There is an addon for that and you dont even need to discover locations first. In fact addons significantly enhance gameplay so much i would never dream of playing this game on console. Skyshard, lore book, quest locations...harvestmap, awesomeguildstore, mastermerchant, craftstore, TTC... i could go on. I cant imagine playing the game without all those addons that make the game much more bearable.

Spending days running around clicking on books and rocks isn't "playing" for me and many others. After doing it once, I have no desire to do it again. The boring grind is one reason I won't be playing much longer.
Nope, you can't have my stuff=)
Rejoice - it already IS optional! The best way to do this would be as some others have already said: make it an option...

Some people enjoy putting their heads in ovens. To each their own I guess.

You can choose to grab all skyshards, and get the skill points for each of your characters...
...or you can choose not to on some of your characters, and do without the skill points!
Much like you can choose on each character to have them grab the mages guild lorebooks and max the guild progression, or not and do without meteor or the other goodies...
Much like you can choose on each character to slot a skill and raise it to morph and max it, or not and just forget that particular skill...
Much like you can choose on each character if you wanna PvP and unlock the cool stuff from the assualt and support skill lines, or not and do without vigor and caltrops...
Much like you can choose on each character to have them steal for fun and TG advancement, and max that guild, or not and do without all the perks a member in good standing gets to enjoy...
Much like you can choose on each character to train your riding every day, or not and make do with a far less useful mount...
Much like you can choose on each character to have them murder for fun and TG advancement, and max that guild, or not and forego the advantages you get as high level assassin...
Much like you can choose on each character to actually play them and gain experience to raise your level, or not and let them loiter forever in coldharbour...
...
Much like you can choose for yourself if you want to actually -play- this game, and reap the character-improving rewards within it, or rather go out and have a beer or whatever.
But as I keep mentioning, that's not what people are talking about. They don't want options, they want to get something on their alts without spending the effort again. We have these threads all the time - most often about achievements or riding, but also skyshards and lorebooks, which have arguably way more game impact due to coming with skill points and mages guild advancement.
Its more like... people saying "Ah, nah, its too much of a bother for me to play that part of the game on an alt, so gimme!" and then cooking up some sort of flimsy justification how it would be "quality of life" if they were allowed to bypass the effort. How they deserve those freebies so "they are not forced to make the effort". And how it would not effect anyone else since "they can still work for it if they want to".
And that's why I call then "The Gimme Crowd" collectively. Also to showcase my rather low opinion of that entitlement mindset.

And the fact remains that ZOS already decided to give everyone playing ESO -more- account wide stuff then in any other MMORPG I ever played through shared bank, guilds and the whole bloody champion system!
And yet there are still greedy people who have the chuzpah to demand more, who have the sense of entitlement to think they deserve more somehow,as we do not wish to see the game demeaned that way!
Yes, we DO think that if you want something, you should work for it, and if you want something twice, you should work for it twice!
Its not like all the rooms in your house are cleaned after you clean one room, now is it? So why should all the characters on your account get something when you do it on your main?
As I said, if aou care enough, you will do the work another time for this or that alt, and if you don't care enough, you will do without on this or that alt. Your choice.
And the best you can possibly expect from ZOS is to monetarize any "shortcuts" just like they did with the crown riding lessons. Which I really would not mind, that way the impatient ones support the game with their eallet instead of spending theit time.
As much as I love to re collect 1000 collectables it would be nice to only have to do this once per account. Nothing burns out new users more than a necessary grind to make other characters viable. Especially on console, we don't get addons.

yeah powerfull mageguild and fighter guilds ults on a lvl 3, dont see any problems with that (sarcasm)
sure they should update map locations for skyshards/lorebooks on console, or find a way to put addons on consoles (wich would be a great thing)
making thm account wide is just a dumb idea and is not what they are made for (collecting i mean)
personaly i like to hunt for them on each new character, gives me a reason to go in boring delfs and stuff

I bet a majority of people don't like to do it, why can't we have it both ways. I also answered your concern in the OP with soft caps to prevent level 3s with meteor. And this topic is only about lorebooks and skyshards.

