Now I fixed this mistake lol.
I did that with my first character and little did I realize a master crafter was created.

Was around lvl 10 and came across an opened treasure chest and thought it was a random spawn and that I found a holy grail piece of loot because it contained a lvl 50 cp160 rubedite 2h greatsword. I kept it in my inventory for several weeks and it's part of the reason I came to the forums as to figure out if it was worth anything but I turned out only to be disappointed. I also was disappointed with the 2h greatsword. :D

Didn't know that the delves in Cyrodiil were also PvP. I took a break by a delve entrance and came back with the blue screen of l2p by said entrance. I figured it out then and I thought, "Just wait til I'm able to use that rubedite 2h greatsword".

Ran around for 2 weeks without anyone responding to me when I would answer a WT* request. I also kept asking a friend I was trying to help some questions and after 2 weeks he unfriended me and both of which were due to me being offline and not realizing it. I felt so terrible and stupid.

I was really into crafting. The first month of playing I farmed jute so much I still have enough for my early crafting alts for daily writs over a year later. I also put too much emphasis into health and didn't understand how dd, tanking, and healing worked and I set myself up to be able to craft Song of Lamae as soon as possible and I ran around in SoL, Plague Doctor, and a staff with an absorb health glyph and thought it was awesome how nothing could hardly kill me but it also took me forever to kill anything. I was impressed with myself even after it took me 15 minutes to solo a dolmen.
If you are angry about anything in this game you are only punishing yourself.

I purchased bank slots from the crown store. This was before they specified how many slots it increases. I thought I was paying for max bank slots.

The first time I picked up an Elder Scroll in Cyrodiil ... well, I *might* have scurried all around the map like a chicken with its head cut off with red or yellow zergs hot on my tail, while also trying to figure out why my blue mates were screeching at me via voice and text chat.

1: I was thinking that the weapon damage applies only to weapons and spell damage only to skills.

2: I met some Literaly Immortal DK in my first week as a Werewolf in Cyrodiil who was kicking my arse in a split second , Few months later i learned what Emperror stands for ^^ .

before 1.6 and Imperial city launch Weapon dmg was used for weapons (include staves) and spell damage was used only for class abilities.

Oh I made sooo many mistakes. I always thought this game was hard, until I found out how badly I played the game. Now I enjoy it a lot more.

    - I never used food, because I thought it only healed for a small amount, just like in the other Elder Scrolls games. No wonder I died so often.

    - I thought crafting was completely useless, and I sold everything to merchants. I also DESTROYED Aetherial Dust several times.

    - I didn't use the trading system to sell items, I always thought that crafting mats were useless and worthless.

    - When I discovered how valuable crafting was, I made several characters with different crafting professions. Now my main is my crafter as well.

    - I deleted and restarted so many characters because I thought their build was terrible. I was clueless about respeccing.

    - I didn't know that my alts would have a horse as well (after you got them with one character). So I wandered around with my alts on foot, until I made 10k gold (which I had to pay for that standard horse which I already got).

Being a presumptuous level 10 newbie and assuming I could clear the halls of fabrication trial on my own, armed with crystal frag and a heal pet. Took me 40 mins to clear the first group of trash mobs and fell off a cliff and died before I even got to the boss.

Before ESO, I had never played any combat related MMO before. So I’m standing outside Fungal Grotto and somebody asks me if I would like to join a dungeon group? “Sure!” I replied. Then he asked: “Would you like to be a Tank, Healer, or DPS?” What the hell? He wants me to be a mechanized armored vehicle? Or someone who goes around with bandages trying to tend to their wounds? And what the heck is a DPS? Needless to say, I embarassingly bowed out and my next stop was a online MMO dictionary :)

While not a newbie mistake - I recently had what should have been an entertaining event full of drinking and friendly competition turn into a bloodbath where I had to flee the scene.

In the Rift, on the West side of the area and near the Autumn's Gate home, is a small community where they are having a bit of a celebration. Lot's of drinking, a few contests to partake in, and an owner who couldn't be happier putting it all together because he is looking for a local champion!

One of these contests is to go around the party and pick fights with certain people - because that's what you do when there are potential champions running about and endless amounts of mead to consume - naturally.

While in the midst of one of these impromptu battles amongst the crowd - I accidentally hit an innocent bystander with one of my daggers...(what she was doing standing in the middle of a battle is beyond me... any normal person would have decided that was not the best place to finish their drink...)

