    1. restart your computer
    2. edit the usersettings file BEFORE opening the game
    3. start ESO

This wil ensure that next time you edit the file, it won't be still open by any running process

It sounds like you're saying you changed the .4 at the end of MaxCoresToUse.4? Dont do that.. just change the part in quotes

    SET MaxCoresToUse.4 "x"

    @Ankael07

exactly. If you really changed anything else in addition to the value between the brackets then you have essentially changed that tweakable game parameter into a new non-valid one while you have deleted the existing one. That's why the game will recreate this deleted but valid parameter upon next game start and set it to default values

You need to set your user settings file to "read only" after you make changes to it.

sorry but this is wrong advice. The game manages it's settings (that you click and set in-game) through storing and modifying this exact file in the background for you. Setting it to read-only would prevent that. As a result suddenly changing settings in-game wouldn't work anymor or they wouldn't stick upon next crash or game restart

After playing/testing last night I can confirm the major hickup/stalling problem is gone by the 4.0.8 patch. I had a pretty buttersmooth play session last night compared to before the patch under same conditions.

I tested by doing 1 hour of Alikr dolmen farming, 5 raids, 30min of hanging around in Craglorn/Stormhaven and completing 2 pledge dungeons

All tests performed on a clean 'reference' Win10 system build 1803 lastest windows patches installed without running antivirus or additional background programs . Before starting the game I used Process Explorer for a period of 5 minutes in order to verify and validated that no other (background)processes were utilizing any cpu cycles for 5min before starting the same. I confirmed a flatline for cpu load in process explorer on all 12 (hyperthreaded) cores over a 5 min period.

hardware was maximized in order to remove any possible single core and multicore bottlenecks: 8700K@5.2Ghz, 16GB@3600Mhz, Samsung NVME SSD 960Pro for OS+game, second Titan XP gpu removed and SLI profile disabled to force single gpu scenario and remove any possible SLI-related issues/bottlenecks. All components custom waterloop cooled to remove any temp bottlenecks. If you consider this hardware as an "ideal" reference system then with the current patch at least on that system the game runs buttersmooth under all conditions. That's a good start for elimination proces

I only tested last night with all values to "-1" for cores and workers, just as the 2 days before in order to clearly feel the difference under equal (multicore) conditions. Absolute lowest fps drops were around 40 during cloudrest trial and Alikr Dolmen, anywhere else typically ranging 70-120 and 165fps (my monitor limitation) flat in solo areas.

all this proves to me that the patch did in fact resolve the issue and whoever is still experiencing hickups/stalls or extreme fps drops right now has another cause to identify for it. This could be hardware bottlenecks, sub optimal defined user settings, windows background processes or antivirus that runs off with cpu cycles at certain times during the game, windows 10 trying to install patches nonstop in the background, wrong power management settings in windows, Intel speedstep clocking the cpu down after ramping up or one of the other 100 possible causes that are not related to the game

This patch (from yesterday) allowed me to gain around 30 FPS. In alinor it went from 30-40 to 50-70. Overall great patch for my PC (I5 4570 4 cores and R9 270X vaporX 2GO). Allowing me to play once again with shadows, water reflection etc in lower. In oveeworld It is between 70-100 fps.

I deleted my own usersettings.txt file, adjusted in game some graphics settings to low (like water reflections/shadows and others settings that were automatically set to high and ultra), reduced a bit the number of particles etc.

Still getting those weird lags after exiting certain wayshrines. The game lags for a few seconds then goes normal.

    Need more patching.

There are indeed some occasional random delays present at times (not just noticeable at wayshrines btw) but those look more like the usual (temporary) server-side bottlenecks because of overpopulation. ZOS server team is no doubt all over it but get prepared for some more of that as summerset is launching on the other platforms and then a few weeks for everything to stabilize fully.

Yup. That's a different issue. The client-side stutters and micro stutters introduced with Summerset are pretty well gone with 4.08. My performance overall is now better than pre-Summerset.

No. It will reset custom settings from time to time if not set to "read only".

It's a matter of convenience. If you know what you are doing, there is no harm in setting the file to read only. When a performance patch comes out (like this one), simply delete the file so it can rebuild.

The stuttering is gone for me.

I've been jewellery farming at dolmens the past few days, and I would always stutter several times (long stutters of at least 1s) as I run from the wayshrine to the dolmen on my mount. No stuttering as of today.

Been playing for a few days now. Confirming that the stuttering is completely gone.

    I have an R5 1600.

Definitely improved on my end. However, the issue when alt-tabbing and browsing then alt-tab back deteriorates the performance up to a point where I need to restart the game because it won't recover from huge stutters.

Running at very high except: (PvE Environment)
    • Shadows Quality > High
    • Maximum particle > 803
    • Particle suppression distance > 45
    • View distance > 60

Numbers can be increased at zero performance loss if played at full screen and no background tasks. However, cyrodill settings are set in very low because I hate lags when PvPing.

Some patches will cause your settings file to "forget" settings.

Other times, you could accidentally change an in-game setting, that will reset your custom changes.

