Mad about Downtime? This thread is for you

@ZOS_JessicaFolsom poor thing, you got the job of posting the "extension" to Sunday... you realize giving until the end of day on Monday would have been more of a real extension. There is no mail or other delivery services on Sunday, so if a person doesn't get it on Friday or Saturday, they still wont have their code until Monday, perhaps not even until Tuesday. Many companies that mail games out don't mail until release. Just a heads up!

@Shineko you are trying, but unfortunately, gamers these days are not familiar with patience or understanding when it comes to their games and access to them. Old school gamers know the deal and we may get frustrated, but know it is how the industry runs.

ZOS has taken their game down several times for maintenance totaling in roughly a solid days worth. Does this make you angry? Do you feel betrayed? Let's look at the bigger picture.

    1) This is a brand new MMO using technologies not used before by most games. WoW was exactly the same way when it came out it was even buggier.

    2) ZOS is a relatively new developer and it will take some time for their techniques and experiences to ripen.

    3) Elder Scrolls games have been notorious for having glitches and bugs abound.

    4) Most of the downtime has been to prevent game breaking exploits from taking hold. Such things are only easy to detect when you have enough of a sample of players to find them.

    5) The game is just releasing, of course it makes sense that there are going to be a lot of bugs in the beginning. Over time, more bugs will be solved than created and will find a happy normal a month or two into the future.

Aside from the bugs, there are a lot of smart and ingenious features that are in the game and when you are playing, the game is legitimately fun. The quests are well rounded. In comparison to WoW, the questing is much more streamlined and less repetitive. There is a rich story that changes based on your decisions and a lot of freedom of choice around your character. Exploration rewards you.

ESO is a young, unique MMO that needs you now more than ever. It is understandable to be upset that there is downtime but it is absurd to want a refund over some downtime when it needs it most.

This is a pretty tedious post if you ask me. You constantly reference WoW as if it's the only MMO you've ever heard of. Well the launches of WoW was not a smooth ride at all but technology has moved on since then and this is the worst launch I've seen in quite some time. Most MMOs since WoW have done it better than this, Warhammer, Rift, SWOTOR, GWII, Neverwinter, etc. I don't remember any of these having so much downtime in the first few days.

Many people have pre-ordered the game purely on the basis of a 5 day early access that was advertised and this is not what they have received. I really don't know what Zenimax's experience has to do with it, or the state of past Elder Scrolls games. These first few days have been a poor experience with the game seemingly falling apart in stages; lag, bugs, disconnects, mail, guilds. It's not been good enough so far and the lack of thought the devs have shown in holding maintenance during peak time is not encouraging.

I'm not saying the game will fail but the launch probably has and it could get even worse once the game is fully live for everyone.

it is not out yet, their have been no first few days yet. ZOS has given a gift to those who have pre ordered the game, that gift is early access, you didn't pay for that at all. besides, the early access was a very good stress test for the devs, and i am glad they got such a good one. i am disappointed that i didn't get to play when i got off work that day, but that doesn't mean zos has in any way screwed me out of anything. only time will tell if TESO will have a epic launch or not, because launch is IN A FEW HOURS!! why would you get upset at a gift, offering the chance for a stress test before launch... Swavee!

These Quests have got stories, unlike LOTRO and WOW. It actually troubled me to make a decision in some of the quests. This game will become great, with time. This game won't be finished in a year. It's just releasing now, and as a MMO player, i know they'll fix everything, in time. Good luck Zenimax, i'll be right here waiting for you.

couldn't agree more, but i am a first time mmo player, i'm the other side of their coin. the TES fan. and yeah, the quests are a little more quick, or simple, but that has been happening to TES games since Morrowind. mmo fans can be ruthless, and give up on a game withing a year, but I am still playing Skyrim, no way will this game die that quickly.

The one thing they need to work on is communicating (on the forum and in game) if they are planning downtime. They probably knew about today's downtime long ago.

I have defended downtime and bugs, and love the game. Guess I am a "fanboy" to some extent.

