If this is true then all watchers should mute the browser instead of the stream. No way they will know this.

I think that's not true because if you have to step away for a sec or mute it for taking a call then it would disqualify you? O_o seems unreasonable.
Yep I've read that if you mute a *twitch* stream it wont count you as a viewer. However if you only muted the stream for a bit as opposed the the whole time then I'm pretty sure you still would have been considered a viewer at some point and therefore eligible for drops