If your goal is to prevent unwanted changes to the settings file there is a better way that does not involve breaking game's standard functionality. Simply make a copy of the settings file. This way you can always restore this backup of all settings while the game can keep making it's standard (and necessary) background changes.

There is most definitely harm in setting the file read-only. Many forum users here are not computer-savvy but just use their computer to play games. If all those people blindly follow your advice today and set that file to read only, they won't understand why suddenly in a few months from now after applying the next DLC patch (when the devs decided to implement necessary changes into the settings file much like the multicore changes now) the game suddenly no longer works correctly for them anymore while it works for all other people who applied the DLC patch, all because those settings could not be written into the file at patch time since it was set read-only in the past. Not in a million years will they link the read-only change you made them do to months ago to their newly risen problem that seems to happen 'because of the DLC patch'.

I can see the 'ZOS you broke my game' forum threads already while you're happy gaming...

You are correct, the same high latency and ping problems including continuous DC's started happening to me as well since yesterday 6-6-2018 and this just 1 day after my buttersmooth play/test session that really confirmed the multicore client side problem of this thread being fixed.

Since these latency problems are new, unexpected and clearly not related to this thread I have chosen to make a new thread for those. I invite you and anyone that also experiences it to contribute with as much useful data (geographical data, etc...) there as possible:

i noticed a few improvements with summerset and they are significant for me
im often playing witth two windows(two account)
on second window i always had a freez when trying to sprint - now freezes gone

degradation - when you playing for few hours or more game become more buggy - more lags or some kind of delays - now degradations almost gone

What about the main game zones? I took a sprint through Rawl'kha on a mount and every time I passed an invisible boundary between one "cell" and another (within the city limits), my game would lose a little more than half its FPS (from 80 to around 30) for a full second. The visual result is that it looked like a Gumbi cartoon. The more of these invisible cell boundaries I cross during that time, the worse the hit on my FPS.

Hi, I write here just if its helpful for anybody in the same situation. I use a dual E5-2670 (16 cores, no hyperthreading). I've tried everything modifying the usersettings.txt etc, and the only thing that solved most problems was deleting usersettings.exe and all addons and setup them again. Finally I can see all cores working parallel sometimes at 25-50% except the main thread that is at 80%-90%. At least, is not like always (a main thread with 100% and lagging everything on the game, and 12-13 cores with almost no use.

Thank you to the developers for the good work. I know is not easy doing such big changes while having the system online. Now try to finish with that awful lag in PvP, those looong loading screens (sometimes more than 4 minutes), those threads that locks the game during some seconds and those disconnects that tell us we don't have a good internet connection (lol)

Thanks everyone for the information! The stutter many of you are experiencing now is new with this patch. With the info and videos you have supplied, we've been able to track down the sources of these and are currently working on fixes that we'll get out as soon as possible. We've also discovered that if you have Game Mode turned on (Windows 10 users), it can significantly negatively impact the performance of the game with the Summerset patch, so it's worth double-checking if you have that enabled.

Additionally, when customer support recommends disabling your addons to help with framerate issues, that's not a blind recommendation. In practice through performance analysis, we've seen a large number of popular addons that can impact framerate. Some are a constant impact, averaging 2-4ms of CPU processing time per frame, but we've seen as high as 8-10ms. Some affect it during combat, and some decrease framerate over time until you reload your UI or your client completely. Addons are not multithreaded, and their impact stacks cumulatively. This is why we recommend disabling them when you have performance issues, though we understand many prefer to make the utility vs performance trade-off.

We may also recommend that you delete (or change the name of) your UserSettings file and let the game generate a new for you, and this can genuinely be helpful. Sometimes that file can find ways to get in a bad state after a patch. We also often see people making modifications to that file and then recommending those same modifications to other people. While well-intended, this can often lead to problems because no two people are likely to have the same PC hardware, so if you have modified your UserSettings file, we definitely recommend letting the game make a new one for you. We only recommend changing those settings if you have a solid understanding of how it will impact your machine.

If you've done all of that, and you're still not seeing any improvements, it may well be that your CPU is not your limiting factor with ESO, either because you have an older graphics card, or because your graphics settings are high enough that the GPU time becomes the bigger factor. You can try changing those settings and see how it looks and feels for you. Shadow Quality and Reflection Quality tend to be the heaviest factors. It may also be that your particular hardware combination doesn't see as many improvements as others because these changes won't affect everyone uniformly (as evidenced by the wide range of reports about the changes).

We're still working on performance improvements in a variety of areas of the game, in the meantime we appreciate all this feedback and information. And thank you all for your patience while we work to resolve these hitches/micro-freezes.

    So,... When's this patch coming?

There's a random stutter every so often, it occurs for half a second but its noticeable.

This is the only bad I have seen with the patch. Performance in general has been better to the point I re-enabled SLI for the first time on ESO in like 2 years.

Edit: Did have some model rendering issues since Summerset though but just assumed it was broken textures. This was the day all the lag was occurring in Cyro though.
