I run Sword and Shield on my main dps bar, and with self-buffs and the BSW proc, my Spell Power hits 3.2k, all purple gear. My back bar is a Shock Staff, and I lose 298 Spell power because I lose the Juliano's proc once I lose the shield, but this bar has the Ele Drain, Igneous Weapons, and such so I really don't lose any dps minus Elemental Blockade, but a 2.9k SP blockade vs a 3.2k SP blockade is very negligible, lol.
You will definitely get a little more Spell Power with Rattlecage, but what you lose is far more valuable. Light Armor gives you such an advantage in PvE play. If you go heavy, you will notice a HUGE difference, as your dps will actually drop.
Good luck on the build though, and don't let the forums fool you... try it for yourself. The fun in an MMO is learning as you go and sharing the cool stuff... good or bad, cool is still cool, lol.

Does seem like a good build for a mix of Tank / DPS I did try to find a viable DPS Tank but most builds i found were outdated so i gave up on that and went back to full DPS instead.
I ended up settling for the Alcast MagDK build as recommended by @Asardes but with a couple things changed around to suite my play style.
I'm not fully golden for gear and enchants yet but my spell power works out at 6.7K and as long as i dont get lazy and remember to keep spell shield up i seem to survive pretty well while keeping the damage up.
The things i did different:
Infused Lightening Staff restore magicka enchant
Dampen Magic instead of Harness as i get a bigger shield (though i'm considering swapping back to Harness for sustain purposes).
Also @Asardes whats your stance on Vamp? I tried running with and without and the increase to regen seems to be minimal, or at least not big enough to warrant the extra fire damage taken anyway.
WillhelmBlack wrote: »Cybercore_Death wrote: »This is why i've put it to the forums.
I did the math and the raw spell damage and crit adds up.
Any reason that Rattlecage is a waste, from your own experience?
I play PvP almost exclusively but I'll put it this way, I'm moving from Rattlecage and Desert Rose to Shacklebreaker and Lich AND Willpower because in the end I'll have more of EVERYTHING. 3000 regen, 3000 spell damage, 40k Magicka, 25k Health and 15k Stamina. Seems unbelievable but the gold mats are all bought and the build will be ready by tomorrow.

The grind for these staves alone, makes this a futile endeavor. I've run VoM hundreds of times (easily one of my favorite dungeons) and have never had an inferno staff drop. I could put together dozens of armor sets, but alas, no inferno staves.
Farming armor is easy. I've never had problems procuring enough divines pieces for a build, even just running the pledges. And I've shared or deconned many pieces with ideal traits in the process. Most people I've heard of farming dungeons for months were after weapons which have a much smaller chance of dropping since they are mixed in with jewelry and only drop reliably from the end boss. For CoA specifically I have not one but two complete BSW armor sets (7p), one in divines the other in impenetrable, a generic jewelry set and two inferno staves, one precise the other charged. I also kept a full Sunderflame set from the same dungeon, less chest, but including a sharp dagger, sharp axe and precise axe. I will probably retrait them next patch. I have 4 characters that just keep gear, all of it in ideal traits, obtained mostly by running the pledges so, with a few exceptions, I'm prepared to do pretty much any META build. The only gear that I'm missing is TFS from VO since people ran that trial rarely and oddly I've only gotten VO/IA/Yokeda from there when I ran it, as well as the vMoL and vHoF sets because I've never completed those trials. Also missing Master bow since I didn't run vDSA that much. I'm currently just doing vMA since I left that one wait for a long time. When I come back to group play I will join guilds to complete the remaining ones. As a general rule I only run veteran content finding normal to be boring; I sometimes run normal dungeons solo with chars to get used to chars before I bring them to vMA.

I find the RNG in this game quite curious. I myself have never had much luck with it in general. My BSW woes being a good example. Seems to happen when trying to farm other sets as well including overland ones. I struggle to get the drops i need and either have to resort to buying them or just looking for an alternate set to bridge the gap. Hence going for Silks of The Sun for my MagDK instead of BSW this time around.
Yet, like yourself, i've read and spoke to people who have no issues with the drop rates. Spoke to a guy not so long back about his StamSorc build as he melted bosses in Vet Dungeons with it and he was saying he did a run on a trial and got all 5 VO pieces in 1 run, including 2 sharp daggers. Yet i cant seem to get a break lol

Well I pretty much ran all pledges daily from about November 2015 to March 2017. Dungeon sets only came about in October 2016 with One Tamriel. So still about 4-5 months of daily pledges, sometimes on multiple characters. They didn't like fall out of the sky in my bank. I've made lots of money from the tempers recovered by deconning the trash traits

Have you gotten the passive Metal Extraction / Unraveling / Wood Extraction? That improves not only the chance of getting tempers trough refining, but also getting tempers, trait and style stones when deconstructing gear. Ex.Maximizes the chances of extracting Woodworking ingredients and allows the refining of the most powerful resins from raw materials.
I get the temper back ~60% of the time. And that's not just RNG since it seems to be pretty constant.

Damn 60% of the time? I've had the Max passives for over a two years and never seen that high of a return in any given sitting.

Edit: just realized you didn't mean tempering alloy, just tempers in general.
Id say it's higher than 60% then if you are counting any quality.

I think it's the same for all tempers for deconstructing. Only when refining does it decreases with the quality of the temper. On average a stack of raw material produces about one gold temper when refined. Actually I think most of those I have come from daily crafting writs, not refining.

In all honestly i'm expecting as much. I spent over 6 months grinding CoA1 for the lats piece of BSW i needed and never got it so raged, changed to a StamDK and destroyed all the gear i had..... second time i've done that lol but i've learnt my lesson now at least.
If i do ever manage to get the theorycraft together i'll share some results, however i anticipate a long wait ahead...

