The Nova Ultimate - PvP and PvE

The Nova Ultimate is in a tough spot for PvP right now, its usability in PvE is debatable. While it is a very nice Ulti for some trials (especially for less experienced groups), offering the only source of the Major Maim Buff in the game, its cost is very high and often gets outshined by Aggressive Horn. I would still say that it is in a viable spot for PvE, as many groups still use it for damage mitigation. It is also necessary for PvE to have this Ult cost alot, as it offers a very strong buff to the group.
However, the use case in PvP is limited, for various reasons.

The biggest reason is probably that Nova is a ground-based Ultimate. This means that it is static and can be negated (and probably will be in a situation where using it would matter). Also, PvP is very mobile nowadays which makes Ultimates with a very high cost and a static effect very situational. This was partially addressed by making the Nova debuff stay on the enemies after moving out. However, this is not enough (especially because the effect obviously can be purged after moving out) and will not make templars use the ultimate in a group-based scenario. They will much rather use a healing ultimate, which is just flat out great for keeping their group alive and arguably one of the best ultimates for group-based pvp right now.

I understand that a morph offering mobility a la Eye of the Storm / Permafrost would probably be too much. Thats why I suggest the following change:

1. On activation of the synergy, the templar gets 10 Ultimate points back for each enemy hit with the synergy, to a maximum of 8 players hit.
2. On activation of the synergy, the templar gets 10 Ultimate points back for each friendly player standing in the nova at the time of activation, to a maximum of 8 players.

The numbers mentioned can obviously be tweaked by the internal testing team. Also, my personal opinion is that this behavior should only affect players and not mobs in PvE because I think Nova would otherwise be too strong in PvE.

In general, please consider negate not affecting ground based ultimates. This would open up so many new possibilities - Veil of Blades, Nova, Standard and Forest are all ultimates that suffer from negates heavily in PvP.

If you have other suggestions on how to improve Nova, feel free to share them below! :)

That happened because you didn't get out of Nova fast enough

I ate a 13k shackle synergy from one guy the other day, the new harmony trait really made these ults strong again

I play as a Templar healer mostly in PVE. I am torn between wanting major maim to be more available to other classes and wanting it to be a Templar exclusive. I think in PVP it is in a decent spot especially with the addition of the Harmony trait. It is supposed to be situational and it has always been very strong versus larger groups.

Both ults are absolutely amazing. And when you drop them both...

Congrats to UF for being very fast on picking up the new meta, both screenies are from day two of summerset (though only the first one is from me).

That depends on the standpoint. Please consider my comments in contrast to a 10-12 people environment. Of course, when you are zerging with 16+ and have 6 templars anyway, it doesnt matter as much.

We have also been using them in our raids with harmony trait. I do agree it offers quite some damage in combination with Harmony. However, consider the following:

    1) You need to drop 240 Ultimate for it - meaning it can´t be up in every push

    2) They are stationary, so unless your enemies are really unexperienced or you are fighting in really tight spots like keeps, they are easily moved out of. As mentioned in the main post, they are obviously also negatable.

    3) They can only be really useful in an offensive kinda playstyle, countering the real usefulness of major maim and therefore part of the "idea" of the ultimate.

    4) A Healing Ulti might be more interesting for your group to help you survive.

    5) Your DDs need to drop quite some damage for it to be useful.

Of course, one might also argue that these Ultimates behave differently in Non-CP than they do in CP.
From a CP-Standpoint, you might need the insane burst to kill the people, also you have more ult reg. In Non-CP, a Dawnbreaker or usual Deto-Bomber does the job just fine. (Im coming from a non-cp standpoint)

Just to clarify, I´m not saying the Ultimate is in a bad spot, I said it´s in a tough spot. I think for PvP, the cost could be reduced a bit, therefore offering the mentioned passive ult regen with syngery.

    It's that high.
I think vs 0 impen and with full buffs you could reach 25k hits
