Okay I raised in another post that I found it weird how the event is given to every player who logs in who has the Summerset chapter, they don't have to even do the event, and even tho players who don't contribute and even weirder it includes a period of 7 days after the so called event finishes so have no way of actually contributing to it. So basically they're giving everyone who purchased it an opportunity to get it even if they don't contribute to it's actual completion of the event.

    So why is this?

Now the cynic/marketing side of me has just realised that they can now sell the Summerset chapter after the event finishes and include in it

    The Pony
    The Horse
    The Psijic villa

and no one can argue over it! We've all been given the option to get them at no cost, and it's us who are determining whether we get there or not. As such this opens the door to them offering the extras as free give away's, basically usable as an incentive to those who want to purchase the chapter in the future.

This would explain the time frames of including the extra week and is an extremely clever way of manipulating what would have been an extremely angry mob by those who already had the chapter. Basically forcing existing players who already have it to buy another upgrade pack if we don't get to 100% whilst new players get it for free.

I hope this isn't the case but I've seen enough companies do this to not rule it out here.

And I think its fine. Just look back to early access pack, just after beta. -> The so-called beta-monkey was given away with this pack, even to those that did not participate in the beta at all.

    Did that hurt anyone?

    No.

edit: I fail to see how taking part in a community event entitles anyone to think they are better/have achieved more/deserve ... anything.

As I recall, the early access pack had the Scuttler, not the Monkey.

    https://elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/861

    ;)

    early access pack -> monkey
    explorers pack -> scuttler
Q: I participated in the ESO beta. Do I get anything special for my participation?

A: Yes, you get a monkey vanity pet to call your own. Check your in-game mail on 4.4.14 for a message containing the little simian.

It's the only place, "monkey," appears on that page.

Yeah, the monkey and the striped senche tiger ZOS has been very good about so far.

As an owner of the monkey, I can tell you what the drama was about, there were a bunch of tiers of beta where they slowly added more participants as it went along. They told those of us that got in early that we were gonna get the monkey and some people took that as you had to get in on that tier or sooner to get it. In the end it was given to everyone who was in the beta even if they only came in on the last tier which was basically an open beta. Some entitled people cried all over the forums because of it.

That's how I remember it too. The monkey pet was announced just before the end of the last invite-only beta. I was one of those who got into the first basically public beta (you still had to apply and get an email saying you were invited, but they were inviting almost everyone who applied) and I read the announcement as everyone who got into every beta would get the monkey, but I can see why some people would have interpreted it differently.

The event is designed and intended as a promotion to sell more copies of Summerset. That is why people can log in for days after the achievement is finished and still get the awards. It gives more time to sell more copies of Summerset.

    Pretty simple.

I think there's a gap in logic here; the availability of the house is predicated on the community hitting 100%. If we don't get to 100%, no one gets the house - including new players who buy the upgrade. Why would you assume new players would get the house and not people who already have the upgrade?

I'm just mentioning the house because atm we're not at 100% yet, but the pet/horse goals have already been reached, so those are moot points.

I'm just saying, given the way the event is set up, there isn't a path in the flowchart where people with the upgrade now don't get the house while new players who buy the upgrade after the event do.

I don't understand what you mean by them forcing existing players to buy another upgrade pack. You can't buy Summerset again - it won't let you apply a 2nd code for something you already have.

I'm sure, if we succeed, they'll advertise it during the last week as 'buy Summetset now and get these free extras', just like they did with the Morrowind Nix-ox. The only difference was that didn't require anything from existing players, you just had to own the expansion by the deadline to qualify.

I really don't understand all the paranoia and conspiracy theories around this. It's an extremely simply marketing technique with obvious benefits for ZOS (artificially raising player activity and an extra incentive for people to buy Summetset during the sale). I don't understand why there has to be some kind of sinister secret plot to trick us when there's a very clear, obvious benefit already.

