Is it even a game anymore

Been playing on and off since release, yesterday I played for 6 hours straight then wondered wtf am I doing here, this is like unpaid work, no fun at all just mind numbing crap that I somehow believe needs to be done.

Is it even a game after so long or are we just hooked to whatever tactics they do to make you need stuff?

You played for 6 hours straight for a reason.. you're hooked.

I personally think ESO sucks now, it's more of a social thing for me. Talk to guildies or help someone with this or that.

Hopefully it gets turned around and becomes fun again. After all I've paid..

    They're not wrong though.

If you lose interest after playing for 6 hours, try shorter sessions.

If you have generally lost interest take a break for a while.

For me eso is a game and should be fun. If I find myself not having fun I do something else for a while. I've been playing since launch and have had a couple of month long breaks. I always come back though.

I don't necessarily enjoy the grind, but it's a part of the game in willing to deal with.

There is a lot to do in this game, so it's really up to you to find out what you will enjoy doing.

I played pretty much battlegrounds and nothing else for 3 weeks, and when I got bored of that I spent some time doing thieves guild. After that I purchased a house I had my eye on and decorated that. Now clockwork city had come out, so I've run though that. Tomorrow I'm going to give the new trial a go and jump back on my warden to get him levelled.

Point is, it doesn't have to be a grind if you don't want it to. Plenty of things to do to spice up your gameplay experience

I still haven't done Thieves or Assassin's stuff.

None of my too many characters are maxed on their horses.

I like to fish, and I'm collecting branches ('cause how could I not get totally inspired to redecorate the house of "Broken Branch Toothmaul")

Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

Does it really not have to be a grind? That’s what I’m wondering, are we playing a game or doing something because we are hooked, you know.

When I play 6 ... err 10 ... well maybe sometimes 12 including breaks ... hours a day, it's with a group of friends on Skype.

Of course now that I say that... it's not much more healthy, is it?

I tried fishing and got annoyed and bored.

As far as housegoals, I have a decorated Mathiisen Manor, but I was never able to get it looking right because of the item cap. Either the garden or the inside just looked too sparse.
Ended up buying Domus Phracticus and doing it up. Looks pretty good if I do say so myself.

    It is a personal thing.

Most that play a long time, not off an on, have found a good group of people to play with, maybe more than one group. That is half of what an MMO is about.

Okay there are times when I get stuck doing chores.
I'll do my writs, oh a survey I should pick that up, while I am out lets find this treasure map, oh i should do that daily to level my undaunted, whille I am in the capital I should pick up the rest of the dailies.. *easily defeats the delve and public dungeon bosses then spams heals at dolemns for credit*

What the hell am I doing! I am not even enjoying the game, these are chores.

Other times I get time to just relax and quest about at my own speed enjoying the environment. Or someone needs help with a dungeon recently I have been signing up to do Trails for new experiences. There is still plenty to enjoy just got to get over feeling like you have to complete all the busy work... you can just skip writs or pleadges for a day or week just so you go back to enjoying the game and you'll be fine.

Depends how you play it of course. If you treat the game like a list of chores, then no it's not really a game. But if you stick your middle finger up to those chores and do what you wanna do, regardless of the reward, then in my experience you will enjoy the game more. Basically going semi-casual can work wonders. But then again I play with my wife every day so it's easy for me to have fun even picking mushrooms...

It doesn't have to be a grind at all, i don't - bar writs.

If i hadn't played the game for a while and had the luxury of a 6hr session id just do all the fun stuff i want to do.

People grind / power level / farm then moan the game is dull.

Hmmmm... does an MMO have to be a grind? Sounds like a contradiction... aren't almost all MMOs about grinding for one thing or another? Perhaps OP an MMO isn't for you then.

For me... when I play on my days off, they still tend to be 10+ hours each day. What do I do? Sometimes I spend hours farming mats to earn gold for whatever new set or concept build I'd like to try. Sometimes it's leveling new alts, or seeking Skyshards and Lorebooks, etc. I still haven't finished Orsinium, TG, DB, Morrowind or any other DLC, and yet I still find time to spend 10+ hours each day I play doing something.

I play it exactly like any other RPG. I am questing for the most part. And it does not feel like work at all.
Sure I can run dungeons, do trials, do crafting writs, farm plunder skulls, but I don't have to. So I only do what I feel like doing.

If you feel like it's a job, stop playing.

How have you not realised it yet.

    ESO is a life style.

Once you have forsaken all others, ditched your job, set up camp in mom's basement, spent 4k on a rig, ground out AR50 and no lifed emp, sweated out the same dull trial for 6 months for gear that's now out of date, suffered your class being destroyed with pointless changes...

Then you will be one of us and possibly enjoy that gap closed induced loading for 15 mins.

Keep at it. Soon you will be one of us.

I took a break last year because I was playing for the sake of playing and not actually having fun, came back with a fresh approach of "enjoy it for what it is" and have had a blast since.

ESO isn't perfect, hell there is a lot which bugs me and a lot of potential which isn't being used, but... it's not terrible. The grass is always greener and I learnt that when I took a break and tried some other things. ESO with its flaws is still better than a lot of other games (personal opinion) and that's why I came back and now remain.

OP if you're not having fun and have no goals, take a break for a week or two, try some single player games or something else entirely. Rest up and come back when it doesn't feel like you're forcing yourself to play.

Well, if playing the game in your free time feels like upaid work for you then you should quit and find something you have fun doing in your free time - its as simple as that
Take a break, Assassins Creed Origins is around the corner, and come back in a couple of weeks and see if it feels the same, if so its time to move on and if you are back having fun - stick around...

If you don't find any joy in the game I suggest switching up what you do. I was a hardcore pveer up until Morrowind early access. I turned all my characters to pvp and went nuts in Cyrodiil for months. I stepped back into pve for the first time this very week and it's fun again.

games - all games these days make money off mindless progression- i.e. grinding.

i saw my nephew playing warframe, mindlessly going around in circles for four hours killing the same thing- and thought- *** games when i was yougn were not like that at all. but then again- eso is EXACTLY like that. the thing that killed it is free to play- pay to win and pay to progress microtransactions. ever since this model came in- and became popuilar - initially with mobile phones, all games have been built around it- which is- to create a sense of progress, satisfyingly so- then suddenly impede that prgoress or make it inconvenient (e.g craft bag, player slots, etc) so that ur hooked and have to play it like its a rat race. i say step outside it- play as u want, do the content u want to, and dont feel obliged to 'progress', most of all

    - if ur checking ur watch that u have to do ur writs- or putting of having breakfast to feed ur virtual horse, its time to take a couple days break u ll enjoy the game much more after u do.
