If you would start a tank today, would you choose Warden or Dragonknight?

Please if you got time explain why?

I got a warden main (DPS) that pulls good numbers, but I've always liked tanking, played one in ffxiv in all the hardest content and im now thinking of changing since it's so few tanks in this game. But I want the best start.

I know what you are thinking "If you want the best why the he'll did you roll a warden for dps". Well I've always had a feeling that they would fix warden and now stamden is in a good place even tho it has taken way longer than I had anticipated, before that I did the best with what I was given holding on to the hope still pulling enough numbers for hardest content.

But playing a warden for so long now makes me want to min-max from the beginning since we wardens have lived in the shadows for so long (in pve) just looking at the history on leaderboards and the lack of wardens brings me an unpleasant feeling.

So now I don't want a 2nd, 3rd or 4th place choice master of nothing character. If Wardens and Dragonknights are equals I'm fine with that but no more 2nd place.

I only choose between Warden and Dragonknight because of utility that fits tanking.

Help appreciated 🙂

Actually just recently leveled DK tank to 50. Choice was based on the amount of defensive class skills.

Warden seems more fun to play as a dps.

They both perform well and offer a decent amount of group utility. Just so happens though that dk is a little easier (for most) to play. As an intro, this is a great class with one downside: it'll make you think all tanks need to be like the dk. They do not.

I created a Warden recently for 2 reasons.

1: My DK is already a StamDPS, and I didn't want to spend the time respeccing him, and leveling up new skills.
2: I like the support style for non-DPS characters, so I feel Warden fits that role better than a DK.

Technically the ceiling is pretty close. There are very competent warden tanks out there. At the high end of tanking it is more about your personal experience than your class. DK has lower floor though, it's better for new tanks. And they are still 1st in the realm of public opinion.

I have tanks in all four classes but the warden is the one I get on with least. Must be just me, but it doesn't feel as robust as a DK, nor as dynamic as an NB. Seems to be neither fish nor foul.

Play both completed dlc vet trials with both in both main and off tank. Start out as a DK. It is the best to learn on. Widely accepted and really no disadvantages against the warden tank. Also if you main tank you will dk tank for engulfing.
Warden tanks is fun and different and has a totally different outlook on tanking but it's new no one knows it can tank as good. It's add pull is dealayed and aimed. And sustain is much more passive on a warden.( harder) They do offer toughness and 10% extra sustain and major resolve/Ward and life steal and an extra synergy and a AOE bol that hits for 15k on my tank and...... You get the picture.

The only real true measure that they are held to is only one buff.

Dk are meta because of engulfing. Without that wardens would be better in every way

This, only because a warden tank can provide minor toughness after Zos placed that buff behind the paywall recently.

I do like tanking on both, slightly prefer my DK but probably because I have used it the longest.

The only reason I have for choosing DK myself is that I hate the class Warden.

I'll never play one myself, and to me (again IMO) it marks the turning point of a game I used to love, marking the start of its decadence...

Sorry for the non-objective opinion, but you asked us to explain why we're choosing what we chose

EDIT: Still, I won't deny that Wardens make for extremely good tanks, that go head to head with DKs at that... still, not my option and not my style.

They ruined the warden in many different ways but for tanking it was the useless change to Arctic Blast (it was a health based skill that did aoe damage and could chill mobs). Just use the Polar Wind morph now on your tank.

Dk tanks are ye olde classic standby and I find tanking as a dk boring. I had a Nb tank for the longest and most content but they gutted him so now I chose warden. Pre Murkmire all I had to do on my Warden max health tank was slot the bear, wear medium armor and carry a bow to solo quest with him. He was completely set up as a tank as far as cps, attributes, skills etc, just needed to armor swap to heavy for tanking. Now, I have to change his whole set up from the bottom up if I want to solo quest between tanking jobs. I’m not pleased at all. So I stopped tanking with him and respecced from the bottom to the top just to do mediocre stam dps with him in overworld.

Meanwhile I made a stam dk during the witches fest and he’s like a hot knife through butter. So:

Pre Murkmire: Warden trials tank who can do overland without aggravation, just need an armor swap

Post Murkmire: cookie cutter Warden stam dps who is aggravated with overland, also has to spend thousands just to jump in to tank for friends. Good at pvp though, Like that even matters to me -_-

How about tanking races (pending the racial balance pass we just heard was coming)?

Argonian seems to be consensus BiS for tanking on any class, because of the tri-stat sustain passive. Who comes after that, and how close are they to each other?

I don't currently tank, but the potentials I have kicking around are:
    -- DKs: Redguard, Imperial, Dunmer
-- Wardens: Argonian, Imperial, Altmer (yeah, right)

Imperials would be the next go to after argonians

Also Dks are better. Thier sustain is rediculous. When you pop your ult you can get a ton of resources back. There is not a better tanking ultimate then corrosive armor imo. You become completely unkillable while it’s active. You can provide shields for your team. You have the chains. It has so much going for it tanking wise.

Ahh, man.. DK was my tank of tanks, but not anymore. The Igneous Shield before this nerf with Murkmire (and multiple nerfs prior) was one of the big reason DK was so good as a tank. That was shielding the group good, but not so much now. At least with Warden, the Healing Thicket and occasional Budding Seeds make the other (actual) healer's job much easier. I even like using my Templar as a tank. Pop out Retribution and BoL here and there and this also make the healer's job very easy. Plus, you can use the Power of the Light while tanking as well. Also, good ultimate heal from the Templar.

Nahh.. not DK anymore for me. Even converting my stamsorc into a tank is fun. Hurricane up for more resist and supplemental damages. Plus I drop liquid L for the others and the Hardened Ward is a lot better (for self, of course) and a bit better now than the DK's Igneous. Even dropping down the Storm Atronach gives the with Major Berzerk for someone to activate as well as putting out good AoE damages.

PvP? Warden. They have the best mitigation, better healing, better dmg whilst tanky, best sustain, better group support, better mobility and are all around better.

PvE? DK, despite warden being a stat and utility powerhouse, DK has the unique buff off engulfing. And between that, and the ease of igneous+GDB and chains over the other options. It comes out slightly better.

although I voted, play what you like. Both work. DK is a bit easier. I've always enjoyed the DK playstyle and skills, I have 5 of them atm with various builds. So I'm biased.

BUT...both can complete any content out there. DK seems to be a good selection for you mostly because it's different. trying something different is always good. However, don't level it for min/max reasons, especially if you are a one toon player...they will nerf and buff classes till the end of time. DK may be tops now, but that could easily change on the next DLC/expansion.

Just made a Nord Warden for my first tank and loving it in both open world and dungeons. Just hit Level 47 after completing SCP and had no tanking issues at all in any dungeon, so in my opinion it's still really good.

It's probably an advantage for me that I haven't played one before, so I've just used what I believe is best and unlocked so far. Vs those who are use to the old skills and how they handled.

Nb: I use SnB on front and 2H on back with utilities. Bear/permafrost as ults.

So it does everything I've expected, has been a lot fun.

Nb: Also gonna start an ice warden tank using staves once the CP jump occurs so it'll be interesting to see how they compare.

I still think in the coming months that engulfing will be changed. Following that, I believe we will see wardens become more favoured in the meta by a slight margin.

That being said, atm, DK is in top spot. And whatever the future holds, the least likely to wake up tomorrow being the odd tank out is still the DK. So since you said that is your main interest, choose DK.
