Why 'DPS'? It's a 'DD', isn't it?

Just curious. Here in ESO everyone says 'DPS player', 'DPS class', 'as DPS'...
Damage per second player? You queued as a damage per second?
It always've been a Damage Dealer, but in ESO it turned into DPS. Weird.
One of the two of us definitely has gone mad. It only remains to define whether this one is the whole world or just me.

    I think that the usage of "DD" and "DPS" is a regional thing, and the reason it's mixed in ESO is because all of Europe is playing on one server. When I was playing WoW on German or Russian private servers, it was always called "DD", but when I switched to an American one (and later moved on to an official English European one), it was "DPS".

    No, the OP is right : calling a damage dealer a "DPS" is absurd and horrible. But it isn't the first nor te last time that the crowd goes blindly for the wrong thing.
    Many people use "DD" in ESO, though.

    Does it matter? There's no difference between DD or DPS.

    (in comparison to Healer and Supporter - there is a difference)

    The term "DPS" started being used in WoW. Since then, it has stuck as an anomalous but much used term.

    Maybe it is like the hip young kid thing. Sure it is the same as DPS, but my dad was DPS and he is old and dumb and doesn’t understand the hip cool new ways of the DD!

    I’m surprised this is leading to so much debate!

    The correct terminology is “DD”.... it really doesn’t matter though if called a “DPS”. In fact DPS is far more widely used in ESO to the point where many players don’t even understand what DD means. They think you’re referring to Dromathra Destroyer :lol:

    Jokes aside, its just common habit and not an issue .

    DPS is about quantity and duration, DD is about dealing damage only. I guess it feels right to emphasize on the fact the damage must be dealt quickly but continuously.

    DPS is your job.

    The higher the dps, the better you're doing your job. Getting big numbers every few seconds isn't doing your job, but you can still be considered a "damage dealer" when you do that.

    Actually it predates WoW as I remember it from Everquest where you had tank classes, healing classes and dps classes.

    They are a tank because they tank damage. A healer is a healer because they heal. A dps is a dps because that is what they do, dps. Seems pretty consistent across the board.

    DPS has been used for damage dealers since the dawn of MMOs
    same as the game series has always be called TES
    until ESO :)

    but why care? most know what is meant by either DPS or DD
    same as almost everyone refers to a 'meat shield' as a tank

    That would be because how well you're doing isn't being judged by how much HP you heal per second. Instead, you're being judged on being able to keep your team alive.

    A DPS is being judged by how much damage they do a second. Therefore, they are DPS.

    You might be if people actually measured hps as a thing. But if we go by this example both DD and Dps are wrong. They should just be damage. Like a healer.

    DPS = Damage per second.
    This is very confusing especially for new players. Overall it means how much Damage your character can do. However even when it comes to different add-ons that tells you how much "DPS" you can do it is always measured for longer time than "one" second. This means that even if you have lets say 30K DPS - it does not mean you will be able to deal 30K in "one" second or even "per" second. It is only a theoretical, abstract value.

    And don't forget that we have a 2 scenarios here:
    - Sustained DPS (the constant dmg - mostly for PvE dungeons).
    - Burst DPS (dealing A LOT of dmg for a short period of time and then being on "cooldown" - mostly for PvP content).

    I've noticed that DPS is more commonly used on the NA server, while on EU it's mostly DD.

    Just as interesting - on NA people type x to join a group and on EU it's +

    Just because everyone got "used to it" and understand what's meant doesn't make it correct.
    DPS is not "what you do". What you do is deal damage (hence "Damage dealer" is correct").
    DPS is a measurement unit.

    Calling a DD a "DPS" is like calling a car a "MPH". Or "KMPH".

    Nope. If DD/DPS was a 'damage', than healer would be a 'heal'.

    I see this another way. It's all about roles in a group. Tank 'tanks' enemies, he does crowd control, taunt and absorbs damage. Healer heals, protects (with shields) and supports (depends on a game and class mechanics). Damage dealer deals damage (high DPS - good damage dealer, low DPS - bad damage dealer, but still his role in a group is damage dealer).
