New styles dye terribly

I doubt anything will be done regarding it, but I guess it doesn't hurt to try... the new styles ( divine prosecution, sapiarch and Psijic Order) dye absolutely horribly with dark colors. They look washed out and way too bright. It would be amazing if this was reviewed with the design team before hitting live.

Earrindo✭✭✭✭✭I agree completely. Every dark dye I tried was washed out and way too shiny. They are clearly capable of making armor that dyes well (Tsaesci takes dye beautifully) yet every single new style looks too bright and completely washed out.
It is just a complete mystery to me why almost all the new motifs weve seen lately have this problem. Whoever designed the Tsaesci motif needs to be put in charge of how all motifs dye, and whoever has this fascination with hyper shiny washed out colors needs to be sent to a different department.1 -

I posted screen comparisons using Ophidian jade, which isnt too dark a dye, but you can see the color differentials quite clearly.
The problem isnt that the new styles dont dye period, the problem is that even the darkest, most saturated dyes are washed out to a pastel, mirror finish version of itself.
Coldharbour Ash Black should ALWAYS be a matte, black black. Yet on any of these new styles, it looks silver at *best*. This is just bad texture work.
If I want a dark matte green on my Sapiarch robes, I shouldnt have to settle for a light forest green with too much shine.

✭✭Is there any technical knowledge about how the dye system operates? We know that the rendering mechanism is combining diffuse, specular, transparency, glow, and other channels to produce the visual result, and that the dyes influence more than one of them, but we don't have any detail on what operations the dyes perform, and on which channels.
I haven't seen any dye affect saturation. If an area is unsaturated, like the suede-like parts of the Balmora outfit, then it stays that way regardless of the hue applied, which must mean that either the saturation is a separate channel the dye doesn't affect, or the operation used to apply the dye has that limitation.
But specularity does appear to change with dyes.
It would be nice to know what's possible and what's not. We can't change the way the rendering engine works at this stage, but the dyeing operations might be mutable.0 -

Coldharbor is pure black, Legate is a little blue and notably lighter. The only armor where what you're saying is true on is Dark brotherhood, because it has a reddish tint that shows through everything (the blue in legate helps cancel it out).1 -
