Cast time on Shields no good - Alternative Nerf idea
Or maybe they could stop nerfing things to the ground and try buffing underperforming abilities and classes instead?.. No, it would make too much sense.

I wouldn't even mind harness and hardened being both "Major" something. Sorcerer would have to still build differently, but one shield stack would be fine. But the cast time? Factoring in lag, all the melee stam, etc. It's just a stupid change. Absolutely uncalled for. No one wants cast times in a fast-action combat game. Trust me, I main a Magplar, and cast times screw us more than help us. But I also extensively play sorc. I mean, sure, building different is one thing, but the cast time. Hu.

I feel like it is a food timing to remove shields altogether from the game. Replace them with useful heals and cleanses and lets move one.
No one needs shields with 1s cast time.

I spend more time cleansing crap off me than anytime I need shields which does nothing for those types of damage. I used instant shields to mitigate more incoming physical damage (usually under a second), so I could regen health. I don't think this will even be feasible anymore. Sad day for me.
Horrible alternative nerf ideas:
- no magicka regen while a shield is up, in line w/ no stam while blocking
- consecutive use of shields gets more expensive, like dodge
- let every shield in the game scale with (max mag + max hp + max stam)/3 -> everyone gets the same bubbles no matter the spec
- the 3 things above together
- rework: if u slot a shield ability blocking costs magicka and stops mag regen, incoming dmg is halved
I hate the idea because damage shields can either be a proactive defense or a panic button. This Nerf makes them (at best) proactive defense. If zos are determined to take away a staple of mag builds I suggest they change one morph of sorc wards and annulment to make a damage shield that is a channelled ability. Similar to wards in Skyrim, the channelled shield would be almost instant cast and would constantly replenish while channelled, and when you finish casting it leaves a residual shield of roughly half the current value. This allows shields to function as a panic button but at a huge loss to dps.
It is not all bad, now that resistances buff damage shields there are new builds that become viable. I am on holiday but I am theory crafting two new tank builds to try on PTS. Both are 5-1-1 heavy.
1) torugs pact +infused weapons + damage shield enchant is about a 7k shield every 2 seconds.
2) ebon + bone pirates + dubious Cameron drink + wood elf nightblade + werewolf. 35k health, 3k Stam recovery so you can spam bone shield and brawler for instant cast shields all day.
#1 tip (Re)check your graphics settings periodically - especially resolution.
Make shields as every single cast of them increase the cost. Not casting shield for 3 seconds or so reset the timer. Means you can't spam shields. Cast time is very unnecessary. Critable shields make sense though. Also resists make shields stronger. Good changes them.
Allowing crit on shield is a HUGE nerf by itself already.
Ding Ding. That's the answer already.
People dont realize this is already going to help NB burst on shield users.
Plus every set or ability that grants some effect or ability on crit will be able to be used on shield users
Shield users in PvP will have to run more inpen, which means more opportunity cost.
