played wow since beta and star wars tor the same...but...eos wants to kill me a lot. Playing a templar...doing quests (level 12 now) and i die trying to kill stuff..."savage of Stonefalls', 'peril at the pools' with kill the capt. Ok...playing consoles are diff but what am i doing wrong? 1h/shield or 2h?

are you magicka or stamina? for magicka ... people usually go either destruction staff/ restoration staff OR dw/resto

Unlike both of those games mentioned, ESO required more active work to reduce the damage one takes. Even melee do not just stand there and kill their opponent. Movement to avoid damage as well as blocking and interrupting are key to survival.

If you are magicka based then light armor has a shield available but 5pc of light must be worn. If stamina you can use Rally from the 2H for a heal and by doing some PvP you can unlock vigor.

Self-healing is vital to survival in ESO.

You said you're a Templar. Are you using magicka as your primary resource pool? If so, you should be using Puncturing Sweeps as your main damaging ability, which heals you for a percent of the damage you do.

typically if you want to use 2h or sword and board you would want to go stamina, with the resources most people stack their attribute points into 1 place , magicka for magicka stamina for stamina ... for example ... i mainly run magicka builds so i put my attributes ( 64 of them ) into magicka

Sounds like you are doing a bit into magicka and a bit into stamina. You're nerfing yourself. You need to choose either all stamina or all magicka. Which one you should choose depends on what race you chose, because some races have racial passives for stamina and some races have passives for magicka. Your stamina pool size increases the damage of your stamina based skills, and your magicka pool increases the damage of your magicka skills, this is why you dont want to do both. each one will be weaker than what it couldve been. When you get to the shrines in your factions capital you can recast your attribute points for a gold cost.
If you decide to go stamina based you can you whatever weapon you like except staff, but there are only certain class skills you can use that will have a stamina morph. Google it.
If you choose magicka that you can only use staffs, but you can use all the class skills.
Some magicka characters could use a weapon in order to use a skill like rally, but its basically a buff bar and they dont actually hit with the weapon. At level 15 you will get a second skill bar.
Im decently new, Ive never made a templar.
Im on Console ps4 north american server if you need someone to quest with.

The easy way out is put all points into magicka, try to wear light armor(and unlock its passives) and just spam Puncturing Sweep(first skill in Aedric Spear tree) on everything. You won't have to do another thing, can 1 button spam through 90% of the game. It's damage, aoe damage and a heal too. Well grab BoL(Breath of Life, first skill in the healing tree) as well, it's a very powerful heal. Use a destro staff and heavy attack with it to restore magicka if you run out of it(lightning staff heavy is the best, restoration works even better for magicka restore but it's less damage).

Do make sure you're wearing level appropriate armor too, say level 18 gear at level 20 is alright but level 8 gear at level 20 will make all your stats drop significantly.

There's a bit more to playing the game than that but this should let you get through all the questing with hardly ever dying at least

Cheaper and better to do it earlier, since the cost of respec increases with the number of points spent.

Hi, khornelord, Code65536 has solid advice. For the level 15 thing you refer to, it is at level 15 that you can finally do weapon swapping—i.e., you can equip another weapon set or weapon and shield on your off hand in the inventory.

The game can be hard at first, because there is so much variety at the beginning in skill choices.

No.

Either 100% magicka or 100% stamina. Never split between the two.

I would suggest going 100% magicka and wearing light armor. Survivability on magicka is easier because Puncturing Sweeps will heal you, your Templar class heals scale off of your magicka pool, and the light armor shield will be very useful once you get that skill unlocked.

don't feel obligated to do all the quests around you - you'll never get anywhere, they don't give out much xp, gold, and only occasionally good gear...

go explore and kill random stuff along the way - you'll collect some gold, pick up gear, collect skyshards and have a blast checking out tamriel...

there are quest givers everywhere - like - everywhere...they'll still be there when you roll through again...

look at your map, find the capitol, follow the roads and discover stuff along the way...

I envy you

These recommendations for your stats aren't taking into account that you are low level, and ALL of your class skills are magicka when they start out. Some will be able to morph to stamina later.

