I prefer dedicated characters for roles. No gear swapping, no skill resets, no cp resets, and they can all do daily writs, missions, bounties, etc.

Just because of the different skills and passives. Classes play and feel different, and having one of each means you can experience the whole package.

I don’t, I just respec my main toon so I can play differently and use different gears.
My main is 9 trait crafter and learnt all styles and have 320 skill points, can’t stand playing a new toon that is inferior.

i enjoy playing all the classes, theyre all different and i wanted to be proficient at each of them. ive levelled 7/10 classes- and done vMA with 6/10 of them. finding levelling the warden boring this time of all the classes.
plus as someone said if you do writs with each of the classes u make a lot more money with little more work- and when it ccomes to farming motifs- like doing dailies- do your round with one toon, then switch toons and do it again- and again- and you can easily farm a motif in a couple days that way- as opposed to like weeks and months.
but most of all- playing all the classes- theyre all differnet in their own way and enjoyable in their own way- feels good when yoiu understand the keys to each class. i only wish some achivements were account wide- like trials and so on- i get it- u need to do it with each toon to count, but questing and those kind of achievements, wish carried over.

Some classes are a little stronger at specific roles than others. Dk-tank and Templar heals to make a couple.

Some play the game enough they want a little variety which is perfectly ok.

Even in WoW players do alts for variety and those that heal or tank exclusively will often have multiple classes leveled for the same variety.

    1) Crafting writs. I earn around ~500k gold per week with those quests and hireling mails and I always have enough gold tempers to improve my armor/weapons.
Of course, only one of those alts has 9 traits and (almost) all styles, but it doesnt matter for writs.
    2) I like testing different builds. Yes, all classes can technically play all roles, but not all roles are optimal for them. I prefer veteran content so thats important for me.
    3) Fashion! Dress-up simulator is an important part of any RPG for me. :)
    4) Immersion (yeah lol). My main is a templar healer, and I just dont want to do DB/TG quests on that character. Even in single-player TES games I make different characters for different questlines.
    6) I dont want to be restricted to one class. Templar is fun, of course, but I wanna try something else once in a while.
    7) Because I can.

I play multiple characters across two accounts. They don't have "roles" as I play solo or, in the case of e.g. dolmens, world bosses and delves, cooperatively. Playing different characters keeps the game fresh compared with just logging in one character the whole time which always seems more like a chore to me. All the characters are different, and I enjoy playing them.

You might be able to re-spec everything else but you can't re-spec your class. I used to hate playing a NightBlade. Hated it with a passion. I decided to try again and now I love it. Now I'm getting ready to see if I can find some love for a Sorc. I'm not sure I will, but I'm going to try. And after I do that, I'm going to try the Warden. I couldn't do any of that if I didn't have alts because in ESO, you can't change your class once you've chosen one.

So I take it the OP will not be playing the game for very long. We role multiple characters so we can keep playing the game, trying out different things, without getting bored.

There are multiple combinations for characters and you use different races for each - magblades, stamblades, magsorcs, stamsorcs, stamDKs, MagDKs, magplars, stamplars. Then along came Wardens and people want to try them out in both magicka and stamina versions.

They all have pros and cons and some of us would prefer to find out from playing each rather than finding 'the best tank/healer/DPS build' on the internet and just using that. It's all part of enjoying the game.

I first leveled alts before One Tamriel was a thing. I had Varanis Arano, who became the Vestige and a hero of the Ebonheart Pact alongside her Argonian husband (Dunmer MagDK). I had Maria Montclair, my blackhearted thief and assasin who nontheless answered the Covenant's call to save her native Rivenspire from the vampire scourge (Breton StamSorc). My Dominion character, Elrin Naarifin helped forge the Dominion (Altmer MagSorc). Sure, Varanis helped out with the Dominion questlines in Cadwell's Gold, but my actual hero of the Dominion was Elrin Naarifin.

With One Tamriel. any character can do any content. Those three characters leveled up in their zones, in their alliances, and were shaped by those stories. My newer characters do the zones that fit into their stories.

As for why I have alts? Both Varanis and Maria have maxed crafting. Varanis is my tank, my crafter, my PVP healer, and my main character. Maria is my DPS and my farmer. Maria is a stamina character, so she can run therefore farming much more efficiently than Varanis. They have totally different playstyles that I enjoy playing both of them.

I've got other characters. There's Akaviria, my Imperial daedra-summoning, necromancing, Legion Zero Stam Sorc who's really a DPS but can tank when needed to make dungeons go faster and who's built to melt mobs with AoEs. There's Nerevara Almalexia, my Dunmer warden who's leveling in Morrowind with no CP for an extra challenge.

This is a long way of saying that I have alts because I have characters with stories that are interesting enough to be played. There are times I'll make an alt to try out a class or because I need a toon to fill a certain role, but mostly I do it to enjoy playing those characters and their stories.

