I finally started playing Witcher 3 which has been sitting on my shelf since it was released. It is a far superior game, except for combat which is a bit limiting. Where Witcher 3 gets it right is in the story telling. Every quest, contract etc., no matter how big or small has the absolute best story behind it. Oh, and the environments blows ESO out of the water! I'll come back to ESO when I'm done, but I think I'll still be disappointed with it.
The Witcher 3 is also a single-player game. You can't compare the two. Of course a AAA single player title is going to have superiority in single player activities. Not sure what the point of this post was.

Seriously, its about learning how to play MMO's. Most people won't (and don't) get this - but moder game developers simply can not produce enough content to keep the playerbase busy without adding a significant amount of 'grind' - but what do I mean by Grind?
Well, I'm talking about some kind of incentive to repeat the same content over and over to beat RNG/accumulate more gold/XP/AP/skillpoints, whatever.. I mean how many people log in and the first thing they do is all their crafting writs? That is most definitely NOT fun.
Games HAVE to be fun - and once you start playing in a way that is no longer fun, then you need to find a different way of playing, ie. You have to LEARN TO PLAY in a way that you get enjoyment out of playing - and not get sucked into this whole MMO idea of dangling a carrot to convince people that they have to do a bunch of dull, repetitive tasks to get a bite.
Ignore the carrot and just do what you enjoy.

Another thing they should be doing is death penalties like XP loss. You have no idea how much that slowed people down back in games like EQ. You had consider what you were doing. It kept stuff in check. Now it's just log in blitz blitz blitz boom max level. Next day everything is run and finished. It's way to easy.

I agree, but it also drove some players away, and would do so many multiples over today. You mention EQ, can you imagine the furor on a modern MMORPG forum like this one if someone actually lost a level when they died? Not to mention the number of tickets ZOS would receive!
While I'm not remotely suggesting that this applies to everyone, we all know that a certain game introduced the "I want it all and I want it NOW!" crowd to MMORPGs, and they simply wouldn't tolerate what you're asking for, they want as you say to "log in blitz blitz blitz boom max level" and even then they would complain about the lack of content! Or, mind-numbingly, that it's all too much of a grind and can it be simplified please so one character does it and all their other characters are credited with doing it too!
I think the main problems today are that people want to focus on achievement rather than enjoyment, they want to play the way other people on You Tube tell them to rather than they way they enjoy, and they want to "beat" or "complete" a game in weeks or months rather than play it for years.

God I miss the original core game of Everquest. The mechanics of the game facilitated roles( support, heals, tanking, dps) and grouping. Yet you could solo especially if buffed up. The challenges of losing levels or corpse runs for your items before they decay. Unique use abilities like summoning a corpse with a Necromancer. Trains...omg they could be horrible and some monks were renown for it.
Been playing on and off since release, yesterday I played for 6 hours straight then wondered wtf am I doing here, this is like unpaid work, no fun at all just mind numbing crap that I somehow believe needs to be done.
Is it even a game after so long or are we just hooked to whatever tactics they do to make you need stuff?

Well to a point you're right. However they can make content harder. Yes it's a balance, but look at WoW when it came out. Yes people could sit down and blitz and level quick, but nothing like now.
Then the "end game" dungeon content at launch of that game was not easy. Strat and Scholomance runs, if you tried to 5 man it were like 5 hour affairs. Yes that's to long, but better than then 30 minute tops you get now. Even when you first enter a dungeon and are under geared. If people aren't being dumb you can clear any of these dungeons in 40 minutes max.

There is a lot to do in this game, so it's really up to you to find out what you will enjoy doing.
I played pretty much battlegrounds and nothing else for 3 weeks, and when I got bored of that I spent some time doing thieves guild. After that I purchased a house I had my eye on and decorated that. Now clockwork city had come out, so I've run though that. Tomorrow I'm going to give the new trial a go and jump back on my warden to get him levelled.
Point is, it doesn't have to be a grind if you don't want it to. Plenty of things to do to spice up your gameplay experience
Does it really not have to be a grind? That’s what I’m wondering, are we playing a game or doing something because we are hooked, you know.

If you don't like what you're doing go play something else?
