I play male characters because I'm male IRL. I don't enjoy games that force gender specific classes. I have nothing against players that like to play cross gender, it just doesn't work for me.
Neither, I play whichever gender suits my concept more.
My two main characters are twin siblings, brother and sister.

I think I prefer to play female characters, presumably because I'm female. My first character in a game is usually female and my main is almost always female.
But I rarely have just 1 character in a game. I've got 6 (not counting mules) in ESO and they're split evenly - 3 male, 3 female. I didn't really plan that, I pick whichever sex seems right for the character I have in mind, but that's how it's worked out so far.
I have an old woman that's got to be the rarest type.
I think it probably is. I have 2 older male characters - neither would appreciate being called old, but ones an imperial in his mid-50s and ones a dark elf who is over 700 years old so I think it's safe to say they're both older than the typical adventurer. But all my female characters are relatively young because that fit the backstories I had in mind for them best.

i find myself roleplaying extremely lesbian female characters in games nowadays; the only reason i can give you is the "i want to play games to be something that i'm not" shtick
i also recently played life is strange, which gave me a strange obsession with female protaganists

I am a male and all my characters are male as well. I once played RPG as a female character and I got ashamed of how many people thought I was an actual girl. Never again.
When I play games I prefer self immersion.. I want to imagine the character I'm playing is me so i try and make all my characters look as much like me as possible...including the sex.
Both. Though have a couple more male than female at present.
Have no problem playing against my gender - used to it from all the solo rpgs I've played where you don't always get a choice.
That said, I do like my boys to be pretty. (Shallow? Possibly )My altmer sorc has lovely golden tats, my nord is a bit like Eomer & my redguard is damn fine. My Breton mage seems to have taken on a life of his own & is now a tad camp, but hey, that's fine too.
My females are all rather fierce & formidable. Don't really do cute.
I'm a female and I have seven characters; six female, one male. I like all of them and will probably make another male, but I think I tend to make females more bc I'm one, and I like playing really badass female characters.
I play as a girl because I am one, although I have thought about making a male character purely for the septum piercing (I think I'd get bored of him and give up after level 10 so I didn't)
What I've found is that females ALWAYAS play female characters, they virtually never choose a male.
Males mix it up, some all female characters, some all male and some play a mix male and female characters (me).
Conclusion: guys are more "adventurous" than girls (vast majority who never choose a male character).
Edit: this is from the females I've met in game - guilds etc. Over 20 I'd estimate and not 1 of them had male characters although some in this thread do (which goes against what I'm saying).

All my characters are male. The idea of playing female characters is not appealing to me, first and foremost because I am male.

I play all females because if im gonna be staring at the backside of a character for 2-10 hours a day I'd rather it not be the overly roid ripped arse crack of some nord orc or mer dude
I'm male, I play both... I tend think of characters more as vehicles rather then strict reflections of myself. Sometimes you want a big sturdy truck, other times you want something fast, light and agile. Currently, 7 females and 5 males... sadly, only 2 have tails.
BTW, I got the "vehicle analogy" from my wife years ago, I let her play one of my characters on SWTOR and after a few minutes and questions, she said she felt like someone gave her the keys to a Ferrari and was deathly afraid "wreak it". I said it was more like a clapped out Datsun, repairs where cheep, drop the clutch, smoke the tires and don't spare the paint!
I'm of the female persuasion so I always play as a young woman/elf because I'm neither young nor elf and character creation is more than a little wish fulfilment, at least for me. I do have a stern, grandfatherly Dunmer because I just could not make a female Dunmer I liked the look of. Would it be so awful to allow the Dunmer to look pleasant?