So, she begins attacking me along with the potential champion. Always being the gentleman and fully believing in equal treatment and rights for all sexes, I obliged her willingness to challenge me. This, of course, didn't go over so well with other party guests and what was a one-on-one battle between willing combatants, suddenly became me surrounded by one willing participant, and at least 5-6 other people who suddenly decided that they needed to be involved.

Including the owner of the home. The person who was putting the whole thing together in the first place.

What should have been just another night of casual drinking and good-hearted competition - instead became me, slaughtering damn near everyone at the party - all because one woman who had too much to drink didn't understand that standing in the middle of a brawl was a horrible idea.

I too did not realize that wayshrine to wayshrine was free, and I really wish I had all the money back that I spent teleporting back then. Thousands at the very least.

I also sold gear drops I didn't need instead of deconning them. AUGH, what a waste of time and inspiration!!

The funniest newbie mistake I made still makes me laugh...I ran around for several levels wearing Intricate and Ornate gear!

    1. Accidentally trying to log into my Beta account in the first few minutes of launch, delaying logging in to my actual account by 20 minutes and missing out on getting some of the names I wanted for my characters. Like, even one of the names would have been nice to have. Blah.
    2. Not getting that disguise from grahtwood that was part of a quest that was removed from the game; the disguise had a beanie-sort-of-hat, shirt and pants.
    3. Not leveling up crafting on all of my characters right after launch. It was so damn easy because deconstructing stolen goods gave the same inspiration as non-stolen goods. It's still easy to level it all, but still.
    4. Not researching traits as soon as I started. Likewise for my horse stats.
    5. Holding on to nearly everything that dropped because the way things were named... 'Xxxxx of Fire' sounds pretty epic, but really it was just run of the mill crap I held onto forever; they werent even set pieces.
    6. Not getting emperor on my main prior to hitting 50.

Not starting crafting Trait research and sticking with it constantly. I learned reasonably early it was something useful to have as a crafter, but I would often leave it sit idle. I probably could've completed all traits 3-6 months sooner if I'd kept on top of things from the get-go.

This thread is great! I had no clue about free teleports at the shrine until I read it :o That's probably several thousand gold I've shoved down the drain since I started playing a month and a half ago.

I didn't use food for the first three weeks I was playing, couldn't figure out how to use soul gems until about four weeks in. I just kept buying new staves and using every new one I picked up :D

I must have killed myself falling off of a million cliffs forgetting I couldn't glide like in GW2. I used to think I could outswim slaughterfish if I hit "shift" long enough.

I had no idea until a few days ago that stats on your gear weren't to make up for the stats you don't select when you level up. I died a lot.

The biggest one I'm still making is that I haven't joined a guild, and I'm utterly convinced I'll be able to be totally self-sufficient in this game. I'll have to surrender my independence eventually, but I haven't gotten that desperate yet.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for sharing! We love to see the community come together and compare notes on the less than informed and sometimes a little embarrassing things we've done at one point or another. It's nice to see that we all share the same growing pains when deciding to take on a new MMO and that, at the end of the day, we can all have a good laugh.

You should all be taking notes from this. These types of stories are where games can learn to be less confusing and more new player friendly by figuring out how to make it more obvious how to do something or just simplify it so it doesn't need a tutorial.

I was ignoring all the hints we get in combat - so I kept standing in red, because Í had no idea what that even meant, I never blocked anything and dodged nothing - and of course had this way a hard time to get anything done really. I never played an MMO before which had these markers on the ground and other clues about an incoming heavy or special attack. Ah, and I did not use food or potions as well.

Can it be done any more newbish than i did?

I forgot about potions! It took someone mentioning in chat that you could map them to the Q key before I figured out you could use them outside your inventory. I was level 28, I think.

Not really mistakes but things i am not proud of: i too played way too long in first person view until i got some armour that granted a shield and i couldnt see sh*& anymore so i switched to 3rd person...
Another thing i am not proud of, i was farming fungal grotto all weekend, up and down, i know every plant in there by its name, just to find out that there is no viper bow anymore - dont ask me why i wanted one, one weekend wasted.
And of course i did the mistake to craft my first gear, upgraded it and then realizied i was crafting simple gear and not the set.