I made all my alts for completions sake, and as testbed characters for diverse builds, see how they work, have every race tried out, etc. And since I dislike doing things by half, I also level all of them... though I take my time about it, so that ESO won't get boring for me!

Of course, when I started the game I didn't know aboput cadwells, so I made the very first two alts to take a peek at the other alliances storylines... one of those even grew into a character I actually RP with!

But yeah, all the dailies also have a chance of getting motiv pages as reward, so the more dailies one could do on different alts, the more chances. One good reason.

Besides my main which sees 99% of my play time, I have one of each of the 4 other classes that I play occasionally in PvP to keep it interesting, re-speccing each stam/mag on whims.

I also have 1 extra in each enemy faction mostly to bomb zergs of my own faction in IC when necessary.

While I think I will always prefer to play DK's, I am leveling/have leveled many other classes, both stam and mag. I think it is hard to say what one may prefer to play unless you have explored multiple options. My stamblade will be used only for thievery related activities, perhaps writs and stuff at a later time. I have a dedicated healer and a dedicated tank that are in the works as well. Using multiple characters to do things such as writs and other random dailies increases your odds at receiving those extra special rewards (master writs and motif pages for example).

For completions sake, I only care about one character, the rest it doesn't matter what all they have done or have yet to do. The goal is to spend time playing with a specific idea and decide what I could possibly enjoy or what sort of a purpose this character will have if I keep it. With the final result being all characters remaining being completed, correct, and useful in some fashion.

Besides, I get bored. Having so many choices on things to do, or things that need to be done, keeps me busy.

Yeah I have nine, it's just so much easier to jump on a character and it's good to go for a certain role rather than have to change gear or respec.

    Have:

    Stam Sorc Tank - Crafter.

    Stam DK- PVE DPS

Templar - PVP, use this guy when soloing

2nd Templar - PVE DPS but mostly a dust collector.

Warden PVP - my small group play guy, offers a lot of support and more survivability than the templar but takes longer to kill stuff

Warden Healer - my good to go pve healer.

    Stam NB - PVP Ganking

Mag NB - My ready to go character for carrying people through sky reach.

Mag Sorc - PVE DPS & my go to for VMA.

But correct me if I am wrong , with the exception of high end PVE stuff like vet trails, all classes can perform any of the 3 roles efficiently in ESO.

Also ESO’s leveling is more story oriented than others as such once you experience the story/lore/content you do not need to do the same quest again.

So why folks level multiple alts ?

Not every class can perform each role as well as others.

Examples - want great trial dps? Go magsorc.
    Want PvP easymode? Go Magsorc
Want a great PvE/PvP support build? Go magsorc.

Alts are for people who like to figure things out for themselves. You can just listen to someone on YT tell you Templars make the best healers or you can try healing with all 5 classes and see it for yourself.

I can't imagine playing an MMO and not trying out all the specs of all the classes. And a game like ESO, where slightly different combinations of skills and gears let you create your own different builds, has a lot of replay value for people like us.

Altoholics are the true MMO fans... everyone else is just a poser :)

I have 14 characters because when balance patches happens. Usually they completely change the META. Also because racial passives are OP AF.

Imagine being a nord trying to deal magicka damage. Or imagine having a high elf trying to deal stamina damage or tank. That's why I have all these characters. So no matter where ZOS decide to go with is extreme changes in balance. I will not be left behind like I was in my first year of playing this game.

I am not a fan of the One Character To Rule Them All. I actually prefer that example from WoW, where not every class and not every race is good at every thing. In a Role Playing Game, like ESO, one should not be able to do everything, and take every option, explore every corner, do every quest, join every organization, all with a single character. Make a decision and live with it, says I. Decisions are important.

So, it isn't as important to have alts of every variety anymore. I started out doing that, but now I do alts primarily to do the different stories and achievements again.

I have an account that does not have easy access to all the riches and benefits of my main account. No ESO Plus. No crafting bag. No millions of gold in the bank, tons of mats, or expert crafters. It is fun doing all again, like a new player.

I have more characters below level 50 than above level 50. It is far more interesting to level up to 50 than it is to play at level 50. I look forward to the level boost, and Champion Rank just does not cut it. One Tamriel sort of blunted this, as there really is not a lot of danger in the world anymore, but that just means that I have more to do as I level my characters.

Have 3 cp characters, mag sorc who is old main, templar alt I created back then sorcerer got nerfed hard and could not heal anymore, warden because of Morrowind, healer, might be changed later.
Created an NB and DK back during the anniversary as I wanted more characters for crafting writs, do horse training and trait research on them. Killed off my old bank alt except an templar who looked good, created an extra sorcerer and an NB.
Last 3 is mostly bank alts who feed horses :)
Grinding just make you go in circles.