On the bright side, with the ability to re-trait on the horizon, maybe this will be more doable. Guess it's time to start grinding again to see about getting a couple of inferno/lightning staves.

Same with making gold. I struggle on that front because the stuff I sell that's "desirable" or "high value" doesn't seem to shift when I list em on guild stores. I make enough but wouldn't mind a little more lol

Some people have all the luck haha
I dont even get that many tempers from deconstructing.... RNGesus is not my friend for some reason
Wtb your luck
Edit: just realized you didn't mean tempering alloy, just tempers in general.
Id say it's higher than 60% then if you are counting any quality.
I think it's the same for all tempers for deconstructing. Only when refining does it decreases with the quality of the temper. On average a stack of raw material produces about one gold temper when refined. Actually I think most of those I have come from daily crafting writs, not refining.
I've had those passives for over a year and I can hand on heart say my return is way less than 60% for them. I would love it to be higher. Wouldn't cost me as much for upgrading gear then lol
Same with making gold. I struggle on that front because the stuff I sell that's "desirable" or "high value" doesn't seem to shift when I list em on guild stores. I make enough but wouldn't mind a little more lol
To be honest, with a single notable exception, I've never farmed gold or stuff to sell ever in this game; I almost exclusively sell the surplus. The only financial pressure I've felt was in the first 5-6 months of playing because I needed to fully upgrade the bank and the inventory of my 4 oldest characters but after that it just kept piling; I've upgraded another 10 characters backpack & riding skills - still training the latest 5 but the money have been set aside already. I hardly need to buy anything and I just end up selling all those surplus green/blue/purple tempers I get from trash gear. The only major purchases I've made were the missing motifs before Homestead so I can max out the chance of getting master writs. Those were around ~2.8M, but I've recouped the sum right after the patch when I farmed Mazzatun and Silken Ring pages until I completed them; I've also ended up selling a lot of already learned ones too, and that was the exception I was talking about. With up to 9 vet HM vRoM/vCoS runs a day I was selling close to 1M a week but I got bored and stopped doing it shortly after I completed my books. By that time I had probably made 4-5M and the prices were tapering off. It's not really profitable to spend ~20-25m in the same dungeon for a motif that sells for 30K instead of 60K+. Now it's probably way less since they put it in Crown Store.
Since I have the craft bag I don't even bother selling mats until the 2nd stack forms and I've dropped 2/4 trade guilds since I don't need that many slots anymore - I was selling in smaller stacks, usually 50 to keep the bank from choking. I've never sold any gold ones, due to the fact you need 8 for a 100% upgrade chance, but not bought any. I rarely upgrade gear to gold, only when I'm convinced it's the ideal trait and it's a good set. One of the things that keeps me in a positive trend in the long run is simply not wasting stuff; tempers and other mats just pile up faster than I use them up from hirelings, daily crafting writs and refining, especially when I make the time to collect the surveys. I really don't understand how people struggle with making money. In almost every game I play I end up with more gold and other stuff than I can ever use by simply doing similar things. As for making money on guild stores you don't really need to sell expensive stuff. Just list them at MM price -5% and they will sell quite fast. In fact on some guild stores I ended up selling hundreds of items a week just by listing low value but desirable stuff like intricate woodworking/blacksmithing/clothier items and white/green glyphs from overland/dungeon drops and daily craft writs. With fewer guilds and new chars I don't sell the glyphs anymore, but decon them to level enchanting on the lowbies. I now mostly sell crafted stuff: gold glyphs, potions, foods, consumables in general have a pretty high added value and sell fast on guild stores. For example I've sold a stack Essence of Spell Power pots for 17K and 4 legendary Truly Superb Glyph of Stamina on a guild store for 4.5K gold each on a guild store yesterday. The margin those vs. selling the mats separately is 10-15%. People will just buy them fast, rather than craft themselves.
2H is bad for sustained DPS. The only thing it's good at is survivability and burst damage, but that build works almost on any class with few changes.
I run 5/4 VO w Maelstrom backbar 5 Hunding 1 Velidreth. Ideally it would be 5 VO 5 Hunding Asylum 2H / Maelstrom bow but I didn't have time to farm that yet.
Skills:
Reverse Slice | Venom Claw | Brawler | Rally | Camouflaged Hunter || Flawless Dawnbreaker
Poison Injection | Endless Hail | Rearming Trap | Resolving Vigor | Molten Armaments || Corrosive Armor
Rotation is basically all 3 DPS backbar skills with LA in between and HA into venom claw HA into Brawler 2x then repeat. In execute replace brawler with reverse slice.
Sunderflame is good for group play but it doesn't really fit with 2H. Ideally you should run 2 daggers on front bar, and 3 jewels or armor pieces from another set such as Hunding, VO etc. with a monster set. VO is ideal for solo because it helps you sustain.
Better run 5 Spriggans on body and 5 Hunding's (front bar daggers) w Velidreth or Spawn of Mephala. Selene isn't that good on DK.
Selene is pure single target and does physical damage whilst DK has more synergies with poison damage. Also the 1p bonus doesn't favor a heavy attack build, because those scale mostly on weapon damage, which Velidreth has. Also Mephala has 1p maximum stamina but at least you can have it constantly proc, it snares, and deals damage to multiple enemies. So Selene would be better on Stam Sorc (can proc Implosion), Stam Templar (PotL scales purely on maximum stamina). Not that there's much difference between those 3, 0.5% DPS. Just do vMA with whatever class suits you and get that bow, because that will add 2x what any monster set adds to your DPS.
