What were your newbie mistakes?

Most the usual stuff, wearing mixed armor, no food / drink, walking into Vet dungons for the first time thinking I was a full on hero (so was not), no blocking etc.

I will confess, I did a most recent noobie mistake on my first run of cloudrest. When I received weapon overload, I thought it was imbuing me with more damage and any allies within the large blue AEO, needless to say I tried to cover as many of my allies within the blue AEO to imbue them also lol then wondering why everyone was dying. Needless to say I learnt my lesson, but did cry with laughter after :D

Nord magplar created wayyy back at launch.

At VR12 she even successfully healed my first ever AA run.

Still have her and will never delete her.

Same thing. Nord mageplar called temmplar around launch as my first character. Nfi.

I think i race changed him as soon as it became a thing. He is my main healer snd crafter now as a high elf.

My first run of Maelstrom Arena on normal difficulty, I got to round 6 and saw hoarvors crawl towards these green beacons. I misinterpreted the green beacons as poison AoEs that must be avoided at all cost. So I hugged the shadows and got swarmed by mobs the entire time. As a templar healer, I could outlast the mobs for quite a bit, but not really kill enough of them to overcome their spawn rate. There were sooo many that I spent all my time keeping Harness Magicka, Channeled Focus, and Purifying Ritual down...with Puncturing Sweeps being my only damaging ability and something I had to spam to stay alive. I literally couldn't barswap or I'd succumb to the sheer number of hits I was taking.

      It wasn't enough.

I reset several times before I called it to rethink my build. It was only later that a friend explained that the green beacons are actually safety and repel the swarm of mobs that were wrecking me. Literally could not have played that level any worse.

My first noob mistake was making my main a stamina nightblade at launch. For the first 2 years stam blade was barely playable in most content, and not welcomed at all in any trials.

      Thankfully that's changed now.

Another noob mistake was splitting crafting up between characters, but at launch there weren't as many motifs to deal with so it seemed to make sense. I've since researched all blacksmithing traits on a 2nd character so that character can do all crafting now.

I did something similar, on stage 7 I would interrupt the argonian boss. Wasn't until I did vet and kept dying to his enraged damage that I would figure out what the actual mechanic was.

I got the game last summer (2017). I wanted to play a tank, so I used sword/shield. I did every quest there was in all DC and AD zones and halfway through EP zones someone asked me why I didn't use a 2H to speed things up. Doh!

In VHRC (back then it was just hrc, there was no normals) my first raid guild (shout out to Deviance and Mary, PCNA) used to say 'shield toss!' for the shield toss aoe and 'jump' for the big jump the final boss did... my first time in, they were all shield toss! I had no shield so ok! Then jump! And I would smash my space bar like hell and still die!

In TS: WTF!!? You said JUMP and I jumped and I die, why?!

Dying about 50 times in Normal Fungal Grotto I. Was playing with friends----all of us new to the game and obviously had no idea what we were doing--ie: crazy builds, no gear sets, and our healer was a Nightblade with Sap Essence:). Finally, we all gave up declaring the dungeon too hard to do! Now I can run it solo to farm gear...lol

      Great times:)

      OH....Does Golding out Oblivian's Foe count...lol

      UPDATE
Kind of happy I kept the Golded Oblivian's Foe with the new changes coming--may be time to dust it off!! :)

We are going to have to go back 5 years into Beta for this one. I thought you needed to get all 5 pins to the bottom to unlock a chest. And you would break a pick if you don't center it exactly on the pin. After breaking all my picks, I just gave up on chests for my first few play-throughs.

I split my attributes equally between magicka, health, and stamina..

Back in the days of softcaps that was a good strategy.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
      ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

i put all my points into stam while using all mag skills on my magblade because i had heard in passing the stamina is the NB trait. so then i switched all my points to magic but everyone was talking about how good steel tornado was so i thought if everyone though it was so good i should use it too. good times

My first character was a heavy armored Dark Elf bow using hybrid nightblade (this was when nightblades were pretty much bottom tier for everything). I did absolutely everything wrong that could be done wrong. I remember it used to take me like 5 snipes to kill one basic enemy, and I'd be out of stamina. These days I pretty much walk by them and they die :P

The biggest one I'm still making is that I haven't joined a guild, and I'm utterly convinced I'll be able to be totally self-sufficient in this game. I'll have to surrender my independence eventually, but I haven't gotten that desperate yet.

You can be totally self-sufficient in the game; guilds are convenient for a number of things, but not compulsory. I am in one only for trading, myself.

That isn't me trying to discourage you from joining a guild, depending on what you want to do in the game - particularly trading, or group content, or PvP - it can be a useful thing, provided that you find the right guild for it. I just wanted to say it absolutely isn't obligatory.

I did that, as well, and I don't consider it a mistake. The game was level-gated, and I had absolutely no patience to slog through the main quest and the faction quests and many other stuff to level, before even taking a look at another alliance's zones.

I started playing the game a few weeks back so I'm still making them (two words; Soulfire Plateau).
My biggest one so far (if you can actually call it a mistake and not plain ol' stupidity) is that I thought only a certain number of players could use a crafting station at a time, like in Skyrim with the NPCs. I didn't know players actually clipped through one another. So I'd loiter around the area, pretend to look at my map and then just...awkwardly run away.

I didn't realize ports to guildies were free and paid a fortune for them before realizing.

My first character I leveled with a sword and board and heavy armor and split all my stats evenly.

I split my crafting on several alts like most MMO's not realizing the motif situation before moving it all on one. Which for some crafts meant starting over. (realized it far to late in the process :( )

Fishing for a long time getting a great deal of used bait not realizing water type mattered bait wise.

First time I went into pvp could not figure out how LEAVE.

Mixing up a delve and Group Dungeon and wondering why it was impossible alone with my tiny lowbie.

And i am sure a lot more I cant think of atm...

when i was very new, and didn't understand the interface too well yet (like the difference between blue and green, for instance) i saw people with their merchants out in the wilderness where no merchant would be, and moving around in ways that no regular NPC merchant would ever do, and i couldn't sell to them.

i thought the <Merchant> tag under their name was a guild of clever trolls.

I created a Stamina Dragonknight because I thought they sounded cool... that character has been my dedicated crafter for the past four years because I cannot stand playing a DK whether it be Mag or Stam. I just don't find the skills to be 'fun' to use; I'll take a Sorc, Templar, NB or Warden over playing another DK.

-Trying to spread my attribute points evenly thinking that more health would help me survive as a magsorc when I soloed

-Putting skillpoints into the Bow. I thought using the bow would be like Skyrim, where you could eventually headshot something across a room in stealth once you got far enough

-Using wayshrine ports like candy. I didn't realize at first that the cost escalates so you don't do them practically back-toback. I was wondering why I was poor all the time when I first started out.
