Redownloading ESO now because every other game I have sucks. Anyway, I just read the latest patch notes and it appears that jacking a bazillion points into magic (I had 50k+ on my old Templar) no longer creates ridiculous shields allowing me to wear paper in PVP. It also looks like shields can now also be crit. Am I understanding this correctly? Would this mean the PVP meta is now 90% tanks?

Anyway, if someone could just give me a lay of the land of what the game looks like in comparison to 6 months ago it would be appreciated.

Side Note: I’ll probably still wear paper like a lunatic. That’s just how I like to ESO. Best defense is a good offense! (in theory)

Why the implementation of shield is questionable. The changes are aren't that bad since it takes in resistances now. Personally haven't seen much fuss in game after things settled.

Murkmire tied shield strength to max health, gave shields more resistances, and made them crittable. Mag builds who have adapted are doing okay.

ZOS removed passive dodge chances from the game, and replaced it with AOE reduction, which hit Jabs rather hard. That's been discussed in the latest Class Rep notes, which you should also read. https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/449203/class-reps-update-meeting-notes-dec-7

Most sources of Major Expedition were nerfed.

Cyrodiil's map was updated, including several new outposts, collapsible bridges and milegates, and goat paths.

    Future changes: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/445615/combat-update-in-u21-a-new-approach
And the class rep thread have all we know.

Your resistance also comes into play before shields. % of tanks depends on who is replying. I wear light on my magicka builds.

Considering you do not seem pleased with the changes based on the perceived tone of the OP I would suggest deleting the game again since nothing has really changes much in PvP other than the shields.

Edit: as someone pointed out below the shield nerf mostly impacted PvE. The nerf in PvP is barely noticeable since they switched when battle spirit comes into play.

You missed the absolute temper tantrum that occurred from the Shield change, but after all was said and done nothing's different. Mag characters still shield stack and it still works.

This. I think people adapted well. I still am salty at the Healing Ward initial heal removal, though (as a non-Templar PvE healer).

The health cap is irrelevant in PvP unless you put a lot of CPs into Bastion. My Argonian magden has 24k health and 55k max magicka and my harness still doesn't hit the 40% cap. Invest some into impen and your shields will be fine in PvP.

It was a massive PvE nerf though.

Like the ithers have said, many magicka players adapted very quickly. Some found ways to bump their resistances via CP's and sets to make their shields much stronger overall with a decent crit resistance.

Just means people can't stack 7 divines light and survive forever. They have to think about crit resistance and such like the rest of us.

Depends on your server as to what you'll find in PvP. Some servers have quite a few tanks running in groups with healer support. Others have gone more burst oriented relying on their line of sight and such for survival. All in all, not tonnes of change.

As a Templar you'll find a few helpful buffs were given, depending how long you've been gone.

Unless you are a Mag Sorc using hardened ward, in which case things have definitively gotten a lot worse ...

Love how people say 'Those that adapt'..

Well yeh, I adapted yah. I no longer use shields in my builds. And guess what? I still kill scrubs in PvP, I still get whispers that shields are OP and I still hear Sorc is OP.

But the point every sorc pointed too was that even before the shield nerf, shields would never last its full duration against any semi competent player. So sorc was already looked down upon in the combetative pvp community before nerfmire. And it did not get any better after the change.

Shields on sorcs are still pretty good but a bit more squishy than they were on other classes as they only have the one. also the heal from healing ward has been removed..
Yea the meta is now pretty much all tanks and snipers.

I play a mDK and PvP mostly. I rely on harness pretty heavily for survival and I haven’t really noticed much difference really.

I’m Cyrodiil, if I’m going to die, very likely I would have died with the previous shield anyway.

Shields feel weaker in any content. I have stacked lots of resistances and crit resistance and they get cut through like paper.
Based on my calculations, shields should feel stronger in pvp against low penetration builds. This is not the case though.

They are quite potent on my pve tank build though with maxed resistances and 40k+ health.

Shields indeed took a nerf, however after the initial outrage everyone who stuck with their builds eventually learned to adapt (as an endgame PvE MagSorc im a but squishier but ive changed around my build a bit without sacrificing my general play-style or damage and everything is fine for Vet Trials and DLC Dungeons).

I haven't noticed an increase in tanks.

The same strategies that always dominate PvP are still there - namely the zerg cc/stun + burst = instant death.

No. But the most prominent, Annulment and Conjured Ward, do.

Maybe shields should provide a percentage boost to physical/spell resist now that they take them into account. I mean, hell, the reason a mage casts shields is because they are wearing cloth armor. It's pretty dumb for the mage to cast shields that are as strong as the armor he needs the shields to replace.

    Well nobody like this change,

It was truly an unnecessary nerf bomb, change could be balanced if shield nerf limited to critical damage and no shield stacking!

ZOS turned some skills purely into dust, I stopped using Damage Shields in PVE or PVP.

MY Sorc no longer using any shield and yes its dying now more often!

So I got to PVP a bit last night. I left my build as is from June and did reasonably well. I got into 3 1 on 1s and went 0-1-2 with the loss being to a 810 CP (I’m 759) after a few minute YouTube worthy battle. The other 2 had me surviving an onslaught from stealth by repeatedly casting shield-shield-heal repeat until they were out of resources and ran.

Once done with that I did some good old fashioned Zerg surfing and killed 20 NBs in like 10 minutes.

I did feel a bit wet noodlish in the 1 on 1s but my toon is specced to take out multiple people better than 1 so that’s not unexpected.

All in all ... seems good to me!

Well, with minor adjustments, the build I use for example all I did was swap from Ilambris to Maw of the Infernal as well as redid Champion Points.

Its a little bit less DPS, however its not a big enough difference to hinder Vet Trials or Vet DLC Dungeons with HM, I still spec all attribute points into Magicka and have almost exactly the same setup, Maw just helps boost health (thus shields) a little bit more.

Yeah...well...I adapted (again). But I grew tired of that and now I am on an extended break because I was so weary of the unneeded changes that just cripple certain builds in the name of so called combat balance. Had been a faitful ESO plus member from launch who often defended the changes but I switched to another game and have not played since early November. Funny I thought I'd miss it more.

Likely I'll return one day but the forum comments on Cyrodil are not encouraging. And while I like the thought of a Necromancer class...I see some are already expecting or wanting it to be the most powerful class. (Balance?)

Yup it still works just no longer OP where sorcs can shield for days and days and they actually die once in a while without needing 12 people pounding on them for 5 minutes
