The game is global, so someone's going to be in primetime no matter when they do it. I doubt there's a good solution here

Game may be global but there are North American servers that should not be going down in the middle of the day...

Why not they taking the eu down.

If you are talking about the maintenance happening right not, it is 7:30am where I am, hardly prime time. It's always prime time somewhere, but it's also always dead time somewhere else. So maintenance at any time is inconvenient to someone.
Server maintance takes place on EU server -and in most of EU there is prime time RIGHT NOW
There is a diffrence between "some" and "most"
  • Killsnakeb14_ESO
The post was about EURO servers maintenance at EURO prime time.. does not matter what time zone you are in.. all that matters is the euro server should not have EURO server updates on EURO prime time. (EURO prime time being around 4pm to 11pm GMT/CET

EDIT: Just to clarify I understand and want updates.. just not in prime time euro on the euro servers or prime time US on US servers.. you choose to play on euro server from other time zones you should follow euro times to.

Game has only really been officially released for a few days...they're still new to this methinx.

Guess they are new to all previous MMO's released as well which had the same problems.. i mean really if i need to bring a MMO out now, how hard will it be for me to know when is prime time for EU and US and when not to shut it down.. it's not rocket sience.

The main issue I have with this, is that I cannot seem to find the announcement on the forum for planned maintenance now.

    Was it actually announced?

I'm now just hoping the 'several hours' is a huge overestimation and we don't lose a whole evening's play.

Seriously, you take down servers just after people get home from work ready to play? What kind of customer support is this? Do it while people are at work, for *** sake, not when prime time is about to start.

It is very poor having this downtime at peak times for Europeans; and no reason for it other than ZOS can't be bothered to pay technicians outside of US normal office hours. Also, yet again, a message in german and one in french but nothing in English. I have no major complaints about the game or launch itself, but I don't think I've seen worse customer service for a non-EA game for a while.

Aside from the timing which IMO is extremely poor planning, the other thing that worries me is the statement that they are pushing a "small" patch and expect the down time to last several hours. This being the case how long is the server going to be down when they decide to push a "big" patch? Days, Weeks?

As far as the downtime timing goes, this is simply poor planning. To paraphrase a well known military axiom, Prior Planning Prevents *** Poor Player Relations!

As I understood it the EU server is already located in the EU. Otherwise the megaserver test results regarding the EU server are questionable to say the least.

It was, there is a post in the server status section of the forums. Was only 20 minutes or so before the start of the actual maintenance start though, which I personally consider to be on too short a notice.

(here's the link to the english announcement for all those who are looking for it: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/71556/eso-maintenance-4-7 )

Maintenance on a Saturday or Sunday for any gaming service is flat out ***. A lot of gamers only get to play on weekends.

Cam back from work wanted to relax playing TEScO ( :P ). Log in, play, yay, "server is going dow", what?!, rage, sadness, regret, sitting now drinking and thinking about meaning of life, nothing is sure, everything is the known unknown.

Yeah... its a day off for me after a hard week at work, I sit down for litilarly 5 mins and then I get booted off and told I can't play for another 'several hours'

I was doing odd jobs this morning to prevent me wasting time then as usually maint and stuff would be at those times instead of 'prime' time?

Yup agree totally, home from work, cup of tea and whisper bar by keyboard, log in and 5 mins later comes the announcement that servers going down for maintenance for several hours. So there goes any play today as I start early for work.
All in favour of hotfixes and patching content - even do it daily if needed till game is sorted, but pick your times Zenimax. 7am BST- 11am BST would be perfect on anyday I reckon - of course, that would mean the maint. team working overnight in US - Oh wait, many of us do night shifts .....so sort it!

They have so much important bugs to fixes that your maintenance time concerns are so small. You should realize around you there is players losing characters, bank items and slots and they should fix this ASAP. Maintenance times will be better over the time, the EU server is not even physically in europe yet..

just to add also my opion, the timing on this manteinance (ordinary with no notice) are totally wrong for EU, please fix this timing as soon as possible.
I hope there will not be consequences (in terms of players) if you keep doing that.

As long as we protest in a polite way, I think it's right to let Zenimax know that these maintenances are badly-time scheduled, but remember we are one week from early access launch, so I really believe that this is not going to be the standard policy.

I'm sure after a few weeks there will be no need of frecuent patches :)

yes but 30 minutes notice, is just not good enough

Primetime is the time when most people are concurrently online in a region.
Primetime is NOT 'when I want to play'

For Europe that means from GMT (currently BST) for the westernmost and GMT+2 for the easternmost, with the bulk within the GMT+1 zone.

I seem to remember usage graphs peaking between 7 and 10pm. Earlier and workers are just getting home or having dinner, later and people start heading to bed. That period is when most schedules overlap to produce the highest population. TESO will have their own metrics on populations anyway.

Now is not EU primetime. It may be inconvenient to you and me, but by doing it this way round at least it should be up by primetime (fingers crossed) so better for more people

Just some info here... In the U.S. Primetime means 7p.m. to 11p.m.

Not in the afternoon. Maybe (especially since they took eu first) they have to do the patch to fix stuff and they are being kind and doing EU first so it will be done before primetime.

Get over yourselves. These people work in the U.S. Sometimes routine server restarts type of maint can be done by the people working overnight shifts, which is what time it is when EU is in the a.m., here in the U.S. it's 3a.m. when you want them to do the tasks.. but that's not what's going to happen for unscheduled patching maint.

The number one rule of online gaming is now and has always been, Never play on Patch Day.

I'm sorry that I have to post this, since actually I deeply appreciate the game and enjoy it to the extent of having taken vacation for it.
In that case they should extend the maintenance to few days and fix all the needed things...

It's hours, not days... really... Whining because of hours?
    Please don't make people quit
They are fixing things... really that makes people quit?

Agreed that this isn't the most strategic moment to roll a maintenance for European servers.
