Yeah, ironically, this is pretty close to what I was about to write, before I skimmed the thread.
I'm not even sure if there's stuff I straight up miss from the old days.
From my perspective, I'm happy with how the game has progressed since beta. It offers something for everyone.

I was a huge fan back before animation prioritization was changed. Animations still don't feel right half the time.

I'd say, in time when I was starting my first toon. That was the moments I liked ESO the most and well remembered

And the veteran zones, where you were sent to other alliances after completing the main quest, were also more challenging. Shame they were so scarcely populated.
While I like that the world is opened up to everyone now it also has eliminated any and all challenge from the overworld content save for world bosses. Basically, in some ways I'm nostalgic about the early days when there were some challenges in the main quests and overworld. Lyris Doppleganger used to be a nightmare. Pretty much anytime one of those snake lady daedra were present I felt my stomach turn. Now they all feel ridiculously easy. Same with dolmens. I feel like they used to be events you actually needed other players to accomplish. Not sure how much of this is my skill as a player increasing with time and how much of it might just be how much they've nerfed them.
All the time since PC launch, I didn't play the beta. I've always enjoyed the game equally, and have never had any issues with the changes over the last four years.

Agree 100%. I don't need a hardcore overwold experience, however, some challange would be nice. Apart from the new world bosses, you can't even try out different skill roations and builds because no matter what you do, you win. Mobs rarely actually hit you at this point. Nothing is more annoying than reaching the end of a quest chain when you finally face the bad guy and you kill him with two hits before he can even finish his challenge/dialogue or move an inch. Talk about anti climatic.
Again, I don't need hardcore but I do actually want to have satisfying combat. There are so many buids and skills and the overworld PvE should make it necessary to switch it up from time to time (multiple mobs, end boss ...).
PS: I remember the daedra snake ladies ... quite the challenge way back when
With many caveats. This was when I was still pretty new to the game and was doing a lot of the content for the first time. There are definitely things I do not miss about the game back then: the old vet system, scaled mat nodes that made competing for certain mats a nightmare, trying to group within your own toons' faction only, and how end game content felt completely out of reach for a newb who didn't run with the game's most elite players back then.
But there are things I miss: the lack of crown store frills, the sense of progression that was originally built in the game (outside of the vet level grind that eventually overtook that and made you feel you were grinding away for nothing) and the general pve content didn't feel so watered down.
There are things in the game that are vastly better imo now and would not what they to revert back to how it was then--the issues i listed above were the main reason I left he game around the time TG came out and didn't return for several months-- but I am glad that I started the game early enough to experience it at that stage. In the very least, I get what old vet players mean when they make a Doshia joke (my very first encounter with Doshia was quite an experience to remember as well)..
