Do you wear costumes because the armor designs are ugly?

And I only use drop costumes. I would never spend a cent on a costume.
This is why I think they should be disallowed in pvp.

Even in PVE, if a random in my group is wearing a costume, I can't determine what type of gear he is wearing, and thus, his effectiveness.

Except for a few cases like monster helmets/shoulders, you can't determine their gear anyway.

I can tell if someone is wearing a robe, that is light armor. If they have a cuirass etc that is heavy armor. Medium you can tell too but I also know the designs. Merely look at the char.

PvP - If they killed you, they were better than you.. No need to see their gear
PvE - if you win the event, goal achieved.. No need to see their gear

Then by your logic we might as well make weapons and attack animations invisible. Hell, remove the character appearance completely and we'll all just play as spectres.

"They exist, so no need to be able to see them or anything they're using or doing" -surely your logic

I 100% agree that it should not be allowed in PvP. But if it is allowed, gotta use it.

    Actually, this is true.

Since they are allowed (which they really shouldn't be), one might as well play with one because it gives you an advantage.

Maybe I'll start using it in pvp.

I wear a costume because my armor makes my butt look fat, but my friends tell me my butt makes my butt look fat LOL

I wear a costume from time to time for events and things, or because it is kind of funny like the bath towel.

I generally don't buy or wear costumes because I'm not ESO Plus and can't dye them. I only wear them on my naked crafting alts for the sake of decency.

The poll is missing one blindingly obvious option - people would wear costumes to cover badly mismatched (from a style perspective) mixed armour sets.

    To answer the broad question...

IMO ESO has some of the best looking armours in any game I've ever played, but they peaked early. The basic racial styles, the 3 alliance PvP styles and glass, daedric and ancient elf. These armours all look like Elder Scrolls styles. The wrothgar ones are less classic ES but also look great.

Most styles after that I wouldn't wear myself so if not for master writs, I wouldn't make any effort to learn them.

That's a fair argument that you are entitled to.

Ultimately it depends on your play style.

I just see it that if your opponent knows more about your gear than you do their's, there is an imbalance.

But, I know this doesn't hold true with everyone's strategies.

Almost all the armor sucks, so if I don't have xivkyn or ancient elf style on the main body like chest, legs, hands, feet and belt (sometimes belt). I'll try to get the crappy styles on jewelry, weapons or belt.

Which is why I try to use one crafted set which are always main body and drop set so I don't need to wear those horrible looking costumes

Some of the costumes would be pretty good if dyeing them wasn't locked behind a wall.

I have a naming and color scheme for all my characters so dyeing armor is a must.

Between all the different style motifs, plus dyes, plus the fact someone might be wearing any combination of 5/1/1 armor types (or not. And that "1" might be the chest, or the hidden helm).... just what all information are you gaining with a quick glance at their character as it attacks? And then there's the fact that the <whatever> Style, Rubedite chest they're wearing could be one of a dozen different sets.

Now, the weapon they're wielding seems like a big & useful clue. But that isn't concealed by a costume.

Needed another option for the poll: 4) I use costumes to hide mismatched armor, but sometimes just because I like the costumes. I choose 4.

All my characters use costumes, not necessarily because I think the alternatives are ugly (though some of them certainly are!) but because I think some of the costumes look very nice. I tend to swap costumes depending on what I'm doing - most of my character have a town costume, a fighting costume and a lazing-around-on-the-beach costume.

Yes, I wear costumes because I can't stand the look and appearance of some of the armour designs. But I also wear costumes because they fit how I want to play my characters, much like I wear looted clothing the majority of the time when i'm not on a quest.

Generally speaking I prefer the look of lower level gear.

I use costumes, and being able to dye my costumes is one of the reasons that I went ESO+ (that and the crafting bag), since we're still not able to redesign the style of armor we find.

A good way to introduce a sink of style items is to allow crafters to spend these to redesign the styles of gear, that way we can make found dungeon gear look the way we want.

Yeah, what's the point in learning awesome motifs when all the gear that's worthwhile using is dropped gear which can't be transformed to a new style.

Fixing this should actually be high on the priority list of ZOS.

It's not that the specific styles are ugly, bar a few like spinners, but more that the inevitable mix of styles is very ugly.

We have bingo. That's my biggest reason.

My second-biggest reason is that we can't hide shoulder pads in this game, and they're almost all ugly or at least out of proportion to the rest of the gear, even the non-monster ones.
