If you would start a tank today, would you choose Warden or Dragonknight?

I got a warden main (DPS) that pulls good numbers, but I've always liked tanking, played one in ffxiv in all the hardest content and im now thinking of changing since it's so few tanks in this game. But I want the best start.

I know what you are thinking "If you want the best why the he'll did you roll a warden for dps". Well I've always had a feeling that they would fix warden and now stamden is in a good place even tho it has taken way longer than I had anticipated, before that I did the best with what I was given holding on to the hope still pulling enough numbers for hardest content.

But playing a warden for so long now makes me want to min-max from the beginning since we wardens have lived in the shadows for so long (in pve) just looking at the history on leaderboards and the lack of wardens brings me an unpleasant feeling.

So now I don't want a 2nd, 3rd or 4th place choice master of nothing character. If Wardens and Dragonknights are equals I'm fine with that but no more 2nd place.

I only choose between Warden and Dragonknight because of utility that fits tanking.

    Help appreciated 🙂

My main is a DK Tank and i've been tanking since i started playing this game. I've tanked pretty much everything (endgame content). Since my Tank is my main and i wanna have all achievments on her, i decided to PvP with her to get the 5 stars^^ I made a Warden Tank, as replace in trials and dungeons. And i have to say that the warden is not a bad tank at all, but the DK is just simply better. The healing on warden is a bit harder and for example in dragging stuff together it's slightly slower (the portals from the Warden are great when you know where stuff spawns, since you can just place it and in the second the stuff spawns it stands already next to you, But chaining is faster, since the portals have a little casttime. I had to learn to cancel those proper, otherwise it takes a bit.) . I've tanked BRP on both of them and my group had at this time no real healer. I had more issues on the Warden then i had on the DK (i needed 2 selfheals on the warden and on the DK i only used cinder storm as HoT, that was enough). If you ask me today i would defenatly tell you to choose the DK as a Tank.

I have both a DK and Warden tank, and they're both absolutely wicked. That said, my Warden tank is just more fun to play. It's a personal thing that will differ from one person to the next and shouldn't be decided based on polls. Do what works for you.

i absoloutly agree on that, it also depends on your playstyle and what you are focused on in the game.

There are no bears or flowers when tanking as a Warden.

Leeching vines is the heal when you are expecting to take a lot of damage (tanking). Lotus is the heal when you are expecting to do a lot of damage/hits (dps). No flowers when Wardens tank.

Never use the bear when tanking.

Just go here people. Warden Tank is equal to Dk tank. It’s just lack of knowledge that is keeping Dk preferred.

It was a joke about the Warden class in general.

Well.... I would (and should have) chosen warden period - for everything (well, pet sorc too). Because with my lag (2000 ms + on a GOOD day), the pets help mitigate the fact that attacks don't hit, heals don't go off, I can't bar swap....

Besides, I LOVE pet classes. Always have. Miss my Hunters from WoW.... What I should have is a mix of 15 girls, around half in each warden and pet sorc. WAY too late now - too much gold into riding training etc.

No. No, they're not. Well, okay, DPS magdens are. But otherwise, no, and they haven't been for a long time now. A lot of people are still thinking of them as they were when Morrowind has just released.

I played warden and dragonknight tanks. Liked warden better. Just for no reason whatsoever, I turned a Nord vamp PVP stamblade into a PVE tank. And oh my, it's so awesome. I love nightblade tanks no.

Such a smooth, fast and self sustaining tank. For trials it's an off tank (never tried main, but will), but I run vet DLC dungeons with it too. I'm wearing either Imperium/Plague Doctor/Lord Warden or Imperium/Alkosh/Lord Warden.
I go S&B/Frost Staff, and use Jewels of Misrule, and have an amazing recovery - the possibility to switch between magicka/stamina cost for blocking is just too good to be true. Chugging trash pots between bosses is perfect to always have Warhorn ready as well when needed.
I realize how well it sustains, when I ran *normal* Scalecaller the other day with activity finder, as a warden healer. Suddenly the tank dies (fully leveled, and wearing Ebon and all), and angrily calls out like "Will the f*****g healer send me some shards?" I'm like "Oh, sorry. No shards, but orbs?". I did it on veteran earlier that day on my tank, and had absolutely zero sustain problems myself, despite zero shards or orbs, so I didn't even think about it. ;-)

Self healing is a bit weak, but otherwise it's all good. As for warden/dragonknight, I'd say warden. Wardens also have a really good sustain. I didn't get it to work on DK if I didn't use Equilibrium, and that felt a little risky when you needed it the most.

    Warden
i despise the DK tank and always have. it is just too boring to play.
    just poke and hold block.
in my experience, they arent even strong.
DK is “meta” just for l33ts (or players who think they are l33ts) because engulfing flames helps push higher numbers for score runs, which do not matter in any way to the game.
people just worry wayyyyyyyy too much about what everyone else is doing, using, wearing, and how they are playing.

wardens are much more fun to play and offer more group utility (shrooms, trees, ice fortress, minor toughness).
IMO they are the best and strongest tanks in the game. period.

however...my main character is a tank and she is a nord templar. 2 and a half years tanking with her and no issues.
my DK is my healer. also no issues in any content.

trust me, i get hated on A LOT.
but everyone changes their tune very quickly.
i love proving people wrong and showing them the ways of anti-meta.

people are quick to hate on players that arent using best in slot anything.
“tanks must be DKs. must be argonian. must wear ebon and alkosh.”
“healers must be templars. must be argonian. must use olorimes and jorvulds.”

meta chasing alcast sheep literally infect this community and make it a cesspool of toxicity.
(nothing against alcast. he is a very knowledgable and respectable player. its his worshippers that need to dial it down several notches.)

ANHYTHING IS VIABLE you just have to be creative and think.
    it wont hurt.
well, for most players it might. they are too busy chasing flavor of the month meta nonsense.
this is a GAME. not a JOB.
people just lose the focus on having FUN.

Sorctank :D Its more funnier, than the "BiS" tankclasses. I am loving DK and Sorc - the complete classes. I am also playing an DK Tank in a Raidgroup. Its a good class for tanking, Sorc is more difficult.

Sorc Tanks can be so much fun to play. I run an ulti spammer Sorc tank and when we're doing quick farming runs it's generally my tank of choice.

I'd play a DK tank for the ice, ice, baby.

Warden tanking was extremely fun. Finally it was nice to have a viable tank build that wasn't a DK. Plus the abilities were actually fun and exiting to use.

Then Nerfmire happened. The best, but very underused warden tanking skill was nerfed.

Here's what it used to be:

    A3KSTW6.png
Note that the damage listed scales off high health. It didn't hit nearly that hard unless you had 50k health or more. Warden high health tanking was really fun.

Here is what it is now.
    jCnipqg.png

    Brutal and unnecessary nerf.

Just search the forums for "arctic blast nerf" and you will see a small community of people that realized how good this was.

    NQ7I8yr.png

A few people might wonder why this skill was so good for tanking. It tended to aggro everything around you. Tank just had to pop this and dive first into all the mobs, and you could do decent damage to trash packs with it too. Probably the most fun I have ever had tanking in this game.

    Nerfmire needs to be reverted.
