....while falling down after sliding on a banana skin left by one of the princes...... the whole slow-motion-max-payne-like fall.... and then zoom in onto the banana skin. screen goes to black just to return moments later where the prince of darkness takes up the banana with a feel of upcoming doom. the screen finally fades to black with a white text 'finally - the most powerful item in Tamriel'..... THE END....

There is no finale in MMO. As a developer, you either keep the updates coming or risk losing players that results in shutdown.
yes, note that most MMO who shuts down tend to have an world ending effect
However this tend to be far simpler like enemies spawning everywhere.
Not any new content, if the game ends its because its not enough income to keep servers running, they stopped making new content long ago as its expensive unlike keeping servers running.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

I would end it Lady Olenna Style.

I imagine, I would have it all planned out, I would be at the Gardner House In Waywrest.
Making an Essence of Ravage Health.
put on my favorite armor and weapons. Adorn my Stormlord Helmet
Mount my Noble Steed, Titan, and ride to Daggerfall overlook. As we ride all the Dark Anchors go off at once.
I get to my castle and fix my final resting place. get all my trophies together.
drink it the potion. Slowly walk over to the great hall of Daggerfall Overlook
Sit on my Breton throne, and fade out like a boss.

Why is this Murkmire Patch so freaking morbid. Like all of a sudden the game we all know and Love is just going to be crap.

We don’t even have it yet on console and got me so worried it’s just gonna ruin everything.

It’s like having to put the family pet down hugging her and telling her everything gonna be alright as you inject some freaky pink liquid death into her paw.

    It won't matter.

Because Dominus Ghaul will arrive with the Red Legion and destroy the Tower, taking over the Last City and all our stuff that we'd just spend years earning, taking away our power, and giving us a sequel that sucks so bad that ----

    --- oh, sorry; wrong game.

What if all the bad deadra mad at the Vestige for foiling there plans ban together to defeat him we see how they came together once to turn Jyggalag in Sheogorath so i suspect the same thing so the forces of Mehrunes Dagon, Mephala, Molag Bal, Namira, Nocturnal, Vaermina, Boethiah, Sheogorath and Clavicus Vile team up and curse the Vestige and then Hermaeus Mora steals all on information on the Vestiges heroic deeds so they won't be known in the future effectivly erasing him and his deeds from history.

    @Ilsabet WHERE'S AT'AVAR!?

    LOOK...OVER THERE! IT'S MEREEL!

OP, that wouldn't make sense for me since I play an Argonian in ESO, a Dunmer in both Arena/Daggerfall, a Dunmer in Morrowind, Imperial in Oblivion and finally an Argonian in Skyrim. So, they're all unrelated and different people.

I'd end it with the hero just retiring due to age, giving the sword to the next rising hero and serving as a mentor to that new hero. Old people are bad***, just look at Caius Cosades.

Welcome, Moon-and-Star, to this place where destiny is made.

I play healers or DPS often for vet dungeons and trials (NA, CP810+). I play mostly elves or Argonians.
I primarily play Damage-Based stuff in PvP, but occasionally I'll play something tanky or got the heals.
I also love gaining more knowledge both metaphysical and mundane regarding TES lore.

I also occasionally role-play, but I prefer playing the game.

The game fades into darkness, then a moment later, ... light. You appear to be in an office, when a goddess tells you that you have an option to start again in a new life. But you get to take only one thing with you into the new world. What do you choose....

I haven't completely thought it through but for sure my character's story doesn't end with ESO. In all TES games (minus Daggerfall and Arena) I always played a Bosmer called Elriah and ESO actually delivered an answer for me of how that is possible.
Since I tend to write too much I should better put this in a spoiler.
The Vestige is a Soul Shriven. Soul Shriven cannot die. When they do, they will reform sooner or later. They are made out of the essence of Couldharbour and therefore linked to that realm. A bit like the lesser Daedra. Theis bodies are instable, dooming the Soul Shriven to watch their own decay for an eternity. Absorbing Skyshards will delay that process but not stop it. Elriah manages to reclaim her soul but that does not change her nature.

After the events of Summerset Elriah joins the Psijic Order. Tired of adventuring she enjoyes the peaceful atmosphere of Artaeum where she can finally leave the troubles of Tamriel behind. But before she can start to become a Psijic she first has to find a way to free a friend (no name, no spoilers) but also herself from Meridia. Meridia has imprisoned her friend in the Colored Rooms and trapped Elriah in time. While time moves forward for her it seems to stand still around her: People always speak the same phrases over and over again when speaking to her, destroyed cities are not rebuild, insteat every time she stops by they are still hammering the same nail. Even on Artaeum she is trapped while Meridia prepares a massive plot in which the Vestige is meant to play a vital role.

