What are the most/least Server Intensive Skills? How are they Handled?

I'm curious, as I recently started learning some networking (very, very basic). And would love some insight into how this is handled in a live environment.

    Im going to try and lay this out as basically as i can. This is by no means a detailed take on what is happening but essentially its the rudimentary backend that is taking place.

    everything you do happens in this order:

    client command (you pressed a button)
    >this button press happens on your end immediately, but that command needs to be sent to the first network hop
    >your connection speed and the time it takes for information to travel through multiple network hops is considered "latency"

    server receives client command
    >once ZOS' servers finally get your client command, it then issues it to all the clients in the vicinity of your player character.
    >this will need to travel through all of their network hops to reach them as well

    the server has to calculate where you fired off your command, who you fired it off to, all of your buffs, all of the opponents buffs, their resistances, CP every single thing i nthe game nees to be accounted for on the network. even line of sight, if a tree is in the way, the server calculations tell the client their fireball cant go through and the opponent can no longer be targeted.

    its all 1's and 0's and all that information travels over the network at blinding speeds.

    id say the most server intensive skills are GBAoEs as they affect many clients all needing individual server calculations and consequence delivery.

    I lag right before a large encounter. every time. I know there are 8+ players near by when my game lags the way it does. Thats the server transmitting that other groups CP, buffs etc to my client. Notice how sometimes you lag right before you die? thats because you were dead before you saw you were dead and your client catching up to the server activity which may be delayed by death recount information being transmitted.

    ESO's beautiful detail is also its achilles heel. every single thing needs to be calculated. its why they took the deer out. Rich and Brian already stated that what happens down at nikel will affect a group at kingscrest because all actions on the campaign(server) affects all clients on that campaign.

    I'd probably shy away from describing it as a purely network intensive, but generally speaking, any skill that hits multiple targets in an area over a long period of time and/or has extensive LoS checking will probably be more server intensive.

    BoL, EOTS, healing springs, meteor, negate, etc. The sheer number of calculations that the game goes through to figure out where players are, where effects are, and what affects who, would probably surprise even me.
