Fishing, any advice.

Apart from the well known knowledge of fishing in groups and using the right bait for the right water, does anyone have any advice or advanced tips for fishing.

There are 2 different bait for water, one from the overworld, one found in water, does the bait found in the water make any difference in chances of getting rare fish?

I have been sparingly solo fishing in stonefalls for months and I cannot get 3 blue fish from foul, river and lake water, but while going for a green fish from ocean water I got the blue fish multiple times. What is up with this?

Fishing in ESO is heavily RNG based, and a definite grind. There isn't any real difference from using any of the 2 different types of bait, unfortunately - again the RNG is so strong that it is pretty much purely luck based.

I have been fishing on several of my past toons, but have only recently decided to go all out to get all the achievements on one char. I so far have AD and EP completed, and am working on completing the rest.

The only real advice I have for anyone fishing is to do it as they natural go through zones questing, to reduce the feeling of grind. The way I have gotten most of my fish have been from forcing myself to fish at every hole I pass - it takes discipline and it not always fun, but it's gotten me this far in my journey

I have been in debates since PC beta, wanting them to tweak how fishing works, but it has never been touched - and most likely never will. So we just have to live with the killer RNG.

I read while I fish. I did my first character's Master Angler without add-ons, but if you are on PC, I can't recommend Votan's Fisherman enough. The audio cue when its time to reel in the fish has made going for Master Angler a 2nd time so much more enjoyable.

If you have children who are young enough to enjoy fishing ... Get them to do it while you do other things like make lunch , tidy the garage etc

If you don't have young kids start a child labour ... I mean baby sitting service

Fish while waiting for other things. Are you a DPS? Do you do pledges? Queue for pledges and fish while you wait for the group to form.

Don't be discouraged by RNG. You'll get the Blue Monkfish and the Midget Salmon eventually!

I usually caught up on some tv shows on my second monitor while I fished. Using Votans Fisherman for the reel in sound queue and then setting all volumes other than UI off make it easy to just lay back and relax with my controller. I also transitioned to a work from home position so some days when I was on lengthy phone calls or in meetings I was also fishing!

I've gotten my Master Angler but sometimes I wish I was more motivated to fish every time I watched TV just as a side way to perhaps make some gold on my ESO "downtime". Anyway, best of luck to you!

Well my only other advice then would be to do it while watching something on the side. The beauty of dual-monitors, as I have, is that I usually watch some YT or such - makes the experience more enjoyable. And if you don't have dual monitor, just use your phone or tablet or TV

    Good luck out there!

Sadly, no. It's just another wasted cast, along with gummy sacks and home decorations.
I have been sparingly solo fishing in stonefalls for months and I cannot get 3 blue fish from foul, river and lake water, but while going for a green fish from ocean water I got the blue fish multiple times. What is up with this?
It's called "Zenimax Math", as developers who work for Zenimax clearly do not understand odds or percentages, and instead, use a ridiculous system to "randomize" "percentages" while throwing out artificially and completely unnecessary cool down timers.

I've heard fishing in groups helps increase the catch rate of rare fish, but the only thing I've seen of this is a faster closing of a fish hole. I've not personally seen any improvements vs. going solo. The game isn't really too clear on what constitutes a "group" to raise the chance. 5? 22? The entire player base of ESO? Who knows.

This next one may be coincidence, but I could swear I catch more blue fish while it's raining. I just caught another last night, and it started raining when I caught it.

There's also a legendary drink titled "Hissmir Fish-Eye Rye", which helps identify the fish in the water. Not sure how useful it is. In fact, I don't think I've personally ever seen the drink or the recipe. Huh.

Just from my experience, I tend to have better "luck" going solo. I say this only because in some spots, having a hole dry up much faster when a group is at it seems counter-intuitive if you have to stand around 30 minutes waiting for the hole to respawn after it closes in 2 minutes, when at solo, you have it for at least 6 minutes to yourself.

So pull up a chair and get busy. You'll be at it a while, no matter what option you choose.

In my experience, and it has been a while since I have done this, is the group needs to be 5 to 6 people, or more. 2 or 3 others gives a slight increase but nothing notable. And, you have to be actually grouped with them, as that is the only time I have fished and pulled mostly Trophy Fish from a hole.

It is relatively easy to be in a 3 or 4 person group and fish, it's finding more people than that where the difficulties are, outside maybe a guild fishing event.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I have fish eye rye, i have used it a few times you can see the holes like the keen eye passives for crafting and it tells you what type of water it is, though it doesn't say "lake, river, ocean, foul" like the community know of the types of water. it just says "fresh, salt" ect.
you can make it out but I never have an issue finding water, or what type it is, plus I would use an online guide on my laptop showing where the types of water are.

^this. it was one of those things that looked interesting on first sight but became clear immediately afterwards that it is of no practical value. tells you the kind of water you are looking at but if you're serious about fishing you know anyway. it also gives a boost to stam and mag regen.... i'm sure you'll agree that's essential for fishing.

Xbox na - stack of fish are around 20 to 25k. Perfect roe. Some people pay extra for the rare bait.

Ok so some answers first. Normal bait or special baits doesn't affect your rate fishing chance (catching a foul rare with roe fish or crawler is same).

Now some math. You have 5% chance to catch a rare fish when you are alone per reel. For each person fishing the same hole the chance increases by 5% and caps at 20%(so it caps at 4 ppl).

When you catch a rare it is 1/8 blue.

To summarize when you are fishing alone you have 0.625% chance to catch a rare blue per each reel.

No need to worry about AD zone. Once you pass the last AD keep you are safe. No one will check along coasts to see any DC/EP fishing. Fishing in cyro was easy for me never got ganked and in imperial city I only ganked once, also a decent enemy player saw me fishing in imp city and joined me fishing till I cleared the hole and left without attacking me.
