Still, Mag DK is probably easier in vMA than stam DK since it has 2 readily available self heals and shield. Don't rush to swap on stamina because someone said so. Unless you plan on running trials for score Mag DK will be fine after the patch too. For solo and casual trial runs doesn't really make any difference. You'll just have to do an extra HA in your rotation and that's about it.

I've not done a lot of DPS parses since I played mostly tank till about Horns of the Reach patch, but I'd say my Magicka Sorcerer is the most reliable in general, with a simple rotation. I don't try to hit the absolute maximum, but rather to find a build that works reasonably well in most content, and mastering that, to improve upon it. I've pretty much standardized the bars on all characters by placing similar range/damage skills on the same spots. The most morph changes, as well as significant gear, skill and rotation changes were on the Magicka Templar. I've abandoned melee due to poor performance in Maelstrom, went full ranged and never looked back. On all my characters I transition seamlessly from DD to support roles, by simply changing gear and mundus.
