    News FLASH

Playing a video game well is NOT a virtue.

what's your issue with the type of game?

I have to disagree with you here in that, in online games outside the casual category, which ESO certainly is, your character is revealed in the course of playing the game. This does not make a good player virtuous of course. Rather in harder core online games, the conflict strips away pretense from players.

Simple fact is that you cannot be more than you are, or other than you are in a multiplayer environment. And it's not just how well you play the game, it's how you play the game that matters in an edgy MMO. This is both why the MMO was never as popular as mainstream entertainment and why efforts to shield players from that basic fact, which ESO takes GREAT PAINS to do, has put the genre in stasis.

The ultimate endgame in online games is revealing, and often discovering, who you are. Not a popular notion. Thus ESO, through its dilution of persistent player groups (5 guilds?!), the absurd number of characters you can have on each account, its rigorous segregation of players in PvE through instancing, its painfully absent structure in PvP, a non-existent justice system, removal of any meaningful risk, strips away the possibility of virtue from playing ESO.

ESO is good at one thing: helping you pass the time. Nothing more.

I dislike nerfs, calls for nerfs and stupid trolls.

I completely dislike the dumbing down of content and forced grouping to complete content.

Add to that a simmering hostility towards micro transactions in a game which I've purchased and pay a monthly subscription.

I dislike hints of things to come that never happen.

It's why I can't stand Korean MMOs. The only 2 MMOs on the market that aren't grindfests are ESO and GW2.

Some of these games literally demand 8 hours of your attention every day. This is supposed to be a game, not a full-time job. But of course they do this so they can sell XP boosts and other shortcuts.

If you can be attacked by another player, it's a PvP area.

If you can do quests unrelated to PvP, it's a PvE area.

See, this is why Cyrodiil is a mixed zone.

PvP is like a light switch, its switched on or its switched off. It differs from PvE in the sense that it's compulsory. You dont have to want to do it. Once you enter a PvP zone, you're engaged. How much PvE content is for the most part irrelevant.

That's not how it works, a properPvP zone doesn't have PvE elements, like quests, in it.

I get the sense that you haven’t played many MMORPGs... Every single MMO I’ve ever played has had quests in PVP areas, and several have had open world PVP servers.

Granted my experience has only been with two(EQ at launch until about 9 years ago and eso) but "class balance" is always a messy slippery slide. It can't happen with gear, power creep, power gamers vs casuals, solo vs guilds. Mix in PvP vs pve and it's a mess. That and pure melee get shafted(EQ only monks could solo halfway decently until WOW caused some changes) and eso is all hybrids starting off as magicka and gaining some stamina morphs.) At least eso is much more casual friendly.

Soloers who invade MMOs and demand that everything be changed away from MMO type mechanics to an offline single player style of play.

I was typing my response when I saw yours and figured that is was right in line with my thinking. This is something recent (last few years) that I've never seen in 20+ yrs of MMOs. Back in the day I looked forward to joining a group of random individuals and chatting while were pulling mobs. You really got to know players. Nowadays most just want to run alone and the games are starting to cater to that crowd thinking we all want it. I'm actually getting a little worried for the genre.

Yeah, poor or exploitative monitization is high on the list for me. So, not something ESO is guilty of.

I've played MMOs that literally expected you to pay money to (effectively) level up. It's a real turn off.

Also not a fan of games that tie endgame progression to group content. Again, not ESO, but something I dealt with in a previous game where once you got to endgame, the only remaining content was group based, where the vast majority of the game up to that point was either solo focused, or actively discouraged grouping.

I think the answer there is that the money simply isn't. With the exception of Eve, and maybe Second Life (depending on your defintions), sandbox MMOs never had massive populations needed to sustain modern production costs.

They're interesting games, but they need a population (in an already saturated market), and unsustainable development costs where you're relying on the players to create the content for you.

    It's a huge gamble.

    You make some good points.

I can't even remember the last fantasy sandbox that was tried.

What? The vast majority of MMOs coming out are sandbox shovelware (Black Desert, Ashes of Creation, Crowfall, etc.).

Sandbox games are dirt cheap to develop, so they've become extremely popular with indie devs. They don't have any lasting power because they suck though. Sandbox games, by their very nature, don't have any content. You're supposed to "create your own adventure", which gets boring after about 7 days.

The best MMOs are theme parks since they have actual content (quests, dungeons, raids, etc.).

Grinding for progression. I mean; I like a little just enough to customize and learn my character; but there seems to be a mind set that it has to be permanent to keep players playing. The persistent world and added content is enough for me. Would rather progressing be linked to actually just playing better and progressive more challenging content using new mechanics rather than a stat race.

There are people out there who will never can able comprehend this game, or games like this.

And again, this is where we (or I) will say, well there's nothing we can do. Nothing can be done about that.

The fact is, this game is not too tough to understand nor is it overly overwhelming. I want to see way more content than we have now. Particularly, this is pertaining to endgame.

There have been many (rl) studies performed that basically have come to the conclusion that, most people do not like having a ton of choices or options because they will feel overwhelmed.

I am not one of those people, and I do not support that. I usually will say the more options the better.

Balance problems and class-locked roles. You should be able to tank, dps or heal efficiently with any class you choose, as long as you get the gear and skills, but it’s not like that on most games(ESO included).
And ESO’s “range in PvE is much better” policy made me pretty much quit Trials, as I only play on my stamplar(and I really like my character).

Non of this really true. Of course one class will always be the best at a specific role. The only way to rid ourselves of this would be to make everything act the same with different skins for all the classes skills to make them look different. The way we have it now is fantastic. There are for sure ways to make a tank with any class. Have competed vhof HM with both nightblade and templar tanks as well as wardens and dks of coarse. Im sure sorc tanks could be done as well. Likewise stamplars are extremely popular for trials. A lot of guilds even bring them in to vAS+2 for the minor fracture/breach and they do just fine. Just gotta be good at playing them.