Since she cannot ask the Psijics for help in her situation and doesn't stand a chance to crack that problem all by herself she just travels around Tamriel, visiting all kinds of places she never visited before. At the same time her Soul Shriven nature starts to trouble her as small patches of her skin begin to shrivel and turn a pale white, wich is probably quite painful. Then eventually Meridia unfolds her plot. Which will be the final Chapter.

Once she played the hero one last time Elriah can finally move on to Arteaum. She becomes an apprentice of Sotha Sil who finds a way to stop her decay. The dacades she spends travelling between Artaeum and the Clockwork City will be the best years of her life. And then Dagoth Ur returns. Of course though, Elriah doesn't know what's going on. But over the years she notices Sotha Sil's contidion to change slowly. He doesn't share much about the troubles that plague him but when the Psijics scry dark images of the future of Vardenfell Elriah decides that something has to be done. She returns to Tamriel hoping to find some sort of weapon and gets the idea that the Amulet of Kings might be a way to start. She travels to Cyrodiil to do as much research on it as possible so that she could replicate the way it transformed souls into some sort of divine energy. But the Imperials don't trust her scientific interest and suspect that she was actually planning to steal the amulet. They throw her into prison and don't even bother about a trial. She stays locked away for several hundred years since she can't die.

As the situation in Morrowind gets worse the reigning Emperor stumbles across a certain prophecy... an orphan and outcast, a youth born on a certain day to uncertain parents. Well, Elriah is no youth but her body didn't age since she became the Vestige and she looks young enough. Also no one knows her date of birth but since there are no official documents about her such papers are even more easily forged. Before she knows it Elriah gets shipped to Seyda Neen. Her powers are mostly gone after so many years of not using them and the Psijic Order has most likely forgotten her. She wants nothing more than to go home but there was no way back. Besides, Dagoth Ur is still out there.

And the events on Morrowind happen.
Elriah tries everything to avoid becoming the Nerevarine. Destroying the Tribunal is the last thing she wants to do. But in the end she realises she cannot alway change things for the better and slowly begins to accept the prophecy.
When she leaves Mornhold at the end of Morrowind Elriah is shocked and just done with the world. She will never get her old life back and completely lost any motivation to move on.

I still need to think of how Elriah will become the hero of Oblivion and Skyrim (but it will happen!)
    Moving forward.

After the events of Skyrim Elriah will live some calm years in her Lakewiev manor, sharing it with many different people, a family of outcasts. She will feel much better then and decide to join the College of Winterhold. During their research on the Eye of Magnus she will eventually find a new connection to the Psijic Order. Quaranir will not know her but she wil ask him to spread word on Arteaum. And who knows, maybe Loremaster Celarus is still out there. Maybe he will remember.

As to my characters final fate: Elriah is immortal. She will watch good friends die as the world changes and time goes on. Again and again. That is her fate. Knowing that she will outlive every single person she will ever talk to. Some might stay longer than others but their end will always come while she will remain.

Just made me think a good way to end an epic MMO that lasted decades is to give an optional quest in the final days of the server that starts off a challenging fight. Give it a bit of an adaptive AI and mechanics that keep you alive for a while at any skill level. But is guaranteed to slowly get harder and kill you at any skill level. And then you can’t respawn. gg

MMOs closing down is quite a rare event, but it happens.

The best MMO ends are the ones where the community is all there before the lights shut down forever.

Here is me witnessing the last day of the great Warhammer Online. We were all there when the last server has been shut down.

    Greetings, ladies and gentlemen.

Let's say that, a few years from now, it's time to wrap up ESO. My question is, how would you do it? How would you end it all?

Here's a scenario that I've been chewing on a bit:

In this final chapter, your hero or heroine becomes entangled in one final Daedric plot, one that involves multiple major Princes — except this time, they're wise(r) to your ways and finally unleash their full power against you.

You battle their forces to a final confrontation with these Princes. It's a seemingly hopeless fight in the end ... your hero(ine) falls in the ensuing battle, but not before putting a stop to the latest Daedric plan, whose failure guarantees they'll be prevented from interfering in Tamriel's future for centuries to come.

As you lay dying, your life in Tamriel flashes before your eyes. Your accomplishments. Your failures. Your victories. Your defeats. All of it ... and then some. The last thing you see in this life is a flash of bright white light, followed by darkness and fleeting visions of what's to come ...

    ... Arena ...

    ... Daggerfall ...

    ... Morrowind ...

    ... Oblivion ...

    ... Skyrim ...

... and you realize in that last instant of comprehension that you're going to return, again and again, each time playing a crucial role in Tamriel's history. A hero/heroine reborn when the world needs a hero/heroine.

You smile. You'll be back. You'll always be back ...

I skip through the dialogue always choosing the first answer available.

I reckon it will end with all the players standing around Daggerfall fountain with torches out saying stuff like "you cant take me" or "the end is nigh" whilst people are duelling around you and my screen looks like strobe lights in a nightclub.

    this is the true reality
