what are the privacy concerns with this feature? can the guild officers see your personal info,,, track your ip... how secure is it really? what is the point of requiring it but then telling people they dont have to use it. seems pointless to have it just to have it. I will never talk on discord, not ever. i dont like social media in general. even coming to these forums is more than i can bear up under some days... EEK!

For raiding you need to at least hear; no one can be typing instructions in raids people have their own jobs to do, etc.

Make a dummy email on gmail or something and use that just for discord. That’s it.

Or don’t join those guilds. Also an option.

You don't need to have any security concerns with Discord. They're not going to gain any of your personal information from this.

Normally they're used for better communication and building communities from guilds. The ability to organise events etc.

Most of the PVE Raid Guilds and PVP Guilds use either Discord or Teamspeak for Communication.

Its mostly for the reason to have an advantage to react to special Situation faster and be more efficient than typing while you are in fight with the enemy.

I for example use teamspeak since years and had no problems with it. Discord also seems very safe to me...but its up to yourself.

When u really want to be in a progress Guild I assume u have to use sooner or later such programms.

No one can see your personal information on Discord. You pick a screen name and then you can pick a nickname for each group you're in, if they know you buy a different name, and that's all other people can see.

It is weird for guilds to require you to have it and then not use it. If one of your guilds has told you that I'd follow it up with them and find out why they say it's required. Some guilds use it just for voice chat during trials and other things where typing takes too much time (PC doesn't have built in voice chat), some use it all the time because they prefer voice chat, or because it means you can keep in touch when you're not in the guild.

If you're really not happy using it at all ask about that when you join a guild and only join ones which don't use it. My guilds don't use Discord or any voice chat, unless you want to get into the regular trial group who have their own Teamspeak.

Where do you set your screen name?
I made account with an standard user name and would rather use character name to reduce confusion.

Well, Discord has become the „lingual franca” of the gaming community so it’s no big surprise that people are start using this tool. And even if Consoles have VC people start using Discord there as well as the in-game VC is rather buggy.

Right click your name in the member list (on the right) and click Edit Nickname (this will be your name only on said Discord server) or you can change your username in the User Settings under "My account" which will be displayed standard to all your discord friends and on all discord servers you are subscribed to (unless you have changed your nickname in said server).

We require discord to join the guild. Not only to have it but also to enter some voice channel and have a talk with some officer.
    Because
    1. Discord is a main part of guild activity. Someone may leave it after joining the guild, but most of applicants will stay. This way we are raising overall guild activity
    2. We are a busy guild, doing some high end content, mostly PvE, so if you dont have at least headphones to hear, than it means that you are never planing to participate in any activity, thus we just might not need you

And thats it, no conspiracy here

Don't do it, they are tracking you. They will listen to conversations even without the program being open, if you have a webcam they are probably watching you as well. You know who they are, be careful.

You just have to come to the point and understand that not all games are made just for you and how you want to play.

I don’t roll into TacoBell and demand that they add cheeseburgers to their menu to cater to me. If I want a cheeseburger, I go to a restaurant that serves what I want.

If you don’t want to use discord then find a guild that doesn’t require it.

F2P, B2P, etc. are valid, proven business models - but subscription is the one that fits ESO the best, given our commitment to freedom of gameplay, quality and long-term content delivery. Plus, players will appreciate not having to worry about being "monetized" in the middle of playing the game, which is definitely a problem that is cropping up more and more in online gaming these days. The fact that the word "monetized" exists points to the heart of the issue for us: We don't want the player to worry about which parts of the game to pay for - with our system, they get it all."

Its an MMORPG, skyrim/Oblivion/morrowind is a Singleplayer game.

Massive multiplayer online role playing game. There is no singleplayer in this definition. But you can actually enjoy overland content solo without the need for a Guild or anything.

Just don’t join a guild that requires the use of discord or any other social platform? Most of the game is ostensibly solo, though. Dungeons and trials are a small subset.

Discord does not share IP, so this is not problem. Some guilds does require discord which in some cases is silly in my opinion, but guilds can do whatever they want I guess. For example at one point I was in a guild that forbade people to ask for crafters in guild chat which was then only allowed in the discord... that annoyed me to the point of leaving the guild, so I did and that was that. Another cause can be voice talk over discord which I can understand because of how big a difference voice communication can do.

Our guild has a discord. We have used other apps in the past for posting messages and sharing info, but the voice chat function in discord is particularly good for when game chat in eso goes down. People know to switch to discord and carry on.

It has a good interface and is easy to use as well, in my opinion. I’ve got a couple other discord channels on mine as well now, besides guild channels.
  • victory.immortalb16_ESO
It's very useful for those that use it. For most games end game content, some form of voice comms is essential- it just makes everything much easier, especially explaining mechanics in boss fights or other situations.

I can't really use voice comms these days due to personal reasons, but back when I was doing top end pvp in another game years ago (and before said personal reasons existed) it was absolutely essential so i totally understand end game guilds requiring that you can at least listen.

If it's not your thing, then accept that you will most likely not be doing raids and trials any time soon!

what are the privacy concerns with this feature?

I'll defer to those who use it with regard to what your guild can see. The obvious privacy concern is that you are the product, not discord; they're farming all the data they can about you and selling it, just like all the other "free" internet services.

You need to decide for yourself if that's a price you're willing to pay for the obvious benefits it provides (personally I prefer to use jabber, TS and a forum).
Even on the internet, clear communication is important; it can be the difference between "helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" and "helping your uncle jack off a horse"; the difference between "knowing your s***" and "knowing you're s***".

Our guild requires Discord for certain group activities, but you only have to be listening for 99% of it. Some of our raid leaders prefer Team Speak, not sure why, so I have both.

However, you never have to use or sign up for Discord.

I do not think the guild officers or other users can. However, I urge you to read their privacy agreement. Nothing is free, and if the product is FREE, then likely, YOU are the product. In this case, I think this is so. I prefer Teamspeak.
