combat companions

i think there should be combat companions in the game...they can be either capable of minor tanking, minor heals, or minor damage...VERY minor for each...so they can help on pve quests and such and because theyre more into what is happening in game, it feels more intuitive and realistic than the ones we have now...those who dont want the companions, dont have to use them, and in pvp they can either have very low health, or simply become more like the current companions...but i solo a lot and think it would be cool if i have an actual person with me that does stuff other than watch me...

I solo a lot too, and I still manage to make friends on a blue moon. If you want "combat companion NPCs", roll a warden or a sorcerer, or pretend the nightblade shade is your imaginary friend, but this is an MMO first and foremost, and you're going to have to work with real people on the other side of the screen to get the most out of this game.

I can see why you only make friends once in a blue moon. Drop the attitude, he just wants to run around with a companion not have it complete dungeons for him

You've got me all wrong. This isn't about gloating or acting superior, this is about explaining how you won't get much fun out of this game if you focus on being completely solo. The people who are already content with the level of solo-play available in the game aren't on here to complain, you see what I mean?

    2. Know-it-all elf Magblade - Healer / PvE & PvP
    3. Hate-them-all elf Magblade - Destrostaff AoE monster / PvE
    4. Cyrodiil-Refugee stamblade - Stamina Tank / PvE

EverQuest did that back in the day, you could hire an NPC healer, tank, or DPS. Came in really handy for folks who could only play in small blocks of time. They weren't OP, but they did allow you to solo slightly harder content. It also added another layer of strategy, because you had to decide what gear to use on your"mercenary", and you could adjust their responsiveness to certain situations, etc. Overall, I think it was an entirely positive experience.

I'm a hundred percent for companions doesn't matter if it's an mmo or no, that is really dumb think that if it's an MMO companions shouldn't be in game and a lazy argument companions in game doesn't hurt anybody and is a way for ZOS make money.

If had companions I don't think we should be able to gear them, BUT able to choose style of clothing would be cool make it just like now way outfit system works. I think the companions should be able to help people solo say at least lvl 1 maybe lvl 2 dungeons but become obsolete for veteran dungeons on up. I'd also like to be able to place companions in homes just you can with the banker, merchant, and smuggler.

ZOS could sell certain types and races of companion in crown crates, direct from store, or even have some you obtain in game.

This is called a Sorcerer. It's pretty great; they've been nerfed some, but a Flappy or Clanny friend, or both if you really don't like active bar slots, will take you through most of the content. And with Atronach ultimate, one of several hat/epaulet combos, and a Vvardenfell hunger set, you can have up to 5 friends in your "party" for a while.

Funny, I thought the game was an Elder Scrolls game and an MMO. I get it that MMOs have other people, but Elder Scrolls games have a rich solo single player history. I play ESO because of the wonderful mass and scale and pretty good combat system. Now, no game is perfect and the fact that ESO is an MMO is a drawback to me. It is still a good game that I choose as the current home for my elf.

That said, I agree with OP in that I would be happy to see NPC companions. Let me start by saying that actual combat help is not needed, I would simply sometimes like traveling with an NPC companion as company or to complement my character (ie, someone for my healer to heal). A fair question is 'Why not real people as companions instead of NPCs?' Either or both are fine but I would like the option for NPC companions for the following advantages they can offer:
    - They stay in character 100% of the time.
    - They have zero scheduling requirements. If you want to leave them at a wayshrine while you eat dinner, they don't mind a bit.
    - They have about zero potential for 'drama' or misunderstandings or chatting you up to do things you don't really feel like doing.

I don't think adding companions would really alter the game much. As written above they could have minor abilities/skills as to minimize their impact.

I would think it beneficial for everyone though if they weren't added to the pvp portion of the server. The hamsters aren't doing well as it is... adding those might kill them!

I wouldn't care if other players had a companion follow them around with a few caveats. They disappear in towns and crafting areas. Hard enough dodging flying pets when trying to craft something in town. They disappear when you join a group or enter PvP areas. The companion reacts only to the evil doer you are currently fighting. It doesn't run off on its own to play with the trash while you are playing with a boss. No Orcs in a wedding dress. Oh and editing for this...if he/she dies you have to use a soul gem to bring them back.

*waves at Acadian* I'd love this. With companions like this, I could maybe actually get through the solo questing without dying to my lag all the time. I had to explain again today to a nice person who invited one of my girls into a guild, that with 1.5 - 2 second lag on a good day, well, I wouldn't be of much value to their guild. I don't want to be "carried" by a guild.... Mostly I just want to do what I can solo, and spend quality time exploring. NPC minor companions would help me out a lot (even if I'm not normally into that sort of thing, in the SPMR TES games for instance).

those who dont want the companions, dont have to use them..

Those who dont want guildmates, dont have to join a guild.

But that's a conscious choice you're making. You shouldnt be supplemented with an NPC companion beyond what is currently available for Pet Sorcs and/or the Warden Bear just because of your own lack of effort to find other in-game players to experience content with.

I think combat companions could be a nice addition to the game. With a few limitations, though.

Most important: They absolutely have to be only available via in-game currency ! Or quests. (Which would be even more interesting !) Because one of the very good things about ESO is that it doesn't sell things for real money that have any impact on character power. So no combat companions in the Crown Store.
And preferably the in-game currency should be gold, because the characters that probably need this kind of companion most are usually too low-level to gather lots of other stuff (alliance points, undaunted keys and whatnot).

Secondly, they probably would have to be deactivated in PvP situations because they could mess with the balance there. But I'm no PvP gamer, so I can't say much about that one.

And for good measure I'll mention that they shouldn't be too strong, because PvE content is quite easy to begin with, and the more power combat companions have, the harder it would be to balance them amongst each other. And it would be really frustrating to have a system like that and then the one-and-only go-to companion that's so much better than all the others because whatever.

Aside from that - why not ?
Sure, this is an MMO, and you could play with others. BUT this is also an Elder Scrolls title. And there are people who aren't really here because they want to play an MMO, but because they want to play Elder Scrolls, and the only possibility to get any new content for that has been (and probably will be for quite some more time) ESO.
Believe me, I wouldn't have touched an MMO with a ten foot pole if there had been any new Elder Scrolls single player game after Skyrim (or Skyrim had been better, so I could play it again) ! (I have to say, though, that ESO was a very pleasant surprise. Still not a fan of MMOs, but you can do lots and lots of things in game without MMOing, and even if you do you can keep it quite relaxed and loose. (Except for trials and such high-end PvE, probably.) And you don't have to engage in any PvP ever, without loosing anything significant.
So Elder Scrolls did a good job in delivering an MMO that's a nice substitute for a full-blown Elder Scrolls (single) game. And I think it wouldn't hurt said MMO to have some nice PvE combat companions for people who like to play solo, if only for atmospheric reasons.

This is not a regular MMO... Actually much more than that!
It was built and thought to many solo players aswell (great PVE focus), roleplay community & etc

Its an awesome feature from Zenimax, to create something so well designed (has some flaws obviously) that combines PVP & PVE.