Because the internet is full of wacky conspiracy theorists, and ZOS seem to attract more than their fair share of them  !
In fairness as rational as I normally am, I looked at that bar with a little cynicism. ZOS marketing knows how to market things, and sadly they've quite often done so at our expense. Sadly now everything that's nice I still am looking for the catch.

I don't doubt that they set the target at what they considered to be an achievable level, there would have been no point in running the event otherwise, so it'll hardly be the stuff of conspiracy theories if it turns out that we hit it. I fully expected the progress to escalate substantially over the weekend, it is after all prime playing time so anything else would have been odd to say the least.

The conspiracy theorists may well feel that there was never any real target and false notional figures are being put up every day until we miraculously hit the target on the final day, but (a) there's no evidence of that and (b) there are no losers by it even if it's true. They get their marketing success, and we get the free rewards that so many players have strived for - and we know that's the case not from the daily figures but from the number of players we've all seen in Summerset (yes, we've been there too!) during the last few days.

I'm the first to acknowledge that I'll revisit "the catch" if it all goes pear-shaped between now and Friday, with a major Crown Store push for the house we didn't get, but my hunch is that we'll hit their target, the event will have been an innovative and successful marketing exercise, and everyone will be delighted to have got the rewards. Sure, there'll be a few curmudgeonly souls that still won't have bought Summerset and yet feel they should have joined in on the free house but hey, that's life!

That's not what they will do. Far simpler to call the event a 100% success then market it in the post-event window to mop up those people who were sitting on the sidelines. The event will be a success otherwise it's the same as saying, "oh, don't buy Summerset now, clearly not enough people playing the content to finish the event, best off leaving this one out of your collection", and no marketing team would do that.

The event will be a resounding success (no matter what) and Summerset will be heavily marketed in the post event period.

While I'm not mad about whatever conspiracy is being uncovered/invented here, I do think that the only reason the Villa is free is because it is far too large to furnish it within the ESO+ limit. ZOS may have feared the outrage of both not releasing it and selling the flawed product. Since it's free now, they can use it to push their sales and calm the community as it's free and you shouldn't complain about free stuff.

They will not be including these bonuses in the packs unless we reach 100%. After the grace period ends, people who have the dlc will get what ever we have unlocked together as a group, but anyone who buys it after such time period will be out of luck.

This is a community event where its not about who does what, its about togetherness and sharing even if you dont have the DLC right now. ZOS and the ESO community are not selfish like in other MMO RPGs. We are happy to contribute to a task that rewards everyone, even if everyone does not partake.

Why do you care that others get things you get.. honestly is it a bad thing they get a pony a horse and a house?

I really don't get the entitlement that floods games these days, i blame this exclusive crap infesting gaming everywhere, who cares if a million customers has what i own, good for them.

I think the more likely thing this is all for is to drive up hype for the House. If we all hit the goal quite a lot of people will get the house but many more will not and those players may very well open their wallets when the house finally appears on the store (The Imperial War Horse is a shrunk down version of this). If we dont hit the goal, they can claim they gave us the chance to earn it for free and eventually release it in the store. Many of the people that wanted the house, and would have preferred to have had it for free will likely open their wallets and give in. Many many more people will buy the house because they had already become attached to the idea of owning it during the event. This is all psychological and in the end ZOS gets a profitable win/win.

I just had an idea for overly large houses. An option to create a pvp duels room. You could have duels with the ability to bet any item that would normally be tradeable. Winner obviously gets to keep whatever the loser bet.
You could also have the ability to set matches, best out of 3 or 5. Result would recorded. Your duel room would always have your current number of matches won and lost.

Yeah, that's what I remember as well. I saw a little bit of the salt there, but when I was in the stress test betas, the forums were only open to us during the weekends when we could play. The rest of the time, the forums were locked up.

Fun trivia: I legit cannot see my first forum posts, because they date back to that beta board that's since been archived somewhere and my account doesn't have the necessary permissions to see it.
