Mad about Downtime? This thread is for you

ZOS has taken their game down several times for maintenance totaling in roughly a solid days worth. Does this make you angry? Do you feel betrayed? Let's look at the bigger picture.

1) This is a brand new MMO using technologies not used before by most games. WoW was exactly the same way when it came out it was even buggier.

2) ZOS is a relatively new developer and it will take some time for their techniques and experiences to ripen.

3) Elder Scrolls games have been notorious for having glitches and bugs abound.

4) Most of the downtime has been to prevent game breaking exploits from taking hold. Such things are only easy to detect when you have enough of a sample of players to find them.

5) The game is just releasing, of course it makes sense that there are going to be a lot of bugs in the beginning. Over time, more bugs will be solved than created and will find a happy normal a month or two into the future.

Aside from the bugs, there are a lot of smart and ingenious features that are in the game and when you are playing, the game is legitimately fun. The quests are well rounded. In comparison to WoW, the questing is much more streamlined and less repetitive. There is a rich story that changes based on your decisions and a lot of freedom of choice around your character. Exploration rewards you.

ESO is a young, unique MMO that needs you now more than ever. It is understandable to be upset that there is downtime but it is absurd to want a refund over some downtime when it needs it most.

Mega server technology is not new, and they had many years to learn, started 5 years ago to develop the game.
People are mad because they put this downtime so US will get their prime time but EU not.

3 days early access is a selling point for selling preorder copies. Robbing ppl of 1/3 days is bad.

    @NicoNine
Can you site a source for Megaserver technology being 5 years old? I tried a google search but all it is is ESO and that GW2 is now releasing it.

I'm not angry that it's down; I understand that's just part of playing an MMO, especially a new one.

I am, however, annoyed that they didn't see fit to warn us more than 5 minutes in advance, even though this was apparently planned. It's rude, inconsiderate. Some people took time off for this (not me, but some did).

WoW was down for almost the entire first month of release, then was plagued by dilapidated hardware that could barely run the server under any load. I wish people would seriously take off the crown of self entitlement and realize that the titans of the gaming industry have all had release problems, and much worse than ESO.

This is the first MMO in the history of ever where it launched and you could hit "login" and actually log in without an error. Rift was the probably the smoothest launch in MMO history yet even they had log in errors.

People just like to complain, so they will. No amount of logic will prevail there.

Yeah i agree with Melian. I have played many MMOs and I expect downtime and maintenance during it that is not the issue. Nor is the fact that there are bound to be bugs and glitches. Yesterday, the US server was down for pretty much 14 hours. The first communication about what they were doing and a rough ETA was given after 8 hours. otherwise it was just repeating the other messages "The server is down". It is about communication, some people will never be happy but if you give people communication or respond to a general theme regularly then you will appease most people. Ironically, Neverwinter which in my opinion is a horrific game has amazing customer service on the forums. So far the communication from Zen/ESO/ whoever in my opinion has been shoddy and needs vast improvements. Just wish at some point someone would make an amazing game like ESO with just as amazing customer service to boot!!

It makes me angrier that their customer service is almost nonexistant. I can't even download the game because of a metafile bug and all they will tell me is that I need to restart the damn client.

I must admit I have found this a quite a bit frustrating as I have been waiting so long for this game and when I get the early access and try to log in on Tuesday evening the servers are down, I log in on weds night after work get an hours game play and get kicked out due to servers going down again and then tonight I log in to find out they are down again so out of 3 days early access I have had about 3 hours worth of game play. I don't mind as its only early access and I completely understand that there is bound to be teething problems and only hope that these problems will not continue this bad once game is out on general release otherwise I can't see my self sticking around.

P.S so far what I have played I have loved every minute of and really can't wait to progress.

All good points but unless there was a bug that was going to totally break the game why not let the EU people have our last night of pre-access and then do the patching overnight UK time - as an operational IT guy I can promise this is nothing that servers techs are not willing and able to do to avoid in hours downtime.

If it was a game breaking bug that absolutely had to be fixed then make that clear in the announcement - might reduce the number of angry customers.

As so often with games companies they need to learn that customer communication is the key to minmising anger - take a lesson from ME3...

People are just mad because they invested everything else they have into it.

Mainly, to all the people saying they want a refund for their 3/5-day early access... There's nothing to refund. You payed the same amount of money as the guy who walks into GameStop in 2 months and buys the same version of the game as you.

Second off, if you did any research at all in the last month, you'd know that they planned on bringing servers up this evening.

If you didn't get enough play time in during the 100 +/- hours that the servers have already been up, and you're complaining about them being down until official launch, maybe you should take a few hours to relax and get your priorities straight.

Honestly, I'm glad the servers are down for a little bit. I don't want to be burnt out when the game is actually launched tonight.

Emegency maintenances are expected. Bugs are expected.

Planned maintenance is just that, something they planned, something they know is coming and can choose when to do it. Today, they failed EU and hopefully it will be a clear message to them not to ever do the same mistake ever again.

Agree 100%. We PAID for early access, either the 3-day or 5-day variety. And this is an ONLINE service that is PAID out of the subscription part of the game purchase. So I PAID for the April 4th service and then added another 5 days to it with the extra money that I gave them. So offline, is bad business for an online company and charging you for an item that is not fully delivered is false advertising.

Sorry, but trust me, this WILL happen again, and most likely soon (as in tomorrow or saturday). Why? No system has ever survived meeting the hordes of users.

I have to disagree with the OP here, I think they could at least communicate better with us about when the downtimes are going to be. Doesn't matter if it's a new game or an old game, it's not hard to send an email to people letting them know what's going on (or even a message more than 5 minutes before the downtime occurs).

Once again comparing this to other games...excuse #1

They should have sharpened their techniques in the beta testing...excuse#2

    3) Elder Scrolls games have been notorious for having glitches and bugs abound.

    Just plain old excuse #3

Can we say beta testing? I knew you could...excuse #4

This is a pretty tedious post if you ask me. You constantly reference WoW as if it's the only MMO you've ever heard of. Well the launches of WoW was not a smooth ride at all but technology has moved on since then and this is the worst launch I've seen in quite some time. Most MMOs since WoW have done it better than this, Warhammer, Rift, SWOTOR, GWII, Neverwinter, etc. I don't remember any of these having so much downtime in the first few days.

Many people have pre-ordered the game purely on the basis of a 5 day early access that was advertised and this is not what they have received. I really don't know what Zenimax's experience has to do with it, or the state of past Elder Scrolls games. These first few days have been a poor experience with the game seemingly falling apart in stages; lag, bugs, disconnects, mail, guilds. It's not been good enough so far and the lack of thought the devs have shown in holding maintenance during peak time is not encouraging.

I'm not saying the game will fail but the launch probably has and it could get even worse once the game is fully live for everyone.

These Quests have got stories, unlike LOTRO and WOW. It actually troubled me to make a decision in some of the quests. This game will become great, with time. This game won't be finished in a year. It's just releasing now, and as a MMO player, i know they'll fix everything, in time. Good luck Zenimax, i'll be right here waiting for you.
