This thread triggers me for the simple fact that a bunch of nerds have taken an positive prefix, first making it an acronym because the actual definition of metagame is apparently too hard, then they made it a *** noun, and in the most egregious of circumstances, have pluralized it.

Didn't want to comment on the acronym, but it's quite ugly... Metalanguage now is the "Most efficient tactical advantage language" xD...

It remebers me WINE acronym (Wine is not an emulator) from Linux xD

If BIS does not depend heavily on your build then something is broken.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

Be the change you want to see in the world, @Joxer61 . Leave others to be the change they want to see in the world in turn.

There's another possibility you might consider here - something I've been mulling over myself as someone who dislikes this particular lingo as well. When I think about it "best in slot" really doesn't mean anything without context. Best in slot for what? What are your goals in this game? What do you game for? What do you enjoy? Does the concept apply to what you do at all? As someone who focuses on creativity and storytelling - role play as it were - my "best in slot" is governed by what best fits the character concept I'm going for. And the "most effective tactic available" is to stay true to that character as best I can given the limitations the game throws at me.

I'm thinking the next time someone chimes "because that's the meta" I'll respond with "meta for what?" I'm sitting over here exercising my creativity and designing colorful characters. Whatever meta you are talking about is not my meta.

Two people arguing over both side of a term with dual definitions is pretty amusing, but also pretty pointless.

Meta can mean having outsider information, it can also mean Most Efficient Tactic Available. In the end, when people use it, no matter what they feel the definition is, the resulting understanding of the context is the same.

I think the idea was to explain why something is efficient rather than just throwing "This is the meta". Because, while it's true that some items will get you the optimal results when it comes to dps, it does not really help people growing as players, and adapting, if the only arguments you use are "it's the best item".
It would be interesting to see people actually explain why sets are valuables (and the current best options) , because the whole thing encourages people to turn down any other alternative, and some players are making fun of perfectly functioning builds, because they don't even try to see how and why it was made.

And, the meta is a whole. My point is that what is best in slot is sometimes only best in slot if you only wears best in slot. Once you choose to deviate from the meta on something, what is considered BiS may not be anymore for your build.

There is a meta, there are BiS items/skills/race. But the go meta or don't play philosophy is quite prominent. So, it would indeed be nice to see people be more open-minded and less dead set on what's worth using or not.

Meta and BiS only account for dps and leaderboard scores, and this last point is actually relevant for maybe 1% of players. It does not account for fun. And I personally find that funny when I see people fully optimized, but they ask you to cast ele drain on their dummy, otherwise they can't sustain. The meta is only applicable in a fully optimized group setup, where your sustain is taken care of, your healing is taken care of, etc...

I had a guild leader blaming me for "misleading" new members, and opposing myself to his authority (He was a new player too, I was in the guild to help newbies, and he quickly promoted me to officer), because I expressed my reserves when he was sending brand new players to Alcast websites, and telling them that they were wasting their time if they were not actively farming for the items in these builds. Meanwhile, I was telling them the game basics, asking them how they wanted to play, and finding builds that would allow them to do that efficiently, but it wasn't the meta, and my leader apparently just wanted them to be trial ready (despite the guild being full of casuals and a couple of actual competent players). I was just worried it would turn these players away from the game, because it's a game, and the meta is irrelevant outside of a competitive environment.

The meta is not even adapted to most new players, because it only works with an optimal group, where everyone play their role.

Anyway, this post is way too long.

TL;DR: Meta and BiS are fine. But it's irrelevant for most players. It would be nice to actually encourage people to think, and explain how a build is done, rather than telling them to go meta, because what's optimal in trial may be useless in the groupfinder.

That is what dictates the categories of skill level/dedication. When I teach my friends who don't have the time to put in the effort to research everything, I teach them in Tiers. I find it harmful to the learning experience to jump straight to the Meta and discourage them from experimenting, or understanding why the stats/procs/skills in the Meta setup are as valuable as they are.

Casual - Doesn't really care about the meta and will play their way. Doesn't research ways to be a better player. Simply wants to enjoy their time in the game.Very rare to see these folks in Veteran content.

Novice - Wants to complete as much content as they are able. Will do a little research into what is the best gear to get there. Will dabble in things, but not really take the time to perfect things. Decent chance they will be seen in Veteran content.

Expert - Will complete all content. Does intense research into what the best gear is, why is it the best gear, and what is the best way to utilize it. Will likely be found in Veteran content pushing for score board runs.

The problem with this is that it causes the word to become useless (just like the word biannual became useless because of people using it in place of biennial).
What's the point of BiS if the word meta also means the same thing?
One last thing, if we're taking Urban Dictionary seriously now I guess I'm never having a chocolate eclair ever again. :(
