Is Cyrodiil always that empty? Where is everyone?

I heard a lot of complaints on forums about bad state of PvP, not enough players participating, etc.

Yesterday I decided to visit Cyrodiil and actually go deep though the map and do some quests. I picked the fist campaign I saw - 7 days one. As a beginner I decided to pick up scouting daily quest and resource capturing.

I captured a couple mines, farms and then realized that.... I haven't seen a single player during all this time. Where is everyone?

I checked the map and noticed that my beloved AD was fighting for one of the keeps. I travelled there so to find out that they we're fighting 4 stealthed nightblades, who eventually wiped the group.

That's it. No more PvP encounters at all. None came to beat my ass when I was capturing resources.

My questions are:
1. Is this a "normal" condition of the Cyrodiil or I chose the wrong day to go there (Christmas)
2. Does the campaign type(duration) affect the instance or the instance is one for all campaigns? If there are different instances, which one is more populated?
3. Do most people run nightblades in PvP these times?
4. Is the only way to get some action is to join a group and go fight some nightblades???

You went into Shor (or Kyne?). Those campaigns are pretty much always dead unless it is prime time. Try Vivec (Sotha, on some severs) next time if you want to see more action.

It's a combination of things that create the situation you found yourself in.

Yes, cyrodiil population is consistently lower now than at any time since launch. There are several reasons for that. And pop is usually lower on major holidays, so that was a factor too.

On every eso platform, there is only one continuously populated campaign, Vivec. The non cp and the 7 day campaigns have some die-hard supporters, but very few of them. Those servers are primarily used for emperor flipping and pve players there to farm AP. They are heaven for Nightblades because emp flippers and pve'ers are ripe for ganking.

A combination of Christmas and the fact that you picked the worst campaign to enter (in terms of finding people to PvP against). Shor is really just an AP grind, whereas Vivec is usually focused on actual PvP rather than trying to farm AP.

TY, Shor or Kyne are the ones I want then LOL. I suck at PvP and my main will have to go in there eventually to get the skyshards and the rare fish. That's all I'm interested in and I'd rather not be harassed constantly.

On the screen where you pick your campaign, to the right of each campaign name there are some indicators. The first two tell you how many friends and guildmates have assigned themselves to that campaign. The last three show the current population for each faction in that campaign. The pop indicator is is tiers, 1 bar, 2bars, 3 bars, and a lock symbol. A campaign with one bar in each category will have only a handful of players on each faction.

Pick the campaign with higher bars for more action. (Hint, It will always be the 30-day CP campaign) Happy PvP'ing.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

It's pretty normal in my experience. At least as it relates to Sotha Sil. Every now and then they'll be some action. But more often than not it's pretty empty (and for good reason if you ask me).

I am surprised a few buddies running around in one of their gank groups didn't show up to kill you at your resource though. That's pretty standard behavior.

Well, it is Christmas, so i spent playing board-games with my family instead of playing computergames. I do have time to check the forums now as my kids do the dishes.

Also since the last patch, Cyrodill is to laggy for me so i rather play other multiplayer games like Battlefront/field. I hope they fix it soon(tm).

Open world PvP has never been in a worse state as far as population than it is right now. Yes, Christmas was a factor but Cryoland has been recently a wasteland most of the day. BGs are fairly populated, wait times typically are not too terrible but Cryoland is seldom pop locked except for maybe an hour or two a day at best. So while PvP in ESO is far from dead, open world pvp is on life support. We could discuss the reasons behind the state of open world pvp but very few would argue that its ship has sailed.

    Yes it's that empty

Not enough people want PVP as an end game mechanic.
They should have stuck with just the arena system for PVP.

Actually there's quite a few people that still prefer pvp for end game. The problem is Zos has ignored the performance issues for far too long and has gotten to the point where the lag and performance is so bad it becomes unplayable even at 1-2 bars population.

It's bad enough for experienced well geared players, but for new players it must be the worst experience so it's at the point now where they can't get new players and old ones are just fed up and leaving in droves.

It's unfortunate because pvp has some of the best diversity in combat and builds mixed with taking and defending keeps makes for some exciting gameplay, but nothing we can do can make Zos care about their game or their customers.

He’s right. I know at least 10 people that I PvP’d with regularly who outright left the game over the last year. And an even larger who are now fairweather players that will log on to be disappointed.

What’s worse is, despite the beliefs of others, is that the game is actually the most balanced it’s been since before CWC... in my opinion. That’s an awesome thing. All they need to do now is tweak some things and improve the lag. And we are home...

But I think there were 2 major events that really hurt PvP this year:
    1. The Sloadocalpyse, when they dragged their feet on implementing a fix for the set. That made a lot of my friends uninstall.
    2. And the perceived lack of care with fixing lag in Cyrodiil. Though I think it’s slightly improved, its ever so incremental, and with new flagrant issues (stuck in combat bug)... it’s hard for us to notice improvement.

@StormChaser3000 pvp is the only reason I play. I think it has the best of every world. I think they really achieved something, minus the ability to support open world on the scale they and we desired. That and maintaining or increasing the pvp base.

    2. Does the campaign type(duration) affect the instance or the instance is one for all campaigns? If there are different instances, which one is more populated?
    3. Do most people run nightblades in PvP these times?
    4. Is the only way to get some action is to join a group and go fight some nightblades???

It's Christmas ... Most people are off the Gabe fur the holidays

Christmas my friend. Many where caught up with eggnog, carolling ( I tried) , voulnteering, family, friends, and good spirit.

This has nothing to do with christmas. The 30 day cp campaign is a laggy campaign at prime, on PC EU even the 30 day no cp campaign is becoming laggy.

7-day campaigns are dead content

That didn’t stop a Christmas blue zerg in my campaign.

Oh well, most are out of region laggers so probably wasn’t Christmas for them.

Well, at least the remained time in dead campaign can be used for advancing towards Master Angler title.
Nightblades, you didn't hear that! xD

    And then Vivec awaits.

While the population seemed to have declined shortly after Murkmire's release, right now is hardly the to judge population as it is down in every game due to the holidays.
