Enough, is already time to let Steam players use the normal client

Is not hard, people say if you buy a key from the game you can active and use the client, so we know is possible. So why ZoS don't do it?? For how long Steam players will suffer with those problems?

Eh, I bought the game through Steam to start with because that's how someone I knew said it needed to be done. Well.... that was - um - ineffective at best because with satellite and steam on top.... ugh.

So I put in a ticket to ZOS support. They were VERY helpful. By then I'd bought the "normal" version of the game on sale. Support helped me sort out how to open the correct ports etc. so I could log in through the regular client, bypassing steam entirely.

I - have zero use for steam. I will never mess with them again - if a game I think I'd like to play requires steam.... well, too bad. I just won't play it. steam can DIAF.

Zos will let you if you buy a new license. However, it is very likely that there is something in the agreement with Steam that forbids Zos allowing players that chose to link to Steam to abandon or even bypass steam.

This seems very likely since there was a time players who did not buy from Steam, but linked to Steam, could log in directly. This loophole has been closed.

I really so no reason why anyone would by this game from steam anyhow. It makes no sense to put a third party into the mix when it is not necessary.

I am having difficulty logging into the game and the two time I have succeeded I have gotten the Unable to connect to Server message.

I came here to see if anyone else is having problems and see that Steam Players apparently are. I sympathise but I am not a Steam player and I think ZoS might have broader issues.

I don't think it is ZOS preventing people from using the regular launcher, it is the contract with Steam that is preventing it.

Just so you know, it isnt steam that is the problem. ZOS is just horrible at coding. I have been using steam for a decade and have dozens of games on it including about a half dozen MMOs and i have never had an issue with any game through steam...until i started playing this one. And to this day, this is the only game i have issues with on steam.

ZOS just needs to quit slopping through everything. Every DLC is worse than the last when it comes to bugs.

This game works just fine for me. The issues I have are strictly related to satellite for connection.

I bought the game through Steam and I have no problems launching the game without Steam even open. Is this because I bought the game in 2015 before they implemented whatever changes they did in late-2016?

I bought the game on steam and play through the client myself, you can do that without a problem. Just start the game from the folder.

    Yes, that's correct.

It's not possible if you bought ESO through Steam and after november 2016, since you don't have a ZOS account name and password, so you can't log in through the ZOS launcher.

Yes, Steam is evil, they will lock in your account perpetually to them. They do this for other MMORPGs as well (I.e.FF14).
Never, ever, buy an MMORPG through Steam.

    So much misinformation here....

There is no ‘steam version’ of the game and when you launch the game from the steam client it is only briefly involved during an additional layer of authentication between ZOS server and Valve. There is no ‘steam overhead’ as steam is in no way involved when you are playing the game. The version of the game sitting in your steamapps folder is the standard game .

ZOS keeps on breaking the code on its own servers when it patches the game and this is what causes the additional layer of authentication with the Valve servers to fail. People who say this is a steam problem are just plain wrong.

If you want to get away from this recurring issue then buy a copy of the base game from eso store and use the native Bethesda launcher which is already sitting in a folder in your game folder under your steamapps folder.

Luckily I bought it via Steam at the end of 2015, so I never ever fire Steam to play ESO. It still bothers me the files are in the steamapp folder... I wish I could just ditch that, without re-buying the whole game again.

Pretty sure you can download the game from account page and install it somewhere else if you have an old account.

Well I can vouch for the fact that after buying the game from the eso store you can move the game folder anywhere you like. Maybe you can already move the game out of the steamapps folder since you are using the native launcher to update rather than the steam client.

Your user name in the game is your account name, it is required to have one to play on any version. Also ZOS servers require a password from all versions. so incorrect again.

People who bought the game in, IIRC, 2017 or later cannot launch the game through alternative means: they are screwed and cannot login until these issues are resolved.

I realise there are legal issues with Steam preventing ESO from allowing us to circumvent Steam login (those of us who purchased through Steam). But surely there is *something* feasible that can be done?

You have an account name and a password, yes. But they just don't work in the launcher without steam. (And I did try that) So it's kind of correct.

The issue isnt on Steam end its on the user end. You will always have a problem using satellite to play MMOs. Latency is important and even on a good day satellites are horrible for latency.

I avoid Steam for all MMOs.

Every single MMO I have played does not merge or allow Steam and official logons.

For example, MapleStory 2 just launched, and players are having the exact same problems there with support saying it's impossible.

I bought the game in November of 2016 through Steam and there were always Two Launchers in the folder on my Mac. One Launcher opened the game through Steam and the other Launcher did Nothing except give an 'Invalid' message.

Steam sucked from day 1. Every time Steam updated Their Client, I couldn't play for a couple days. Not when ZOS updated the game, only when Steam updated Their Client. This got tiring fast!

After 8 months of Steam problems, I saw the base game on sale for $10 through ZOS Official Store so I bought a copy. After buying this copy it made that Second Launcher in my steam/apps/eso folder work. That Launcher Never worked before then. Now I can play without running Steam first and having the Log-In Error. The only time I have to load Steam is to Update my ESO Game Client, but that doesn't require a Log-In to ESO and getting the stupid Error people still get.

I'll never buy a game through Steam again and glad I don't have to play through it now!

Well let's see, Steam compared to U-play: Steam wins. Steam compared to Microsoft (failed "Live for Windows"): Steam wins. Actually, Steam stacks up pretty good. It's just ESO on Steam that's the problem (I don't go though Steam for ESO). Therefore I have to assume that it is in fact ZOS implementation that's the problem!
