There's a fine line between jokes about "slave Argonians" and "thief Khajiit" and actual racism, hidden in jokes. Also, numerous comments that have been posted here recently were clearly not "roleplaying" or "in-game". The whole topic has been greatly exaggerated lately and needs to stop before it gets out of hand.

It's better that people get racist here against a fictional race than in real life against other people...

Yes, it does matter. There are even people arguing that racism can't be directed towards white people because of a lack of structural power of coloured people. Agreeing to this or not, racism can't be produced over fictional races because there is no power slope in that game.

If you feel deeply offended and discriminated in real life because someone made a comment about argonian leather boots you may should take a step back from gaming. Getting involved in a game to that point it impacts your own life negatively can't be a good thing.

Also, as I mentioned before, there is a fine line that seperates how users deal with fictional lore and introducting real life references to it. The latter is clearly something that should be punished. But as I understand this and yesterdays topic, that is not what it's about.

The discussion is not on whether or not the game contains (or should/shouldn't contain) racism. It's about discussing the in-game, lore-based racism on the forums. If people don't like the fact that racism plays a large part of some in-game cultures in a lore-heavy game, then I can only suggest to pick a different game. If discussions or mentions of some aspects of the lore bothers you, then don't take part in the discussions. Or avoid/ignore them altogether. If you don't like racism being part of your game in any way, shape or form.. then ESO is not for you.

If it's about the game and the games lore and not just being used as a way to mask real racism I see no issues with it.

I often make Dunmer master race, enslave all Argonian etc. jokes but that's not a reflection of me as person in real life and is purely fun based around the game.

This is some major league trolling. Either that, or some video game SJW in a game where slavery and racism are peppered throughout the lore.

I know the difference and of course you can still be a racist yerk even without structural power. That "Some people even arguing" should have made it clear that "pedjudice + power" is not the only way to describe racism. Apologies, that might wasn't obvious.

However, point still stands that I hardly can see what is racism about fictional things that don't even touch real life at all.

Yeah you really should do that. I hope you didn't have to pay for that kind of education, otherwise you got ripped off badly. Just look at the definition of the word "racismn" and you should know that power has nothing to do with it.

Don't worry, I live in a country where eduction doesn't push you deep into debts. Besides, I already commented on that again and still, institutional racism is a thing. Might want to look up what that has to do with power.

Liking or disliking a race in a videogame is not racism.

I'll make all the jokes I want about Argonian skin shoes or a Khajiit fur rug, but at the end of the day none of it really matters, because they are fictional characters in a fictional world.

And if you think that has any bearing on the real world, you must also believe that killing people in a game is tantamount to killing people in real life.

Agreed. I remember reading a while back that a person (or a group of people?) got banned on PS4 for wearing the DB cosmetic robe plus a hood (all dyed white, of course) and then specifically murdering Redguard NPCs. He/they allegedly tried to use roleplaying as a defense, but it was a pretty clear instance of RL racist ideology.

Lore-appropriate jokes about slavery are probably harmless 99% of the time, but if you have a habit of making these jokes over and over again... you might want to re-think that, as it could give others the impression that you're using the game as a cover for RL feelings. That might not be your intention AT ALL, and you might be an extremely tolerant person IRL, but is it really that hard to see why people might start to wonder?

I'd argue that the game itself takes a critical stance against slavery and racial intolerance; I mean, you're clearly not meant to sympathize with the Altmer during that notorious College quest line in Auridon. Relishing in your ability to make jokes about slaves over and over again, and then saying that it's justified "because lore" might be a flawed argument in and of itself.

People are saying it's fake, fictional, and you should just get over it. But it's entirely possible all the race hate is making people concerned on if they even should make an Argonian/khajiit, because they might receive hate for it.

Fictional hate is leaking into real life hate, and apparently that's going over peoples heads.

Same thing can be said for any character.

People call Altmer snooty, Bosmer cannibals, Orcs are poop elves, Nords are drunks, etc etc.

A lot of the time those "insults" are really nothing more than banter, and it helps to respond in kind.

I'll walk into an inn on my Bosmer and ask if anyone wants to fight. When they ask why, I rely "I'm hungry"

Sure it plays into a stereotype of the race I am playing, but it does it in a humorous manner.

Anyways, iI just find it incredibly stupid to worry about the possiblity of someone saying mean things about the character you play in a videogame.

And while we're at it shouldn't ZOS then delete the entire Dark Brotherhood DLC because of their very nasty practice of murdering innocent people, even with added brutal animations so we can really enjoy the moment of the murder. I mean who here hasn't murdered hundreds of innocent and peaceful dockworkers or fishermen in Daggerfall harbour? I guess that has to stop now then...

What about pickpocketing beggars? That is entirely immoral so of course you always avoid pickpocketing beggars as the bastion of morality you so clearly are. Remove the ability to pickpocket beggars I say! It's a very anti-humanist practice to steal from the poor and the weak and it shouldn't be allowed.

The "Racism" you speak of would not be a big deal if racial passives were selectable regardless of race.