Because this is an MMO, not a single-player RPG, and both 'ways' would have to be balanced so that neither is more powerful. A toggle is nice for the people that want to do the skyshard hunt themselves (which is a much larger group than you think, so watch out with the bets you make) but having that toggle also means that players who don't want to do the grind again will have access to much more skill points much earlier in the game. This is anything but balanced - especially from a PvP point of view. Adding a soft-cap does not mitigate this.
EDIT: This shared-experience/achievement/whatever discussion pops up every now and then and I really don't understand why people would want this. The game works a certain way. Characters need to perform (a certain amount of) quests, tasks etc. to earn more skills, experience and the like.. and if you want to progress more than one character through the game's story, then you are more than allowed to do so. But you can't apply one character's experiences to the other. This is an RPG. Every character is a new individual, a new story, a new adventure. The only thing they have in common is the narrator - you. You wouldn't skip to the ending of a new book, just because you've read something similar before.. would you? Doing so would be cheating. And in this case, you're cheating yourself out of game-play. Which is weird... because you've started a new character to enjoy more game-play.
It's an ignorant mindset, frankly, and you have proven you're missing the point.TheShadowScout wrote: »And that's why I call then "The Gimme Crowd" collectively. Also to showcase my rather low opinion of that entitlement mindset.
How bout just for console players? PC cheaters. . . Er . . . no, thats about right. PC Cheaters already have mods to make it STUPID easy to do.
The best way to do this would be as some others have already said: make it an option. That way those who want to get all skyshards with all new character can do so, and those who don't enjoy that aren't forced to do it. Personally I see no reason why anyone would be against this, as it would only effect the person who makes the choice.
If people are going to give the "just regrab the skyshards for the skillpoints" and "no gimmes" *** then you can *** off. I'm sorry, but if you want absolutely no "gimmes", then start a forum right now asking ZoS to reset your cp for every new* character, no random daily dungeon bonuses, and no account-wide dyes either. No "gimmes" right? You want us to just do the time-consuming work all over again. ZoS has changed a lot of aspects already in the game, and if all these ZoS Justice Warriors would shut their traps over something that doesn't do any harm to them, maybe we can get more of those changes.

Based on your position, CP points shouldn't be distributed to alts immediately. Fine. ZoS, please remove all CP from players who didn't "earn" them on the alts.
Once the massive exodus clears out when people leave the game, perhaps then you'll understand the issue.
ZoS changed the game. They did so to make it easier for people to create alts so they can enjoy the game. It's much, much easier to level an alt now that it was when the game was released.
Ask the majority if they want Veteran ranking returned and overwhelmingly the answer would be "HELL NO!"
Now, given this, the restrictions of leveling those alts now runs into an issue of skill building. Leveling 1-50 is faster than ever, but skill leveling has not been given the same treatment.
One Tamriel broke the mold (thank goodness), but introducing the CP system now put many behind this arrogant attitude we must "earn" everything.
I don't disagree, but the hypocrisy remains when it comes to CP.
You either understand the issue or you have your CP removed from all alts who didn't earn it.
Let's see how the audience reacts if people feel CP should be reset back to "1" on their alts.
The entire point of giving players the opportunity to quickly level alts comes from the fact most people don't fill 8 slots of characters having the same class, skills, and attributes.
Most I've seen look like this:
stamSorc
magSor
magBlade
stamBlade
etc etc
All possible because alt leveling is now quicker.
I've not met one single person who enjoyed leveling 8 alts in Veteran. I'm sure some exist, but most hated the grind.
All to get alts who are flexible for grouping, rather than constantly spending gold to respec.
This is the issue. It has nothing to do with "gimme", but more to align what's already been given to us: faster alt creations.
