I've had something similar happen a few times. I thought it was extremely odd that people would give me advice when I had killed them several times with no deaths. As it turned out, one of them gave me great advice that led to some outrageous 1v1 win streaks. I guess knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things.

Plenty, but this was my first and still my favorite:

Once I was noodling around in Cyrodiil looking for a fight, when I came upon the Ash-Nik milegate. Predictably, there was a big zerg v zerg fight there, so it was either turn around and look somewhere else or participate. I found some decently small-scale engagements on the outskirts (3v3 fights etc.), until I noticed I was being attacked from behind my own side's lines -- an AD magsorc and stamblade had snuck around behind the DC group and were trying to pick off solo players, including me. So a few other DC and I turned around, chased them down, and killed them. It was a nice fight, though we did outnumber them.

After this the magsorc informed me that I was a "zergbad" and would never be able to beat him 1v1. Reasonably taking this as a challenge to 1v1 him, I accepted (I had been looking for smaller fights all along anyway), to which he responded that he wouldn't fight me because I didn't "deserve the honor" of 1v1ing him. Apparently I hadn't realized how much of an honor it was to be attacked by him in the first place! Sadly I've never run into him again to thank him for the favor he bestowed.

Bonus edit: my most mysterious hate tell, which boggles me still. I was riding around in Cyrodiil (near BRK IIRC), quite alone as far as I knew, when out of the blue I received a whisper from a player I had never (to my knowledge) met before. It read, simply "*pathetic". My response was simply "?", to which they responded "you only say that because you're salty". After this they blocked me so that I could no longer whisper them. To this day I have no idea what I was salty about or what I did that was pathetic.

I got one for 'exploiting' and 'abusing' battle levelling on my low level Sorc. It was God damn OP though to be fair, a proper zerg wiper.

Usually, it's a name thing. I run with a group of 4-8 friends now and then. We use different toons depending on what we are doing (e.g., overland v. IC). Who gets the hate messages seems mostly tied to how easy it is to message you. Two or three of us tend to use one word, simple names. Sometimes people even send us messages to give to someone else in our group. That's fair, we are all in voice chat together, I would have told them even if the message was directed at me.

No actually disliking someone or even putting them on ignore for that matter in PVP is redundant, if you do receive one it's most likely either an attempt at doing that pvp hing where you anno people and annoy them in a way so they don't play so well, which is all part of the game or the guys a moron.

You have to say in PVE the ignore function is relevant (no one wants to play with realy annoying people in pve, who don't understand civility) In pvp sending annoying messages also relevant to the game in pvp, it's usually just a means to an end to annoy and make you less good at the game while you obsess about it. As long as you don't break the EULA rules in pvp, people will do what they wilt, and that is the whole of the law.

From my last pvp experience I know that some players does not like when making /cheer over any dead player. Or this /bellylaugh, probably some feel it like some mocking. But it was developed for Battlegrounds, right? So shouldn't be a problem. Someone is laughing at you? Laugh at them in return.

Someone said I "exploited" the game and was reported because I was a nightblade and stealthed inside their flagged keep and after it was defended and the wall up, I started killing them inside their own keep and he said I glitched myself inside the keep.

I used to get em occasionally when I'd play my ganky overload sorc that chugged invis + speed pots like there was no tomorrow.

I'm also guilty of sending them when someone is cheesin' it hard lol

I got hate tells a couple times, it's a nice novelty for me because I'm pretty bad at PvP, and I just keep throwing myself into the grinder in hopes of getting good.

One time a guy called me a *** noob spammer, which I couldn't really disagree with. That was the time I had said screw it and took my PvE gear in, for huge damage and zero survival/sustain. My swallow soul took him down in three hits.

All I could say back is "Yeah, still killed you though."

Sometimes I message players who consistently beat me asking what they are doing to burst me so quick etc, but funny enough, there are a lot of players who aren't interested in helping others get better. It's almost as if they don't want a fair fight.

I got a hate whisper, but the hate was not aimed at me. I clearly tried to complete a quest (and clearly suck at pvp) and get to a skyshard. Got ganked by the same player a few times. 3 people on my side (I had not even spotted, so no clue how they knew) whispered me "we will get the *bliep* for you." And ganked the ganker... and promised me to haunt him for a little while to get even and allow me to finish the quest. I wonder if that ganker got hatetells. He did stop ganking me and I got my skyshard. No idea who the 3 were, but if this sounds familiar to you... thanks ^^

Usually for having the leading kill score in battlegrounds deathmatches. One most recently for killing someone who almost had me thanks to a healer.

Lots. I'm in an old guild that pissed a lot of people off over the years and I wear the very recognizable guild tabard, so I either get insta targeted, or I get hate whispers telling me to do all sorts of interesting things to myself. I usually just respond with "It's always great to meet another fan! ;* "

Plenty. Mostly been accused of: being premade cancer (occasionally true) a no skill sorc (Lol, especially fun when I burst Dk's). Been called trash, a variety of insults, some well thought out, some clearly spat out by a 12 year old who expects everyone to just die for them.

Yes everything from nasty and oddly specific death threats to something as simple as your bad scrub git good and everything in between the funniest thing is when they misspell common or easy words. The ESO community on Xbox One NA is very toxic.

since Battlefield 3 on Xbox 360 I take most hate mail as a badge of honor. You outplayed someone so badly they took a moment of there time to tell you how mad they are at you in a video game lol. no matter how good or bad I did I judged how well I was doing by the amount of hate mail I'd get 2011 was good times

I get the most hate whispers from streamers that can 1vX successfully until I show up. These players usually attach way to much of their self worth to being "unkillable" and when I screw that up they get really pissed and start whispering me about what a scrub I am for "zerging" them down with 2-3 other people (who would have all gotten killed by pissed off streamer if I wasn't there).
