Talking about magic 'making sense' is going deep amigo

What makes sense to me is a mage having a sword. Zap em at range, stab em up close.

I don't exactly hate them... I just would want an alternative! Like the "Spell Foci" idea I keep mentioning along with my other thoughts of weapons: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/371862/additional-weapon-skill-ideas-mk-ii

not all magic comes from the human, it can come from a focus.

Like harry potter, and TES, and D&D.

I just hate the looks of them. There’s no really cool stages in the game.

I want a scythe! I know there’s one, but it looks more like a sign post than a scythe.

It's also not a TES thing. Casting always required a free hand in TES games.

Not true, oblivion allows you to cast spells while holding weapons.

I actually never liked that casting always required a free hand in the other TES games (I think, in the single player games, it should be both). But yeah I wish there were more magicka weapon options (not staves) even though I also want alteration and illusion staves to be added

Oh my, alteration and illusion staves *_*

my guess none of you understand how staves work?

you cast the magic the staff is a focus point. you put magic in the staff as a focus and release the energy.

In TES staves are enchanted and the magic comes from the staff itself.
of the mmo and rpg i played ESO/TES staves make the most sense.

Something like that worked out for another MMO

rdm is ff14 is actually over powered. the way the class works us the orb attaches to the hilt of the rapier and acts as a staff. you have to balance black and white magic then go in with an enchanted sword to slash up before jumping away and picking a finisher spell. It can melee, cast nukes and has a strong cure. It can raise people and it has a duel cast trait that every other cast is instant.

I've played red mage, but the point isn't whether some people consider it OP. It is about the weapon style of the caster and the animations, particularly given the "sword and rune" and "sword and orb" requests that pop up from time to time on these forums.

I don't a have problem with them. To someone who mentioned staff animations in Dragon Age, I've always found those to be a little over-the-top personally.

The one thing I think looks really silly is the staff bash. It would make far more sense to me to bash with the butt end of the staff.

Agreed. The animations and the way the staff is used in ESO is just dreadful.

If we have to use them, why not be like that:

Magicka dual wield = wand+spellbook. Why isnt this a thing?

*prepares link to the Arcanist class from another game for animation of ranged spell-casters using books as their weapons to show what that might look like/entice readers to drool over the possibilities*

      - - - - - -

In general the answer to the question of "Why not this type of weapon?" at minimum involves:
      • 5 new abilities, an ultimate, and passives that have to be theorycrafted and balanced with regard to other skills lines, gear sets, racial bonuses, etc.
      • a suite of new art and animation and sound assets for the new weapon
      • a place for the new weapon in the games combat system -- not just immediate balancing (see above) but the overall fit of such a weapon in the game and a function/purpose/role that is not already covered well enough by an existing weapon. That, and right now the greater number of stamina weapons is a counter-weight to a greater number of magicka-based class abilities

      That's just to start.

Doesn't mean they won't ever do it, but it would be a long process that they would need to feel was worth the investment.

A simpler route is weapon skins.

We already have an outfit system that allows you to replace the appearance of a dagger with a sword. But, they both have similar animations, just swap out the object. To add a rune-and-sword look or a spellbook you would still need the second bullet above (a suite of new art and animation and sound assets for the new weapon) which would "reskin" a staff but the skill line and weapon functionality would remain the same.

To justify the cost these would be definitely be Crown Store purchases ("limited time offer to get the spellbook appearance for staves"/"try the new scythe appearance for two-handed melee today"/etc.).

edit for spelling ("route not root")

Staves would be ok if they didn't have a triple wall between ur skills.

They don't boost all sources of damage. Only 8% to specific skill types.
You have to have an ability slotted to get the 8% from the staff line.
      Less spell damage than DW.

If I choose a lightning staff on my magplar, he only gets puncturing sweeps boosted.

If I choose fire staff, all of my heavies will act like dark flare and be dodged and sweeps doesn't get boosted.

Only thing good about lightning staff on my magplar is lightning heavies...that's it. ***

I get so bored of sticks. I hardly ever play my magicka characters except magDK, but the flame staff fits with the theme of the class so it doesn't grate on me as much as the others. It gets old going poof poof poof with the stick all the time. Give me more options please. Enough with Elder Staves Online.