I find their communication to players inadequate.

What time did the servers go down and what time is it now? I am pretty sure we are going over the 4 hour mark (or I am sitting here watching the water boil and it isn't going fast enough!).

To echo your point: Zenimax Online has only made ONE game.

    This one.

Then again Bethesda has made tons of games, so I'm not sure who is doing most of the work here and the director was head of Dark Age of Camelot so...

I'm not sure how much weight the "They're new" argument holds. I don't know if it is valid or not...

I agree with OP but still dont mean downtime has to be in EU prime time. There is a better way of doing downtime to fix all the issues you have described, And that is by not doing it in prime play time of an entire continent of players.

If this rountine of maintence stays, 1 day of play a week is lost for a lot of paying players. The EU megaserver MUST have a better maintence scheule. Otherwise I'll have £2 back a month off my monthly sub please.

I am not angry but more so disappointed. Not because of the down time but a few reasons.

    1. Lack of communication with the community is a HUGE no no.... When the server went down at 12 AM EST the community was basically ignored until the morning shift came on and Jessica got in the post and started treating us like we're like we matter. Did you notice how everyone calmed down a bit just by her simply communicating and joking around with the community? That made a big difference.
    2. The somewhat false advertisement about the pre order game in the aspect of content only being used by 1/8 characters. That's not a good thing. They should have said that before we went out and spent $80 for the pre-oder.
    3. I totally understand they will need to take the server down to tweak the system, fix bugs and make it better for the players.. BUT for "SCHEDULED" Maintenance Don't you think there should be a forum or better yet a feed specifically for that? So that we the consumers are aware of what's going on or what's planned.. And then 30 minutes ahead of time they should start warning people IG (In game) that the servers are going offline?
    4. It would be great if ZOS were more active as far as consumer relations is concerned. I mean we're paying a nice amount of money here you can at least communicate with us more then you have. Everyone that works at ZOS aren't techs so I'm sure a few people can go through post say a few words every now and then to let us know that hey... we're here and we see you.

But those are just a few things that I'm disappointed in.

I think my only slight annoyance with this is that I pre-ordered the game on Amazon as it was only £35 but I knew I wouldn't get it until Friday 4th April and fearing I wouldn't get to play it that evening, knowing how long the beta took to update on my connection I decided to cancel my pre-order and buy the digital version from the official website on Wednesday for £50 with early access so I could make sure the game was updated and ready to play by Friday evening. Although I hadn't really intended to play it before Friday I have still paid extra for a digital copy that promised early access but haven't been able to play it on either Wednesday or Thursday evenings as the servers have been down for maintenance so I am slightly annoyed at that, mostly with myself as I should've waited until receiving the physical copy from Amazon which was cheaper and it turned out that the game didn't take too long to update at all.

if the game had not gone through so many rounds of beta i would agree a bit with the OP. But sadly, there was a lot of beta and the issues that still persist should have been worked out. To have so much server downtime during a paid-for early release is simply unacceptable.

I don't give a damn about the extra few days they are giving. I have a lot more money streaming into my bank account than out. I paid for early access to get a few levels out ahead of the great unwashed masses. So much for that idea.

Well you should probably cross Warhammer from that list. They released their Game missing 2 classes and 4 Capitals. The Lagspikes in an RvR battle 40+ man were ridiculous and so on.And Customer Support wise lots of promises most of them broken i think Warhammer and SW Galaxies ar textbook examples for how to not do it.
GW2 had some of the same problems that eso has like npcs not respawning propperly or events that just don't end or restart before rewards ....
But People forget easily and everything was better in the old days right ?

imo this was a rather smooth early access Phase. Yes there were maintenance and bugs and broken Quests that wouldn't restart but compared to let's say Age of Conan at launch cakewalk.
But to be honest most of the downtime didn't effect me because i work the night shift and I'm not home until like 2 a.m maybe that's the reason why i don't feel this anger and rage XD

    cheers and Beers
