Questionable Email From Dev Support

Has anyone got emails from Dev support regarding email tickets that ask for their secret answer? I could see them needing it to confirm my account, but, providing that info in an email really sketches me out.
I was looking for an account name change and they said

"But before we can give you a new and more empowering name for your character, we need you to provide us with the answer to your secret question, just for your account safety's sake."

Couple issues, I asked for an account name change, not a character, and they don't mention what my question is, they just ask for my answer.

The email domain it is coming from is- ESO_Help@helpmail.elderscrollsonline.com

Any thoughts?

yeah, I read about another person this morning with a simliair email when trying to redeem account codes problem. Its legitimate according to the zos person that jumped in. However i still wouldnt provide it via email. Just reply back and request a call back and they will call you at the number you provide and do it in person.

That seems super shady. I would DEFINITELY not respond with your answer. Any secret question/answer should be performed on the official ESO site to ensure validity. I would assume it is a phishing attempt.

DO NOT provide this info via a email. More than likely its the damn Gold Spammers looking to get into your account.

No game ever asks for your password, or other secret data.

A lot of their support folks seem to be new at this, and they are likely still ironing out proper protocols for dealing with account issues. That said, it has been confirmed elsewhere that these emails, if in direct response to something you asked about (with a ticket number for the problem) are legit.

If it's just a random email without you opening a ticket, it is a phishing attempt, though, no question.

Great Idea, then I don't give them my number, they can call me at the number in my account!

    Good call, thanks Auric.

Yeah, I got those and supplied the answer. In my case it was the only way to resolve my issue. I did go back and change the secret question though.

A lot of times they ask for the question. Not sure if they mean question or answer though. I wouldn't be worried, unless it is from an unknown email, or you didn't ask for support via the ESO website.

They ask for it for security measures. If anyone in game claims to be a dev and ask for any info, do not give them anything and report them.

Ok, general consensus and Mod response is that those are legitimate emails. Will someone please tell the powers that be at ESO that this is not good practice? Every MMO in the world clearly states that they will never ask you for this kind of information.

    Mine came from:

Yep. Looks like the same one to me. And yes, they asked me for my secret question to. They do have to verify the account somehow, to be fair.

I would add that you should get the number from support and confirm it matches when they call back as it could be a poser.

Hi, welcome to McDonald's. May I take your order?

And would you like to supersize that for 45 cents more?
