EQ2 has done this for years. Heck, their version of the crown store is mostly player made content at this point.
So saying MMOs can't do this is just plain wrong. The key is to set proper rules for file size, number of polygons, texture size etc.
Personally I don't like this idea because player made content rarely looks cohesive with the rest of the game, lacking as it does the guidance of an art department or any kind of oversight really.

Yeah, that's the reason I didn't get into the Skyrim mod stuff, even a lot of the so called lore friendly stuff stuck out like a sore thumb.

Thomas the tank engine mount.
Looking how stuffs are being sold in crown store at a ridiculous price with minimal effort such as re-skins and lazy house designs, it's disappointing that there is no community made crown items because it will be far more detailed under passionate hands.

I find that their art department has continued to grown in skill and depth.
Given a chance to make your own models in exchange for crown royalties? I know it's an MMO but other games do this like warframe, dota2, etc.

I don't mean to brag but look at how detailed mods are in previous TES games plus we got to create our own stuff with our absolute interest and passion not just what is offered at the table.
