On PC/EU, I'm using the Imperial horse, since that's not my primary server (NA is), so I didn't want to spend any crowns or gold. (I have the base game Imperial Edition, so the horse is cross-server, unlike the one from the Crown Store upgrade, so the horse is "free" for me on EU.)
Here's the funny thing, though: I virtually never see anyone riding around on an Imperial horse. The Imperial Edition base game was discontinued long ago, and most newcomers to the game are probably not going to blow a bunch of crowns on the Imperial upgrade in the Crown Store (particularly since there are so many other things in the CS these days that compete for someone's Crown balance). For the ESO veterans who have the Imperial horse, they've probably amassed quite a collection of mounts by now.
So the Imperial horse, which for me is a "free" mount, is also a pretty unique mount simply because nobody rides it any more these days.

Shame I can't take a group picture of my namesake and all his senche.

The only difference among the various mounts is purely cosmetic.
A more expensive mount is not inherently faster, is not more resilient, and does not allow you to carry more. Such features are gained through individual player character riding skills rather than the mount itself. There are also buffs for mount riders, but it doesn't matter what particular mount you are riding.
I know very well that people who buy more expensive mounts do so for the look alone. They want something different. They want something cooler. I have no problem with that. I'm not trying to tell anybody how to play their game. Whatever makes you happy, more power to you.
In my opinion, I personally see no incentive to spend more gold or spend any crowns on a mount when the cheapest one available is equal to everyone else's fancy mounts. By the way, the Imperial Edition comes with a mount included and it's also equal in function.

The only thing I could think of when reading that was...SheepdogPaladin wrote: »One Mount To Rule Them All
