remember being shocked when I joined WvW as a noob random, in GW2 and we were all, immediately, ordered to get on TS.

To me, coming from WoW originally, that was something you only had to do if you wanted to "real raid".

Fortunately, you don't have to get on comms here, unless you're going to do the high end stuff.

Keep away from that and you can do everything without voice comms, which is how it should be.

my concerns about privacy are not irrational. and i am sure there is much you dont understand. though it is not my responsibility to explain it to you. perhaps in the future you could just learn to respect people's boundaries.

YOu make fun of what you dont understand. wifi signals can and do interfere with many people's ability to sleep. the pineal *** which produces melatonin to help you get to sleep has a direct pathway to both of your eyes and wont function properly when it is light out. you need sleep to detoxify the body and every hour before midnight is with 4 hours after midnight because of the body's natural rhythms and the production of melatonin. Darkness triggers this process. wifi signals can interfere with this process as the radio signals from wifi pass through much matter. But as per my wifi router's instructions from the help forum, i can help strengthen its wifi signal by using a paper towel roll covered in aluminum foil to help redirect the signal in a direction of my wifi devices. Hence, the tin foil hat you make fun of does actually have a real life application for some people who need it. I am not one of those people. Also fluoride in drinking water has a negative effect on the pineal *** as well and can interfere with sleep too. you're ignorance is astounding and i wonder if it's willful. Even so, i hope this helps you but your apparently lack of empathy for others seems to indicate this mild rant wont effect much.

you do not have the right to tell me how i should feel about anything. additionally yuo do not know enough about me to know how i feel about anything. furthermore you are in no position to dictate to me what my needs are or are not. finally your generalizations are extraordinarily bigoted.

Discord is about as secure as it gets outside of (the dark side of the internet). No worries, pick a screen name. That's all anyone will see unless in a drunken rage you post your full address

Nothing about the internet and IP are secured. Every time you download and use an app, you take the risk. I believe there have been a few complaints (though not rampant) already that Discord had been hacked and messed with. To what extend, I can't say. I guess it wasn't so detrimental cause Discord is still up and running and popular. However, that's when you have to be a bit cautious. There are just a lot of bad apples out there and can potentially hack/mess with something or site that have become popular and high vis.

I have to side a little bit with the OP (but not so paranoid-like, ha ha), and I don't care much either for Discord. Hence, I only join trade guilds. I rarely do trials anymore. I'm just not into trials. Sure, back in the days before text chat, I ran trials farming gears as anyone else and having voice comm made the difference; especially when talking about the trials with new folks. Same with vet dungeons. Ehh, to each their own. Sure, it's an MMO, but there are plenty of things to do and kill time with in ESO sololy other than trials. Trial gears aren't all that anyways.

For end game, you need to communicate with other people and build some sort of a relationship or a rapport with other folks. Some long time members in my guilds generally address other well known members by their real name and are friends with each other. Ofcourse, you don't have to do any of this. At the least you can just hop in and listen and react on chat

what are the privacy concerns with this feature? can the guild officers see your personal info,,, track your ip... how secure is it really? what is the point of requiring it but then telling people they dont have to use it. seems pointless to have it just to have it. I will never talk on discord, not ever. i dont like social media in general. even coming to these forums is more than i can bear up under some days... EEK!

I do not think the guild officers or other users can. However, I urge you to read their privacy agreement. Nothing is free, and if the product is FREE, then likely, YOU are the product. In this case, I think this is so. I prefer Teamspeak.

I use bnet for any voice. It works well.

Just join a different guild if it bothers you. Most don't require it. I use it, but it's rarely actually essential for anything, including endgame content, people just like to chatter and feel important. It's a game, so if something isn't fun for you, skip it.

Try doing vMOL, vHOF, vAS HM, vCR etc.., To me speaking on discord is a must if you are playing a support role such as a tank or healer. Our guild does not require DDs to speak and often encourages them to keep their mics muted if they are not leading, unless they are involved in an important game mechanic (running backyard, pinnacle factotum upstairs, shadow realm) etc..,

I've done all that both with and without discord. Sometimes it was useful, other times it was just noise. People should use it or not because they want to, and not be pressured one way or the other.

I also hate voice communitors for many reasons altough I know what kind of benefits they provide. I'm just too old for that and personally I think that for 95% of the content if there is a group of skilled players who know what to do then you don't even need discord. Recently I have been thinking to create non-discord PVE/PVP guild on EU for players above 160CP :))

For some stuff being able to talk to each other is necessary. I use Discord all the time and it's safe, though often my built in mic doesn't want to cooperate with it for some odd reason.

I never understood why people who claim to be engaged in social interaction are sat alone at their computers on Saturday evenings.

    Fortunately, we're all different.