While leveling, it's ok to put points into whatever resource pool you struggle with most. You won't do this at end game, but you can't apply end game logic to a brand new account and character.

Make sure you are wearing pieces of each armor type (light, medium, heavy) while you level. Consider heavy on the chest and legs to help your survivability. Ask in zone chat (and here on the forums) for a good beginners guild on your server and platform that can recommend and help with crafted gear sets, food and potions for leveling.

You will respec when your higher level, and put attribute and skill points only where you need them, don't sweat it too much now.

Edit to add: try to have at least one skill from each class skill line, and at least one from your preferred weapon skill line on your bar at all times when leveling. You'll be very glad later if you do.

all...thats for all the help. as i have understood the game ( a little) i dont die a lot. Now as level 22...keep using mag for skills? no stam or health? and with the weapons...i was using a 2h axe but changing to staff. does it matter fro weapon to weapon?

Anyhow:

Magicka templars have great survivability. Puncturing Sweeps is a big part of that. So is Breath of Life (the other morph is actually better for soloing, but Breath of Life is the more important one to level up for future group play).
The story isn't nearly as good for stamina templars, although Repentance will be great when you eventually get it. (So make sure to level up the Restoring Light skill line.)
As noted above, at any one time you should commit fully to either magicka or stamina. However, it's not totally crazy to for a while make the commitment that's "wrong" for your race.
You just started the game. There would be little harm in making a new character if you choose.

The specs that are probably easiest to play at low levels while you're first learning the game are magicka sorcerer, magicka templar, magicka warden, and stamina warden. Reasons include:

All of those get strong heals early on.
All of those lend themselves well to doing at least some ranged damage.
All except templar have a pet that can help soak up damage.
If you don't choose to use the warden pet, the other two class ultimate skills are very strong. (You unlock your class ultimate skills MUCH earlier than you unlock any others.)

OP, if you go to Menu, Character, you'll see listings for Weapon Damage and Spell Damage. If a skill costs Stamina to use, its damage scales of Weapon Damage and Max Stamina. If it costs Magicka, the damage scales off Spell Damage and Max Magicka.

All staff skills cost Magicka. All skills from non-staff weapons (1H/S, 2H, DW, Bow) cost Stamina. All (non-Ultimage) class skills start out costing Magicka, and a small number of them have Stamina morphs. For Templars, Puncturing Strikes can morph into Biting Jabs, Piercing Javelin can morph to Binding Javelin, and Backlash can morph to Power of the Light.

If you want to fight with one (two after Level 15) of the physical weapons, put all of your attribute points into Stamina, and use skills primarily from the weapon lines, plus class skills with Stamina morphs. You will also slot one or two Magicka class skills, but these will be utility or healing and will not be used for damage, or will just be (mostly) unused on your bar to level that skill line.

If you do as @Magdalina suggested, putting everything into Magicka and using Destruction staff on one bar and Restoration staff on the other, then you can easily get through all of the beginning game. Magicka Templars truly are easy mode with Puncturing Sweeps.

@scipionumatia is not incorrect about Nords, but Stamplar (Stamina Templar since you're new) is much more difficult to play than Magplar.

The racial passives are important for end-game min/max builds, helpful before then. But no min/max build will even touch a Nord. They're usually relegated to tanks due to their passives.

Mmh, I wouldn't suggest this for new players. That's how you get champion-level players who have no idea what they're doing and become the poster child for the dungeon PUG horror stories, except now they don't have battle leveling to help them out.

khornelord, what do you want to do in the game? If you want to DPS, then yeah, a stamina Templar is probably your best choice from a min-max perspective, but you're losing a lot of survivability. Nords aren't great compared to some of the other races for DPS, however, race doesn't matter for 95% of the game's content and especially doesn't matter when you're still learning. A 10% boost to 10k DPS and a 10% boost to 30k DPS are pretty different.

All in all, magplar is a pretty forgiving class while you're learning, in my experience. It's also one of the easiest classes to swap to a heal spec if you want to run a dungeon or something.
